SWINDON TOWN: Benson move close - Di Canio

Paul Benson is close to a move to Cheltenham Paul Benson is close to a move to Cheltenham

PAUL Benson’s move to Cheltenham Town is likely to go through in the next 24 hours after the forward agreed to make the switch to Whaddon Road.

As revealed by the Advertiser, Benson changed his mind about the possibility of joining the League Two side over the weekend and looks set to pen a loan deal at Cheltenham until the end of the season.

Swindon Town manager Paolo Di Canio today confirmed that the transfer is close to completion, and he praised Benson for his efforts in a Swindon shirt.

“I think there is a good situation. In the next few hours we will find out if we can go through. He’s positive now and he gave his availability to try to get there and we will see. Now we know that he wants to go and Cheltenham want to have him,” he said.

“Paul is a fantastic lad, a fantastic professional and a very good player. Last year he was one of the main reasons why we went up. The fact that he joined us gave more belief to the others and more options up front and he scored many goals for us.

“In League One I tried to play in a different way, not with a typical target up front even if he works so hard around the field. I would like to play more directly but attack the space. It’s not his best characteristic.

“At his age, even if he is a very fit and very athletic player and very professional, I thought this year was very difficult for him. I tried at the beginning and it didn’t work the way that I wanted, that doesn’t mean he can’t play in League One - he can probably play in the Championship.

"But in the way I want to play it is difficult for him to find the space, so it was fair for me to say to him that he has got the opportunity to move somewhere where he can be the protagonist.”

Good luck Paul Benson and what you have done for us at STFC. Cheltenham are getting a very good player who will score goals no problem to help them get in the top three.

Totally committed player and totally professional cheltenham will reliase when they get him what a good assett he will be.

Ditto - A great model professional and a key element in galvanising the squad last season.

....by the way, is this a loan deal or a permanent move...thought it was a loan but all sounding a bit permanent?

I am very confident that Paul Benson will score plenty of goals for Cheltenham and hopefully help get them promoted in the top three.

PDC's comments are interesting reading in the article above and I think he explains the situation very clearly and very well.

Top pro - we may have gone up without him, maybe not as Champions though. He made a big difference. Good luck to him.

Agreed, on both points - I have noticed a completely different tone from PDC in these interviews in the previous few weeks. More reserved, coherent and professional. He sounds as if he's got the team playing the way he wants to at last and is a lot happier for it.

I don't think any Town fan would have a bad word to say about Paul Benson.

Good Luck Benno and a massive thanks for everything you did for us.

If you ever walked out again on the CG turf (with the exception of wearing a scum top) you would sure to get a great reception.

A very good player who has given his all for the STFC cause. Had a big impact on our promotion last year.

Cheltenham have a real goal scorer now which I hope will help them gain promotion.

Goodbye and good luck Benno

Blimey I am really trying my best to watch the Exeter vs Torquay game on Sky Sports and its worse than watching paint dry and wife just shouted at me are you asleep. Talk about dire crikey it really is pants and just shows the gulf between them and the Town. Rest assured Town fans the gulf is so wide it is insane to just think its only one Division. Ahh well night night back to having a kip I mean watching the game.
