Di Canio waiting on January transfer kitty
6:00am Saturday 29th December 2012 in STFC News By Sam Morshead
SELL-TO-BUY?: Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio has suggested that he is still waiting to find out how he will be supported financially in the January transfer window, stating he remains unsure whether or not he will have to “auto-finance” his squad.
After majority shareholder Andrew Black released part of the £500,000 of extra funds originally set aside for the new year sales to help Town out of embargo earlier this season it is expected that Di Canio’s purse-strings will be tightened next month.
That may mean a sell to buy policy being introduced at the County Ground, but the Robins boss hinted he is still a little in the dark as to whether or not he will have new money available to him.
“We are not close and not far, but we are talking to be ready for this moment where maybe we are going to negotiate,” he said of his ongoing transfer negotiations.
“It is not now, it is an option to see.
“It is not easy to say ‘yes we are close’ because generally we see if there is a different intention than in the past to help me, or if I have to go through to make some important decisions if I have to auto-finance my team.”
The Swindon manager stressed that the next three matches, against Colchester, Portsmouth and Carlisle, will give him a clear idea of the areas in which he needs to recruit in January.
“If we finish in the next three games and win two or maybe get seven points or even nine, we are completely inside the group who fights for the top six,” he said.
“The next three games will be crucial for me to make some decisions, because I will know if I can use this or that.”

Who of our perm signings have headed out this season?
.
Bessone is the only one - who was only signed on a short term deal!
.
Loan shouldn't count as the nature of them is to see turnover as they can last as little as a month
.
Out success rate has been quite high this year showing PdC has learnt
.
Hit
Williams
Collins
Navarro
Miller
Ward
Martin
Hollands
Bostock
.
Miss
Rooney
Coke
Bessone
.
Jury out - Roberts - has been a disappointment but not a disaster and still has time to become a hit in the 2nd half of the season
.
Troy too would be here - looked great but went off the boil after his injury - but still young and has time to become a hit
.
So only 3 misses and 1 was par of the Caddis deal and may never had been signed if that situation never arose
.
Coke looked quite useful too - so had he not been injured he may have been a hit too

Having said all that, I think PDC - with generous assistance from Mr Black - has managed to fashion a side capable of promotion. And I remain unconvinced that we need another striker. We have Collins, Williams and Martin with De Vita also able to play as a main striker and Storey coming through. That's a pretty strong striking department I reckon, and one I think many clubs at our level would be jealous of. I would rather see us trimming costs by getting rid of some players than increasing them by signing more. However, if we are going to lose Martin (with Norwich saying "thanks very much for improving his fitness and all-round game"?) and/or Hollands, then I would agree that we need to strengthen. In that case, like Chish and Fips, I would have my fingers firmly crossed.

Williams looks very good and the best of the rest for me, just needs to add a few more goals and I think he will if he can stay fit.
From what I've seen of Hollands he also looks very good and well worth signing on for longer.
The other hits have all done ok, but no better than that IMO, I think they will all admit that if they are honest.
I don't think anyone has been an outright miss a la Comazzi or Lanzano. Rooney has scored more than Martin but admittedly hasn't looked a Championship player.
Hope we can sign at least a forward and a left back, and would like a back up keeper but guess that won't happen.
If we can retain Ward, Bostock Martin and Hollands for rest of season that would be good business, would think Ward and Martin should be possible, Bostock and Hollands may be less likely.

Miller could be a miss as a goal scoring midfielder he has "disappointed" - but he is now 33 so is not Miller of 5 years ago
.
But he has come in played pretty well and not many would moan about him like they did with Risser et al
.
So that's why I put him as a hit
.
Think Navarro is the same - when playing has done a solid job and even though some think he goes under the radar - he does his role well - break up play
.
Roberts is the only one who has not really delivered - yes in a few games like Pompey or Coventry - but not enough and thus out the team
.
Though he is no Comazzi as said so hardly a disaster and still has plenty of time to show what he can do
.
Overall bar Coke, Rooney and Bessone - think all have contribute to our relative success - ie in the POs and had a good league cup run beating higher league teams
.
Don't think we will see many pay off this year - so that will show the reduction in waste as some call it

Plus we had some good cup runs with it
.
Also If you actually listen to what was said it was clearly stated certain players - ala Smith and Connell - were signed purely to get us up and were never going to feature in L1
.
That was known by the board in advance and they agreed to it - so can not be a waste by PdC
.
You can still call it a waste if you like - but that depends on your view point
.
No manager ever gets it right everytime and even the best like Ferguson, Wenger and Guardiola have made some expensive mistakes - with just one of their costing more than all of PdC's put together!
.
Wenger's paid off Japanese flop was entered in their accounts as a £5m hit!

Those are the most likely sources of cash for Pdc to invest.
That said letting some of the loans go back will save a few quid
