- REPORTING BY SAM MORSHEAD & ANDY WARREN
- FULL-TIME: Oldham Atheltic 0 Swindon Town 2 (De Vita 27, 30)
- Two Raffa De Vita goals give Town the win from a very scrappy game
5:35pm
That's it from us for today, ladies and gents. A solid if unspectacular win during which Swindon never looked troubled.
Paolo Di Canio was a very happy man at full time and why not, his side had just completely outplayed Oldham to move into seventh place in League One.
Tranmere visit the County Ground on Friday night, and we'll be back with you for that one, until then goodnight.
5:32pm
Winger Raffa De Vita gave Townt he lead, and is hoping to claim the second one too after it took a deflection.
RAFFA DE VITA
“It was great ball from Matty (Ritchie) and I was the first to react and score a goal, the second was a deflection, so if I can claim it I will.
“I think I had six goals at this point last year, but I went to sleep last year so I hope that doesn’t happen again.
“In the first ten minutes we were shaky, and I thought I might be taken off, but we settled down and I think we were better than them.
“Sometimes it can help playing on the side he is because he can talk you through the game, but other times he can call you games.
“The concentration today was good today and they didn’t have many shots.”
5:19pm
Buzzin wit 2-0 win!! Well done @RaffaDeVita23 getting a brace!

Town manager Paolo Di Canio is currently speaking to the media after earning three points this afternoon.
PAOLO DI CANIO
“In the last three games we deserved much more and today we get what we expect, and we gave our best.
“I am happy because Danny Hollands and Chris Martin started today and learnt what it means to play under me.
“We took our chances but had four clear ones we didn’t take, we have dominated more clearly than today and only took one point, but it happened perfectly today.
“It is obvious I told my player that I hope you try and save your energy for Tranmere, and just keep the ball and keep something for the next game. I discovered another part of my players and we won very well.
“We took only one point from our games but today was a strange atmosphere because there was no big atmosphere, and we set the tempo.
“Once again we are not going to lose in terms of performance and desire because how can you underestimate Tranmere?
“We dominated and we have to keep going, and not like in the past miss the chance to take off. The fact we play Tranmere makes me happy, but if it was Hartlepool it makes me worry.
“Nobody can relax because we have a chance.
“It was a long trip and a lot of money, and after not being completely close to the play-offs it is difficult, but 300 people is a big number to come with us near to Christmas.
“The fans can travel back very happy with the goals and the performance which is professional, I said thanks so much because they are our strength.
“Since Jeremy left something changed, but if I stay I stay for my players and the fans because I promise something and I don’t give up until I go through my plan.
“Thanks so much because their support is important, thanks for 8,000 at the County Ground, but thanks for the 300.”

90+4 minutes: Matt Smith shoots tamely at Foderingham.
4:50pm
90 minutes: Ritchie and Miller both have efforts blocked, before Roberts fires over. Still not tested Simpson. Seven minutes of added time, which at the moment is painful to watch.

4:38pm
A few long range shots coming then?
4:38pm
76 minutes: Ritchie sends a decent through ball in for Williams, who collides with Oldham keeper Cisak with both players needing treatment. Oldham have used all three subs, so striker Robbie Simpson is going in goal.
4:34pm
SUBSTITUTION: Chris Martin is booked for a late shoulder barge on Jonathan Grounds, and that is his last act as he is replaced by James Collins (73)
4:29pm
SUBSTITUTION: Cristian Montano is replaced by Robbie Simpson for Oldham.
4:29pm
68 minutes: Derbshire shoots from inside his own half for no reason at all, and his effort doesn’t leave the floor and goes 20 yards wide.

4:24pm
Attendance: 3,345 (287 Town fans)
4:22pm
61 minutes: Lee Croft lays the ball back to Brown, and he is shot isn’t even close. Oldham really not creating anything.
4:20pm
59 minutes: Martins fires high and wide, and that looks as though it might be his last involvement this afternoon, as James Collins is told to step-up his warm-up.
4:14pm
The fourth official takes over, and we are back underway again.
4:12pm
Looks like we are having a change of assistant referee after Mr Plane pulla up. I think PDC might have just reminded him how important it is to stretch.
4:12pm
51 minutes: Another effort straight at Foderingham, this time from Jose Baxter.
4:09pm
48 minutes: A big cheer erupts from the home support as they have their first shot of the afternoon, but Derbyshire’s effort trickles into Foderingham’s arms.
4:03pm
Underway again at the start of the second period.
4:02pm
Here come the teams for the second half, looks like both sides are unchanged.

HALF-TIME: Oldham Athletic 0 Swindon Town 2
A very poor first half in truth, but Town eventually got going and are well on top of an Oldham side very short of ideas. Could easily be four or five up by now without ever hitting top gear themselves.
3:47pm
45 minutes: Alan McCormack cuts in off the left flank, and drives one miles wide. One minute added time is up, and that's it for the first half.
3:45pm
40 minutes: The ball is worked back into the box after a Town corner, and Martin latches onto the ball and sees his shot deflected behind by Connor Brown. From the corner which follows, Devera sends a diving header over.

30 minutes GOAL 2-0 TOWN (De Vita 30) Nathan Thompson whips a ball in, and after Martin lets it go, De Vita’s effort finds the net thanks to a deflection. It has not been pretty, but Town are well in control.
3:33pm
29 minutes: Oldham look to respond, and Derbyshire gets free down the right and drills in a great cross which Wes Foderingham superbly claims.
3:30pm
27 minutes GOAL 1-0 TOWN: It really hasn’t been pretty at all, but Ritchie whips in a good cross which De Vita just about wins in the air, and the Italian latches onto his own knockdown to fire past Cisak.
3:27pm
This game really hasn't woken up yet, not pretty at all.
3:24pm
20 minutes: Ritchie has a shot from a free-kick which deflects off Dean Furman, but the following corner comes to nothing.
3:21pm
17 minutes: Nathan Thompson gets free down the right and pulls it back to Ritchie, who guides it straight at Cisak. Not sure if it was a cross or a shot.
3:18pm
14 minutes: Big chance for Town as Raffa De Vita wriggles free and crosses, but Ritchie can only turn it over the bar from three yards out. He was under a lot of pressure, though.
3:14pm
10 minutes: Andy Williams has the first effort on goal of the afternoon, after cutting inside Reece Wabara and shooting straight at Alex Cisak.
3:09pm
Five minutes: Town have their first attack of a very uneventful game as Ritchie picks up on a loose ball, but after he drives into the home half his cross has too much for Chris Martin.
3:04pm
Very very quiet here this afternoon, and the ball has spent very little time on the floor.
3:01pm
We are underway here at Boundary Park
2:54pm
The Swindon Town under 18s beat AFC Bournemouth 3-2 earlier today, with Connor Waldon netting twice and Liam Walsh scoring the other.
Manager Paul Bodin said: "It was an excellent performance from back to front.
"Connor Waldon and Mark Francis were tireless with their running and created good opportunities."

2:50pm
Tommy Miller returns to the Swindon squad this afternoon for the first time since the end of October.
Manager Paolo Di Canio is delighted to have him back.
“It will take a few more days for Alan and for Tommy. Since the first day Tommy came back he’s been saying ‘I’m fit, I’m fit, gaffer’ and maybe he has started skipping to his position," he said.
“That made me laugh and smile because his positive enthusiasm is contageous to the others. It’s obvious that we have to be honest, we have to know it will take a few games and then gradually they will get back.
“Obviously I am more happy now than three weeks ago or four weeks ago.
“It’s clear that we played with Notts County and Doncaster two of the best games that we have played without him in terms of football expression but that doesn’t mean that we haven’t missed him.
TOMMY MILLER
“Before he got the injury there was only one game where he didn’t play, in my opinion, at his level for half an hour. Otherwise he was always one of the best on the field, like the last six games with McEveley.
“Tommy Miller for all season was a positive influence for the others with his quality, intelligence and tempo that he played at.
“It makes a difference, we have to be honest, but the others have done very well. Bostock for three or four games has done very well.
“In general, yes, we have missed him. He’s a player that will give the calmness to the others, he doesn’t go blurry easy in the way he speaks and the way he acts. The others feel more confident next to him."
2:44pm
The referee this afternoon is Carl Boyeson

IN THE HOME DUGOUT – Paul Dickov
Scottish striker Dickov and Town boss Paolo Di Canio went head to head as players, and will renew hostilities on the touchline this afternoon. Both players had a reputation for a fiery temperament, and that has translated into their managerial careers.
Dickov joined the youth ranks of Arsenal in 1989, before being promoted to the first team in 1990. Under George Graham chances were limited for Dickov as he struggled to break into the Arsenal team who were rich in talent with players such as Ian Wright. He helped the club win the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1994, and before hand he had been a member of Arsenal's squad whilst it had been a founder of the Premier League. Whilst at Highbury he spent several loan spells at both Luton Town and Brighton & Hove Albion. He left Arsenal in 1996 having made 26 appearances in all competitions, scoring 7 goals.

Dickov joined Manchester City in a period of turmoil; and in his first season at Maine Road he played under five different managers (three full-time appointments and two caretakers). He was in and out of the team under his various bosses, but the following season he went on top scorer with nine goals, but the club were relegated to the third tier of English football for the first time in their history after finishing in 22nd place.
The Scot played a vital role in getting City back into Division One with 16 goals alongside Shaun Goater, the last of which was an injury time equaliser in the Division Two play-off final against Gillingham, which allowed the Citizens to go on and win on penalties.
Despite missing much of the following season through injury, Dickov scored another vital goal as he struck on the final day of the season as City clinched promotion back to the Premiership with a goal in their 4-1 victory over Blackburn on the final day.
It looked as if he was going to lose his place in the side after the signings of George Weah and Paulo Wanchope following their return to the top flight, but he kept his place and won his first Scotland call-up before going on to win 10 caps.
After another relegation Dickov was transferred to Leicester, and his 20 goals saw the Foxes promoted to the Premier League before being relegated again in their first season. That brought a move to Blackburn, but he never really figured and he returned to Manchester City.
Injuries disrupted his second spell at City, this time at the City of Manchester Stadium, and he was loaned to Crystal Palace and Blackpool, before a return to Leicester. He scored two goals in 20 games as the Foxes won the League One title, but was loaned to Derby where his dogged style made him a hit with the club’s fans.
After a brief spell with Leeds he joined Oldham as player-manager, and proceeded to build a young side which finished in the bottom half in 2010-11.They finished 16th last season, and currently sit 16th.
2:39pm
Here are Paolo Di Canio's thoughts on Oldham manager Paul Dickov, who he played against in years gone by.
He said: “His body language is always tough, he was a hard player to challenge on the field. I watched their last three games and there is a clear organisation, not only off the ball but on the ball when they are on the counter.
“You can see there is a manager’s hand in there, especially in an attacking moment. He chose two small and sharp players because he was similar.
PAUL DICKOV
“They attack the space, they don’t hesitate too much. The two strikers are very good quality strikers, so sharp and quick.
“You can see in an attacking moment there is his hand completely. They are very good to watch when they attack.
“In the back, there are players that in my opinion we can damage. They are third from the bottom in terms of goals conceded to the opponents, so they give chances to the opponents to score but also they create chances.
“There is organisation. He is a good manager."
2:38pm
DANGER MEN
Matt Derbyshire

The former Blackburn and Olympiacos striker is playing his final game for Oldham today before returning to Nottingham Forest at the end of his loan spell. The striker has impressed during his temporary spell at Boundary Park, where he has got back on the goal scoring trail after poor spells with both Forest and Birmingham since returning from Greece. The forward likes to sit deep before getting into the box, and while he is not blessed with blistering pace, his footballing brain allows him to beat his man on a regular basis. He can ghost in between defenders, and is a handful for any League One defence.
Lee Croft

The winger, on loan from Derby, has spent most of his career playing in the Championship, but has dropped back into League One following a spell in Scotland with St Johnstone. His bulky frame means he, like Derbyshire, is not going to burst past his man on a regular basis, but he is good on the ball and can also come inside to link up with his strikers. Also possesses a rocket of a shot, meaning Town can’t afford to give him too much space.
Jose Baxter

The youngster was destined for big things after breaking through the Everton academy, and went on to make seven appearances for his boyhood club as well as enjoying a decent loan spell at Tranmere. But disciplinary issues blighted his time at Goodison, and after rejecting a new contract he spent time on trial at Crystal Palace but was not signed due to issues over his fitness. Their loss was Oldham’s gain, and the forward has performed well in League One. Baxter can play as a main striker or drift out wide, and will look to make gaps for the rest of his teammates to profit from.
2:35pm
2:33pm
Here are the thoughts of Swindon boss Paolo Di Canio going into today's game:
“There is no easy place to go but it is one of the toughest because it is a team that has been established in League One for a few years, Dickov is a good manager, they have good organisation," he said.
PAOLO DI CANIO
“They have lightweights with pedigree up front - young Baxter, Derbyshire we know now has found a place where he can play his football, he’s sharp and intelligent and there is more.
“Montano in a wide area, Croft is a more exerienced player and in the middle of midfield they have two very good players.
“In the back they have experience and quality, but if we think they come from a positive moment we have to be careful even more because we are not in a good and positive moment in terms of points.
“In terms of performances I can be sad after Notts County and Doncaster for some reasons but not football expression because we were the best side far and away from two very good sides.
“I hope the pitch is okay because we want to play football. Any side in any moment is tough this year because we know there are good players."

Hello ladies and gents and welcome to a slightly belated edition of Matchday Live.
Apologies for our tardiness, but traffic on the M6 caused a late arrival at Boundary Park.
However, we're all set for Swindon Town's visit to Oldham, and you can keep up to date with events from Greater Manchester right here throughout the afternoon.
Town are looking for their first win in four - will it come at a damp and dreary Boundary Park?
Enjoy!

I like Paolo and I like some of what he's done, discipline is important, team mentality is important, but being able to admit you are wrong and not blame everyone around you constantly is also a key attribute in life not just football.. Humility is worth more to you now Paolo than digging at the board, baiting Mr Bodin who's a real legend of this town, and basically telling us all we lucky to have you as our coach, we aware your contacts and profile is great for us but we also know that the longer your rants and childish actions come out the more fans lose faith in you... All I can think is a 2.2 keeps popping in my head, think come mid jan if we around the play offs positions I'd be pretty happy, I don't think promotion this season will actually be a good idea as unlike most fans I don't think we even close to being ready with this squad and I don't think we should expect the club to pump more money in to the squad whilst Paolo is in charge as to be honest in the whole he's been very wasteful in signings, we do have a decent top half lg1 side but with his budget i can't say I'm surprised, can we sustain throwing that sort of money about though with out letting so many players (you know the list Magera/Connell/Roone

Unacceptable, only 2-0? In the play off positions and 5 points off top spot? Not good enough. Should be top, at least 15 points clear and battering teams like this by 7 or 8. Di Canio out, and take your free medical care at one of the best clinics in Europe with you.
Well done RDV well played and all plaudits richly deserved - Bring one of Fraser's hearses for Williams!

From above,
90 minutes: Ritchie and Miller both have efforts blocked, before Roberts fires over. Still not tested Simpson. Seven minutes of added time, which at the moment is painful to watch.

Having said that some really good parformances and the ones that stood out to me were Ritchie, DeVita and Thompson. The latter didn't let Montano get a sniff. The latter skulking off half way through the 2nd period a very dejected player.
Ferry buzzed around as ever but still doesn't look threatening going forward. Thought Hollands played really well in the holding role, Ward was solid and Devera was excellent (probably one to add to the stand out performances). Fods was great and dealt confidently with anything their weak attack were able to throw at us.
It was good to see Macca back and he did pretty well in the left back position, overlapping well with DeVita.
Collins, Roberts and Miller came in pretty late on and Miller looked good, the other 2 not able to contribute a great deal.
A good win that keeps us well in touch. We looked comfortable but will be tested much harder most weeks.
Overall MOM for me was Ritchie.

Just listened to the PDC post-match interview again. It's hard to see how he and Bodin can both stay at the club unless somebody builds a bridge between them. When Sir William Patey was appointed I had a concern that, as a non-executive chairman, he would not be around very often to provide a link between PDC and the board. That concern now seems well founded. PDC said there's no longer a point of reference. Maybe there is an element of bitterness because of his friend JW's sacking but that is neither here nor there. The chairman must make himself available - now. Otherwise we will head into deep sh1t.

The removal of Wray was for reasons various but a few of us said at the time it left the manager isolated. I hoped that Patey would build bridges but my information is he is very busy on the redevelopment front and talking to potential investors. Ouir manager is Italian and very out spoken, he and Wray are still very close friends and Wray still comes to home games, I don't know about the aways.I think our manager somehow feels devalued or cheated on by Wrays removal, we will know what and when maybe when he decides to leave, until then all we can do is guess.
Jock/malkym,
I don't think I've been any harsher than your constant tirade against Collins and Williams, in fact from chastising Williams some time ago I'm now convinced his input is first class and would play him as a winger, because he is very good as a wide man, superb in fact. Collins will get better. As goes praise for the manager, well up until today our recent form over the last ten games hasn't been outstanding including a string of 1-0 defeats which we could have done without. Today I'm very pleased as we won and hope more wins come in the New Year as this side settles, but Bostocks loan runs out in January and I am hopeful we can extend it. The January window, as with many teams, will decide our season, especially if we get some money, and that IF maybe the deciding factor on many fronts as I see things right now. What we want and what we may get could be poles apart, I sincerely hope not.

From all the posts about Paolo, which IMO the vast majority support him we need to really get behind the team, whichever eleven start and also show our support to one of the best, if not the best, manager we have had.
With Paolo pulling this club along (by the throat!) he will take us to the next level and when he leaves (not too soon please) we will be a more professional club and able to challenge at whatever level we are competing at.

I totally agree that Paolo can get us up with this squad. If only he would stick to that objective?
His post match interview on the BBC was very accurate and measured. So, please Paolo, just leave it at that and not all the other rubbish about 'hostile environments' and taking a pop a the youth team. Why do this?
I just don't understand the point he is trying to make?
On the basis of today's performance and Paolo's post match interview I would happily jump back into the Paolo camp. But there seems to be a war of attrition going on withn the club. That's what is worrying us all.

If he got that he would have a big stick to shake at the board, the big obstacle being, Bodin is very well thought of at board level.
In the "rant" earlier in the week our manager spoke of his deliberation over leaving, but its not clear as to whether the choice was offered by the board, if it was did they have somebody lined up to step in. A lot of politics right now as January approaches, and he has had his budget, so what next ? Its OK to say we will have "Austin money", but how much and when, if Austin doesn't go until late in the window, then all the better choices will have gone and the donkeys will be left. That puts any manager in a difficult situation, let alone one with an eye on promotion.
The next two weeks could be very interesting, but all the public rants are surely not doing his CV any good at all, despite his better side.

Getting realy feed up with a few on here we won 2-o pdc gets us free m.i and some are still snipping.Dont worry about P BODIN if some of you cared that much about him you might get your arse down to the ground and watch the youth i think you will find that D .Byrne did all the work ,as he was here for 6 years and now doing a good job at shefield wednesday. When pdc goes we can go back to the old ways then some of you will be happy and ,hey have lots to moan about.
The only thing I am convinced of is the need to get the problem resolved quickly. It's a recipe for disaster to have the first team manager and the youth team coach at loggerheads.

I know they are not scoring, and I totally accept that, but, I still think things can pan out given a longer run in the team. The manager that so many adore also sees that obviously, or he wouldn't be playing them now would he. Up till now I agree, their goal scoring has been dour, but most agree that Williams brings a lot more to the game than just being the goalscorer. Collins is still finding his feet, and with the almost constant rotation of faces around him the guy doesn't know what to expect. I suspect our manager will either stick with them in January or both will be shipped out, but January is notorious as being the time when most clubs want to keep their best players, so what would we get or better still who ?
I'm not convinced by Martin and Hollands as I've only seen bits of them in the period they have been here, too early to judge.
Any road, I'm busy now for a bit, looking forwards to Friday, lots to do today, so I'll leave it there for now.

We have a decent squad but have underperformed on too many occasions this season. I can't help thinking that this is because of the problems behind the scenes and the lack of a settled side. If Sir William gets his finger out quickly, I believe we will become more consistent - and Malk's gruesome twosome's goal return will improve.

I don't think either of them has missed that many really good chances.

When pdc goes we can go back to the old ways then some of you will be happy and ,hey have lots to moan about.
The only thing I am convinced of is the need to get the problem resolved quickly. It's a recipe for disaster to have the first team manager and the youth team coach at loggerheads.

No doubt a few Pox fans doing the wind ups but a few Town fans who would rather it seems go back to the days of Hart, Malpas and the Manager who can not control his players yet again Wilson shocking behaviour at Sheff Utd. Just imagine what its like supporting Brizzle shity, the Gas, or worse still the Blue Square destined Pox at this moment in time..

Seasons greetings to you and yours. I wondered if you were going to the game yesterday as it's more in your neck of the woods than mine. I'm quite surprised that Raffa hasn't been used as a striker as that is his preferred role and position prior to coming to Town. That leaves the left wing position, for which I would put in Ritchie as he essentially is a left winger, and then utilise Williams as the wide right man, a position where I think he could flourish. Up front that would still leave Collins, Storey or Hollands to fill the other slot. Raffa has the nose for a goal and while he is scoring them why not use his experience ? It seems almost rude not to.

Thank you again to Coral's for 11/8 yesterday, my biggest bet for years has set Christmas up nicely. Good to hear MancRobin doesn't want to screw his betting slip up despite wanting a change in Manager!
I'm off with Grim at the end of the season to collect our winnings. We've still got a manager non of the players want to play for, terrible medical options, poor discipline and work ethic. Here comes Santa with another three points Friday...

Wiz, I agree with you. If Williams and Collins were making minimal contributions - like, say, Pericard or Magera - I wouldn't hesitate to agree with Malk, but they're not. They run their socks off and they help us to keep or win the ball, contributing hugely to our good defensive record. The service to them has not been good generally so far this season. I don't think either of them has missed that many really good chances. . We have a decent squad but have underperformed on too many occasions this season. I can't help thinking that this is because of the problems behind the scenes and the lack of a settled side. If Sir William gets his finger out quickly, I believe we will become more consistent - and Malk's gruesome twosome's goal return will improve. . Malk, I'll be in touch about golf (23rd)later today or tomorrow. Timings should be sorted out today. Let me know if you can't make it or don't fancy it. Apologies to everyone else for hijacking this forum!
Back to the footie -up to a point I agree about W &C's contributions re effort. However they should be contributing to the defensive record by putting the ball in the onion bag more often shouldn't they?. Granted they've had what you might describe as mediocre service to date but like I said how much longer do they get to prove their worth and tey've missed some sitters!? Does Paolo stick with them whatever -not look around in the window? I don't blame him for their misfiring - they both had good track records prior to joining.
RE service to the forwards - I wasn't impressed initally by Miller & Navarro but since they've been out and Miller perhaps more so we've been lacking although Bostock fits in here but he's not a given to stay.
Here's to 3 points on Friday as our pressie from Town and I'll take this opportunity to wish all - and I do mean all posters a fabulous Christmas for them and theirs, a healthy and prosperous 2013 and a second successive promotion for STFC and the enigma that is Paolo Di Canio rants, warts, leg waves, dances, passion, dugout punching and kicking and all.

A strikers job is more than sticking the ball in the net these days. The have to take the hits, receive the ball, lay it off, defend from the front, defend corners, as well as try to stick it the net. Gone are the days when a team lost the ball the strikers would wait for the next attack.
Martin and Williams did this (except the goals) perfectly against Donny and as a result we dominated the game. Heskey was never a prolific scorer but I doubt there are many that would have not liked to hae seen him in a Town shirt as his other qualities made up for the lack of goals.
IMO Raffa is in the perfect postion for his attributes and the reason he has done so well is because he is playing there (he attacks the far post so well).
