SWINDON TOWN: 'We were wasteful'
6:00am Monday 10th December 2012 in STFC News By Sam Morshead
Town boss Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio suggested his Swindon Town players need to find their way into an opponent’s penalty area 80 times if they are going to score more than once in a game, after seeing the Robins emerge with a 1-1 draw despite dominating Doncaster at the County Ground.
Matt Ritchie’s eighth-minute strike only proved enough for a share of the spoils, as Danny Hollands and Chris Martin hit the woodwork and Gary Roberts and Andy Williams both spurned glorious chances against second-placed Donny.
Di Canio estimated after the match that Town had got into the Rovers box on 60 occasions during the game and cut a frustrated figure when talking about his forwards’ profligacy in front of goal.
“I told my players to be more clinical in wide areas because we were probably 60 times in the opponents’ box and that is not enough to score two goals,” he said.
“We have to arrive 80 times, probably. If we deliver 80 better balls into the box we are going to score two because, unfortunately, every two balls in our box we can concede a goal.
“I said that in some areas it’s clear that, for many reasons, I don’t want to attack or underestimate players but everyone can improve. When the problem is in (their heads), when the people go blurry. I’m not a psychiatrist, otherwise I would change jobs, I am a football manager that tries to help.
“Unfortunately an injury for example, and I’m talking about Andy Williams, probably put him in a bad situation and saw him drop back to the past in a negative way.
“Apart from the 30-minute magic moment against Aston Villa because of the adrenaline and the atmosphere, in a normal day I am very disappointed with him. Not in terms of commitment, but now I cannot wait any more with this situation.
“We work much more than the other sides in the league. We work Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, evening Friday morning now we practice how to keep the ball.
“There is a limit to extend their attention for some details. Sometimes it is too much so you have to reduce the pressure to help. I’ve tried everything, now it’s been three months. It’s enough time to understand that if the problem is in (their heads) I can only work on my pillars which are tactical and discipline.
“That will help us to have a decent season and save the season well, establish this club in League One in a very good manner.”

Said Saturday with his pace he might be better used as a wide winger because he doesn't seem to doing the business in the middle.

Paolo must be referring to the 1on1 with the goalie, if he had been braver the ball was his for the taking or Woods would have had to brought him down for a penalty., but he bottled it big time and chickened out..

My only bad vibe is players pdc have signed do not appear to be working especially in front of goal. Also just wish at times Pdc would not yapp so much to the media and slagg his palyers off.By all means he is the BOSS and if unhappy should all be done in house.
Lets hope the xmas period brings a little bit more luck??????
As to pdc leaving again if these rumours etc are correct who know's????
Do not feel it is time to bring in new Manager and to be honest he aint done so bad,yet at times I guess we all get concerned.
Best wishes and Merry xmas to all Town Fans from us out here
Wiz how are you doing health wise??????

Its staggering to think that Benno is on loan elsewhere and has not been given the chance with a run in the team. I don't think you get allot from benno in general in terms of leading the line but when that ball is in and around the box, nobody cannot deny there has been anyone better under PDC regime... Its just so frustrating how both Connell and Benno finish last season as top scorers with 13, yet neither is given the chance this season, albeit benno is still with us...
No one knows if they had been given a chance that they would be any better but PDC must accept that at this moment in time, he has not justified his decisions on the strikers that he has let go and the replacements signed.
Nice to see that now he is blaming their mentality, so if its not their "desire" "professionalism" "not nasty enough" its now something new... whats next??? they don't wear the correct boots
Im getting proper annoyed with our form at the moment and lack of ability to win games at home not because we have a divine right to be winning like last season but that our general play more often that not clearly shows we are good enough that we should be winning most weeks.
I see PDC says he wanted to bring in a nasty striker but couldn't because of the embargo, which says to me he still feels we lack this. Therefore, Martin has replaced benno for the sake of it... and im not too sure im that convinced that PDC will identify a good enough striker that will score or if he does, lets hope he doesn't go on to be top goalscorer because then they will no longer be required. Maybe that's why Willo and Collo don't want to score coz they seen what has happened to top goal scorers before at the club

He was excellent last season but his return this season is not good.
IMO the problem is the poor final balls into the box. We had many chances to cross in on Saturday and yet we did not create a clear cut chance for a Striker, the Roberts chance excepted. Crosses were too deep far too often and I don't remember one that was played in low, Benson thrived on this type of ball last season.
It's very easy to blame strikers for not scoring but sometimes the problem is in the supply. I liked the pairing of Martin and Williams on Saturday they looked to have the makings of a good understanding.
Frustrating, yes, but to suggest Benson's return will solve everything is not the answer IMO.

The player in question is French/DR Congo right full-back Jerome Kinsonga who is a free agent. Maybe one for Paolo to look at?
Also, ex Everton and Ireland Goalkeeper John Mulligan is also interested in Swindon Town.

What we need is the sort of slide rule killer pass in behind defenders which we know Ferry and Bostock can produce. Like you, I think there is far too much focus on the strikers. Collins gets loads of stick, but look at his two strikes against Yeovil when he received the ball to feet - one an excellent six yard box finish and the other a lovely curling effort from the edge of the box.

If our current strikers are not scoring, I see no reason to believe that bringing another one in will be the magic wand that changes everything. I believe the truth is that we have a good players in all departments, including the strikers. Just listen to what opposition managers have to say about our players. They know what they are talking about. But sadly the whole is not as much as the sum of the parts. Yes, we are in a decent position but we should be doing better - the players are underachieving. I don't know what others think but I don't want to see the board giving PDC yet more money to bring in another expensive player. Where will it end? Our squad is the envy of most clubs in the division. Over to Paolo - after all, he is the top manager in the world. (I'm not sure where that puts Ronnie Moore).

Agree with you about Collins and Williams but I don't see how you can say we would have won the game if it hadn't been for the own goal. Everything that happens in a game is affected by what goes before it. Yes, it might have stayed at 1-0 if if hadn't been for the own goal or we might have gone on to thrash them, or they might have even come back and beaten us. Anything is possible. The only thing we know for sure is that we got only 1 point from a game we dominated.
Maybe I watched a different game on Saturday, I thought we absolutely dominated the team who were second in the table..... Maybe its me but that wasn't a bad point would have been all three apart from a silly own goal.

a) Poor crossing
b) Poor runs made by the strikers
Probably a combination of both.
Williams scored loads last year in L1 for Yeovil and Martin is also proven at this level. No criticism to Paolo or Spencer for these signings, on paper far far less of a gamble than Benson, and Connell who don't have the proven track record at L1.

For a team second in the table Doncaster were nothing special going forward and i still have to see a team better than us yet.
Were still in a good position and a run of a few wins over xmas will get us back in the top 6 mix again but we have to convert our chances.
As for the idiot giving Roberts abuse as he was warming down after the game - get a life mate !!!! were all disappointed in Roberts so far but doing what you did was out of order, every player can go through a bad patch but shouting abuse at him will make his situation worse. I do think however when we took Rafa off we lost momentum. Rafa is the most underrated player in my book and he offers alot to us as a team and deserved his man of the match award.

I'm inclined to think it's more to do with the service than the forwards, after all Collins, Rooney, Williams & Martins have all had decent scoring records until they can here, yet now they all look unlikely to hit a barn door!
The problem is that we have no real pace in midfield and the better quality defences have time to organise themselves by the time we get the ball in, Ritchie always tries to cut back to get the ball on his right foot, slowing everything down. How many times were his crosses hit over long on Saturday? To my mind I would look for a winger with pace who can take on players and BEAT them.
Also Connell would not have scored at this level and Benno was struggling to see out 90mins, they aren't the answer by a long way, now Miles Storey maybe a little different, and he has PACE, play him PdC!!

No goal machines. The last goal machine we had was Austin. Wanted to go so we sold him and rightly so, otherwise we would have got nothing.

Be patient and it will come. Martin is a good signing. Once he gets his first he will continue scoring.
Connell and Benson sadly not the answer.

Even if the players are struggling surely its down to the bench to come up with a plan B and change things around. Taking off RDV was a big mistake and its not the first time our manager has done that to produce a detrimental effect. While I feel sorry for Roberts up to a point, he could have scored the winner and didn't, he looked terrified, and we need to understand why, or let him go, simple as that. I would prefer for him to start performing and contributing, but he seems either afraid or reluctant to do so.
You ask about goal machines, but when Connell does play he contributes, as does Benson, but in our ever changing side does anyone ever get a run in the side to try and do just that, Williams maybe. With his work rate I would have no hesitation at playing him on the wing, move Ritchie to the other flank and play RDV up front in his preferred position, as I believe he was a striker before he came here. His ethos and dedication to any task is beyond question, but one thing I would not do is move Williams out of the side, his input is immense.
The next problem will be finance in January, he has had his budget and the word is, No More, however not much is ever set in stone these days is it.

Recruits the wrong players. Loses some of the best players. Overtrains them. Wrong tactics. Wrong substitutions. Crass man management. Lines his agent's pockets. Humiliates colleagues in public. Blames everyone else. Anyone else can't wait to see this egomaniac bully leave OUR club?
We have been spoilt by the success the man has brought to the club and now because we are not top...
Overtrains them - we had very few injuries last season and the ones this year have mainly been to the players brought in.
Wrong tactics - expand please as you are obviously a master tactition.
Wrong substitutions - worked last season.
Crass man management - you work for him then ?
Lines Agent's pockets - most clubs do, we tried to get players without using agent's a few years ago. What happened ?
Humiliates colleagues in public - names players that have not played well instead of being woolly and blaming the defence/midfield/att
ack as a whole to be nice to the poor (overpaid) player.
Blames everyone else - the players are on the pitch.
Ten managers in 7 years at Town, we must be due for a change, NOT.
Short memories some people have.

.
My overall view is that PDC has done pretty well so far but I think it's fair to say it's been a mixed bag. On balance there are more positives than negatives. Many of us want him to stay but won't be devastated if he decides to jump or if he pushes the investors and Patey a step too far. Life will go on at STFC after PDC has departed, just as it has gone on since Victorian times.

Oxon, I enjoy and respect your posts but not the old "who do you want in his place?" chestnut again! Surely that question only needs to be raised when there's a vacancy? You either want PDC to stay (most of us) or you want him to go (a fairly small minority). Nobody has to justify the latter view by having a replacement in mind. . I respect what you are saying but when someone comes on here and makes a statement suggesting that we get rid of a man that over the last 18 months has brought success to the club we all support I would like them to justify who would replace him.
Very easy to say time up, go, but we have had a manager on average for about 9 months. Where has it got us ? All I want is a bit of stability in the club and if they want him out they should be able to suggest someone that will continue where he left off.
Last season I saw all our home matches and four away from the County Ground. In total I saw us lose on 3 occasions (Oxford, Leicester and at Wembley). As a fan I could not really ask for more. I have fond memories of the celebrations after the Port Vale game and even more so after Bradford.
As a town fan, days like that don't happen often and to suggest that we should get rid of the man that is mainly responsible when we are in a decent position in a higher league is ridiculous.
We have had good times under PDC and it could still get better.
Changing subject slightly, look at the league table and look at the number of points teams have won at home this season. Very unusual, but apart from MK Dons, most teams have quite poor home records.
