SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio ready to walk away
6:00am Saturday 2nd February 2013 in STFC News By Ned Payne
'BROKEN PROMISES': Paolo Di Canio
PAOLO Di Canio last night dropped a bombshell with the revelation he is considering his future as manager of Swindon Town.
As exclusively revealed on www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk, Di Canio said in a statement that he had been made false promises by the club, that Matt Ritchie was sold behind his back and that the players and fans prevented him walking away a long time ago.
The statement reveals underlying tensions at the County Ground and will create significant concern among fans that the charismatic Italian, who delivered the League Two title and a Wembley final last year, could be on his way out of the County Ground.
It reads: “The events of the last few days have left me with no alternative other than to consider my position.
“With the club selling one of our best players behind my back and continually making promises that are broken, I feel at this moment that my job is not just impossible but is untenable. Of course I shall remain professional and continue to achieve the best I can, but under these circumstances it is not easy.
“If it wasn’t for the players and fans of Swindon Town, I would have walked away from this club a long time ago. I didn’t because I was given repeated assurances that the project to achieve success was always in place and I wanted to deliver this for the players, staff and most of all, the fans of this great Club.
“Despite being linked with a number of more high profile managerial jobs, they have never interested me. Now however I am forced to consider my future as I don’t know how I can continue to work in this environment.
“Too many questions remain unanswered. The future is clouded with uncertainty. At this moment of time my future remains unclear.”

We are the Championes from league 2.
Soon to be Championes of league 1.
Please do not keep saying that Paolo will leave.
He won't walk away and to think he will is disrespectful to what he has done, what he has and what he wants to achieve.
And what he has to say!

1) The football league rubber-stamp the sale of the club - like all I would hope that due diligence did its bit and that there is nothing more than for them to process the paperwork and background checks.
.
2) The new owners arrive next week and once they are permitted to do so they talk to Paolo and clear the air - Paolo then commits his future to town until the end of the seaosn at least.
.
3) Once the sale of the club is approved then we will be allowed to take the 3 players in on loan with Rooney heading the other way for Marlon Pack.

Flight : when the cause is lost and there is no chance, when there is nothing that you can do to change the events.
Fight: When there is HOPE, a DESIRE, SPIRIT; something worth fighting for.
The STFC cause is far from a lost one.
HOPE - 95% of the fans hope you stay with us. The players hope you stay with them.
DESIRE - we, the fans desire to see good, free-flowing football. We desire you take us to a higher level. WE desire you guide us to another League Title.
SPIRIT - Your spirit, your passion, your drive, your motivation, surely it will not let you walk away for a job half done. Even if others have. You, Paolo, are a fighter not a quitter. You want to see the job through, WE, the fans, WANT you to see the job through.
And........
I Really believe you will.
Please, prove me right.
Stay.

On a serious note regarding today - the team just about picks itself (although I'm hoping Devera and J-Mac are both fit again and that we push Macka into his central midfield position as a tester)
...
Who have we got for the bench? I've only got:
Fodders
Thompson-Devera/Flin
t-Ward-JayMac
Roberts-Ferry-Macka-
de Vita
Williams-Collins
.....
Leaving:
Bedwell
Flint (or Devera)
Miller
Navarro
Thompson
Rooney
...and err....who am I missing?..will he take Luke and risk him before the loan deal with Pack...bit risky in my book.

If he has no money left to invest he cant do it, simple. He said he would not leave a car crash behind and the sale of Ritchie was possibly the only way of avoiding it. Reading the club release regarding Paolo/Matt and it is clear we had no money but needed some fast.
With his sale we may have got away with a minor shunt and avoided a head on collision.

SWINDON TOWN: Swindon Town issue statement following Di Canio's comments
11:59pm Friday 1st February 2013 in Headlines
Swindon Town issue statement following Di Canio's comments Swindon Town issue statement following Di Canio's comments
THE Swindon Town board have this evening responded to the statement issued by Paolo Di Canio earlier this evening.
The Robins' statement, posted on the club's official website, read: "Following Paolo Di Canio's comments earlier today, the Board wishes to assure fans that it continues to work towards the sale of the Club and the ensuring of its long term future.
"The last few days have been extremely demanding given the combination of significant on-going losses, a closing transfer window and the disappointment of not bringing in the loan players as we had wished.
"The Board expects to complete the sale of the Club next week and are confident that the new owners share the same ambitions as Paolo and his team. The decisions made over the course of the last few days have not been made lightly, and in the case of the decision to sell Matt Ritchie, have been done in conjunction with the new owners.
"Whilst the Board understands Paolo's desire to gain promotion and is wholly supportive of this, the Board's considerations and responsibilities extend beyond the on field activities of the team. On some occasions it is faced with difficult choices and whilst we recognise the disappointment to all caused by the sale of Matt, the Board has not shirked its duty to face up to the harsh realities of its financial situation.
"We look forward to the swift resolution of these short term issues, Football League approval of the new owners and hopefully a win against Crawley.
I think Jed has seen the earlier comments that our top man may walk and made a few phone calls putting pressure on Black to get things resolved.

Black should not be blamed as he kept this club alive. Such short memories a lot of the posters have on hear!.
I believe Paolo is geniuine in his loyalty for the club and fans, and I believe the actions of the club were justified, but they could have communicated a lot better. Patey's involvement in this has been nothing short of disgraceful.
STFC fans need to wake up and realise we are really only a very good League 1 club. They have very short memories it seems, the problem goes way back when Swindon Council blocked the development of a new stadium on the M4 front garden. What do we have their now, housing estates!.
This club could quite possibly have been a Reading or a Swansea who have this stadia and business related periphery.
Even if Paolo leaves and several players too, we should not be moaning at the past club owners, it all stems back to Swindon council's decision.
The new Jedi warrior is a property developer, and it could be he sees the potential having secured the buying of the club to pursue the building of a new stadium complex and knock down the CG for houses. Look at what Bristol Rovers are doing, they will be above us in two years.
I still believe in our success for the future, but we need to be patient and stop being premature glory hunters.
Must go now, off to Crawley for early doors.

After all the goodwork he did and don't forget he has had to write of millions of his investment it's a pity his lasting memory for STFC fans is how he has reacted in this last month debacal..
The appointment of his henchman Patey has been a disaster for the club.and difficult to see how he has been of any benefit to Black. In last nights paolo statement written by Spencer, it was stated it was an administrator that told Paolo the whole team was up for sale and the reason it was only Ritchie that was sold is because there were no other offers on the table.. Surely as Patey was chairman he should have been advising paolo of the situation not some financial "expert" brought in by Patey to sell off our assets for half their worth..
When he was appointed I kept an open mind, but I doubt there will be any fan who will remember him as a decent chairman or person for that matter. Poor decision making, poor communication. How did this man ever become a Sir or a diplomatic ambassador.

It all sounds like a totally mis managed diplomatic row, and the words of the statement have obviously come from the P person.

The sale of Ritchie. Whatever happened why it happened and how it happened, someone should have had the balls to have told Paolo what was going on.
If Black didn't have the bottle then McCrory should have done. It's he who will be working with Paolo in the future, if he has one here. What were they thinking?

If he has no money left to invest he cant do it, simple. He said he would not leave a car crash behind and the sale of Ritchie was possibly the only way of avoiding it. Reading the club release regarding Paolo/Matt and it is clear we had no money but needed some fast.
With his sale we may have got away with a minor shunt and avoided a head on collision.

We are only where we are today because AB has bankrollered our club, it was always unsustainable, and sooner or later the bubble was going to burst. Maybe had JW put his foot down on all PdC transfer activities and agent fees we wouldn't be where we are today, but he didn't, and now we are losing huge sums of money
every week,
We will now have to wait to see what the new board have to offer, but they have saved the club from administration, so lets give them a chance.
As for PdC, like most, I love the man, been a breath of fresh air having him as manager, but he is part of the problem and I would be hugely disappointed in him if he left us now when we really need him. The owners run the club and pay his wages and have to do right by STFC not PdC. Ritchie was sold to save the club from further turmoil, if PdC cant understand that then unfortunately I feel it will be the end of him.
Come on PdC show us what a fighter you are, we're all behind you, take us to the championship!

You know all too well, nothing in life is easy and we all have to fight for what we have and what we want or need.
You are a fighter, a leader with heart & passion - people follow you for those qualities.
As you have said before, we don't have to like you but follow you for success.
The fans have followed you & the team to give you support to achieve that success.
Please stay the course; have the faith (as we have in you) and finish the work that you have started for STFC.
The fans of this Club deserve more after all we have been through over the years.
Make yourself a LEGEND at our Club - stay, fight, succeed and win like a WARRIOR, for yourself, the players & the fans!
Don't walk or run - stay the course and FIGHT for the LEAGUE 1 TITLE.

Its market capitalisation was initially about £1.4 billion (the shares were listed at £13 I recall? I took a look at it but steered well clear, just like with Facebook) but the share price has halved since then.
I think Andrew Black took some money out immediately, although it's not easy to take 10% of a company out quickly without trashing the share price, and not good politically if you are the founder of the business. So he could still hold a few shares, but I've no idea.
His wealth from Betfair could therefore be between £140m or £70m depending on when he was able to sell his shares.

They have announced contracts have been exchanged, which indicates a deal is likely to go ahead, but isn't a concrete "done deal".
They have also said that they will be working to get resolution to that and the loan players as early as possible next week.
As for PDC, there is a disconnect between him and the board, how much of it is political posturing your guess is as good as mine, but he will do everything to protect himself in all of this, so I understand the press release.
I just hope that common sense can prevail across both fans and board(s) alike and that come close of play next week we are back to being a stable club.
The sale of Matt is my view was necessary to keep enough funds in the bank to pay the wages and running costs and to avoid administration. We are led to believe it was a cash up front deal, which is why we didn't get full value. Supply/demand determined.
One player, whilst an excellent player and a mainstay of the team does not make the whole team, and we have enough firepower all over the park to continue to get results in these tough times.
I hope the players fight for the club and the badge of honour that is STFC and give Crawley a stuffing. I would like to believe that with few games to go, we are an attractive proposition to a whole host of money men should the existing deal fall through.

"having just come from a public meeting with current banbury united and proposed swindon owner jed mccory i can confirm that near enough every single "fact" printed and publicised this week about the swindon situation has been wrong. firstly the debt is not as has been printed and is closer to 18m the offer to buy the club is still just that, an offer. it had to be submitted on the mentioned date otherwise the club would have gone into administration. absolutely nothing can be finalised until a meeting takes place with the football league on monday. jed mccory is not and will not be a director or board member at swindon. he simply put together the plan for a consortium to try and save swindon from going out of business. jed mccory has also not given a single statement to the media until tonight, yet this did not stop sky and others disgracefully harassing his mother at her place of work and his father at home. there has been no quote from jed or anyone else involved so any quotes you do read are false and any images have been used without permission finally, paulo dicanio's statements about considering his position are false, the debt has mainly been cause by overspend on players and a manager who is on a ridiculous wage for the level of football he is at, the situation is basically, work for free or find another job. sorry to any swindon fans who have been told other stories but all of the above has come from the horses mouth so to speak and swindon fans deserve to know the facts about the situation"
We seem to have a fair few of those.

Andrew Black clearly has money issues of his own, so much so that he quite possibly couldn't fund the club into February, rather than it be based on a decision where he wouldn't do it.
The most annoying part of the Matt Ritchie sale was that we clearly needed the best part of £500,000 to fund this months outgoings and not default on any wage payments, rent payments and any ongoing CVA payments, however, this has been known for at least a month and I would have proposed an early season ticket renewal deadline of the end of January to renew at last years prices.
I not so sure they even needed £500,000 if some of that money was earmarked for reinvestment in the 3 signings later in the day.
You'd have only needed to sell just over 1,400 adult tickets to raise £500,000, or 700 tickets for the supposed £250,000 a month wage bill.
I know this would have left a big hole in the 2013/2014 budget, but you could have filled this with either the money from new owners or player sales in the summer where there wasn't the panic to sell at rock bottom prices.
Just makes me annoyed, especially when Matt Ritchie was pretty much told he had to go to save the club.

At the end of the day the landlords will always have control of future development and I doubt if I will ever see any change with their attitude in my lifetime.
If these guys run companies it makes you wonder how they ever make money. This is a clumsy ill thought out piece of business that puts the future of the Club at risk.
Whatever Andrew Black has done in the past for us he has now caused severe damage that could have been easy avoided.
To be honest I would think Black feels pretty let down with his so called business partners who were there to take care of the running of the club. None of us know exactly what's gone wrong behind the scenes and probably we never will, but do agree with you this severe damage could have been avoided with a bit more savy and nous

Three steps to heaven:
1) The football league rubber-stamp the sale of the club - like all I would hope that due diligence did its bit and that there is nothing more than for them to process the paperwork and background checks.

Whether he can or cannot afford to continue a bit longer, he wants out now, and the sudden rushed timing and firesale is not helping at all.
Patey is to communication what Sir Douglas Bader was to tap dancing.
The club has been very badly run financially. Black, Wray and Paolo all have to shoulder the blame for that. We have squandered a fortune on average players, agents' fees, paying up contracts, falling out with and disposing of players.
Continual operating losses are unsustainable in football. Fitton was right. It's got to end. Players are paid far too much. Reform and financial fair play has to start with the top clubs and work its way down and create a level playing field to stop people foolishly chasing the dream and creating these fiascos over and over again.

I had been informed by a friend who's information is usually pretty reliable that PdC had told the board (Who ever that is at the moment!!) that he was resigning and a joint statement was to be released after the Crawley match. I had no reason not to believe it but as I said it was unsubstantiated. I'm glad I didn't mention at the time now!! Just shows how many rumours are circulating at the moment . I just hope for a club statement next week that can settle's us all down.

and expect Perry Deakin could follow him to Swindon too. If he does he brings a host good contacts within the british and international world of sport and business. Maybe this could be a good thing after all?

Those that were close to the edge after transfergate will be one step closer to slipping over it.
Me, im not really sure what I what I think. Only the longer we stay in this transfer of ownership limbo, the worse things are likely to get.
Paolo, youve always been a bit of a flight risk. But you are our own, special and very successful flight risk.
For the memories, thank you. To the future, good luck
