SWINDON TOWN: Williams insists Town have more in the tank

Town's Andy Williams Town's Andy Williams

SWINDON Town may still be unbeaten in 2013 but striker Andy Williams says the Robins have yet to find their very best form.

Town have four wins and three draws from their seven League One fixtures since the turn of the year, scoring 14 times and conceding just twice in the process.

Yet despite that phenomenal record, Williams remains unconvinced that he and his teammates are achieving the performance levels that he hopes will help propel them into the Championship.

“I think we’ll all agree there’s more to come from us and that’s the exciting thing. We’re unbeaten this year and yet there’s probably more to come from everyone,” he said.

“I think there’s an undercurrent, if we can get it out from us, to be a bit more positive amongst each other. If we can start believing then we can do something special like the lads did who were here last season.”

With a consortium fronted by Jed McCrory set to assume control at the County Ground next week, manager Paolo Di Canio could soon be allowed to flex his muscles in the emergency loan market.

While Williams is happy that he and the rest of the Swindon squad have coped admirably with limited resources of late, the forward said an influx of new faces would spur the rest of the team on for the remainder of the campaign.

“There’s not as much pressure as there was before coming from the sidelines and off the bench but we’ve still got a good squad and more than enough capability to bring people off the bench and win the game, like we did at Colchester,” he said.

“You don’t tend to bring people in to sit on the bench so the people coming in will be straight into the team.

“It does put a little more pressure on us.

“You know that waiting in the wings there could be more players on the way so you know you have to be on your game so that if anyone else comes in you’re not the one making way for them.”

Williams’ former side Yeovil have won seven out of seven to haul themselves into the play-off picture recently, and the 26-year-old can see the promotion race starting to hot up.

“They (Yeovil) are one of the in-form sides in the league at the moment. I think Bournemouth have got to be the other.

“There’s a few teams who have come with a good late run in there and there’s a couple near the top that are starting to slip away as well.

“It’s all about momentum at this stage of the season and Yeovil have certainly got some of that at the moment.

“Hopefully we’ll have some of that by the time we come to play them in a few weeks time.”

See Coventry are having their problems now too, that could effect them in the promotion race. I thought they were a good outside bet for a late run into the autos.

Jeez some people!! Don't you see all the running off the ball willo does pulling defenders with him creating space for other players to run into? If he scored every chance he got he would be playing for a premiership club. We are holding our own at the moment certainly in the mix for playoffs and who knows even automatic promotion. Loan players may help the cause but will take time to adjust to how we play. I guess snirt didn't get any valentines cards yesterday!!

Hear hear. Some people are so hard on our players, expecting them to do what we see million-pound players do on the telly. There was more encouragement for Andy Monkhouse on Saturday than our own boys, no wonder they blew it!

We have one of the best goals scored record over the whole football league at the moment its not all about williams putting the ball in the net its his allround play his twists and turns that creat the space the assits. I do think that collins and williams have not had time to develope a partnership up front. They are still young players and with Pdc help they could become good strikers.

Were you at the Hartlepool game? The was nothing wrong with the crosses Roberts and De Vita were putting in, Williams and Rooney/Collins were getting on the end of them too but their keeper managed to stop everything. We should have scored four or five that day.

PDC is right - we dont have a natural goalscorer. What we do have is a forward line that MAY score a goal now and then but not one of them has that killer instinct that the likes of Austin or Cox have.
For sure they can TALK a good game, say all the right words etc but when it comes to putting the ball in the net regularly they struggle, and that is what just might stop us getting promoted..

Sorry have I come onto an Oxford utd supporters website? I can't believe all these negative posts regarding our players Williams is fantastic at running at defences and. Will score more goals .he like all players can't play a blinder every week they all have off days. Remember we league 1 Swindon town not Man it'd or Real Madrid get behind the team they need support not abuse and barracking . And remember if you can't say anything nice its best not to say anything at all .

Harsh criticism on Williams who remains a player that can create something out of nothing.
Seen enough to impress me but as mentioned still young and will improve.
This is Div 1 and not the Premiership.

Can't believe that Supporters would label our players shiit, still we are all entitled to an opinion and all very different.

Natural goalscorers like Austin and Cox are sought after commodities and I do accept that we are missing one. However we remain a top scoring side in the division despite the current uncertainty so not all gloom and doom.

I always start by looking at the commitment of players. Williams is top notch there. Forwards need to be able to create opportunities and score. He is good here but needs to do better with the one on ones which he frequently creates. In Paolo's army they also have to do the donkey work of defending from the front. He is very good at that. The team does not have a real striking partnership yet but I think it will develop. To illustrate I would point to the Ferry/Hollands partnerhip which clicked and gave us real strength. (sadly lost now) Good individuals are only part of the answer but we have genuine scope to get stronger. None of the opposition scare me and I still believe we can go up this season.

Obviously the critical remarks made by the few were not referring to his efforts at Colchester where he worked his socks off to the point of exhaustion.Granted he did balloon a couple of chances in the game but he put a real shift in,as they all did resulting in the result we needed. For me Roberts was the catalyst on that day but he like Williams does blow hot and cold.Even Sir Don had a bad day so give the boys a break.

bhred says...
12:25pm Fri 15 Feb 13

But there you go Buck...balloon a few chances is a criticism you could pretty much level at Williams every game. As PDC acknowledges, we don't have a natural goalscorer. One hopes with coaching both Williams and Collins conversion rates will dramatically improve

As an aside if I was PDC right now I'd bring in Jay at fullback and play Macca in midfield who gets around the pitch better and is far more combatative than Navarro or Miller

Sure do acknowledge his running off the ball it's his running with it that's the problem very one footed and would score loads more goals if he could shoot with his right peg. The chance that went begging against Pools after he'd done the hard work was criminal.
Both he and Collins should go on a goals awareness course - the object of the game is to plant the ball beyond the reach of the man standing between two upright white posts with a similar white bar horizontally fixed across the top of the posts. Seriously theyre not that bad but boy oh boy between them they miss a shed load of chances.
Be interesting to see who if anybody will pick up the Ritchie crumbs. He took the pressure off WC his strikes making their misses less glaring but now their cover is blown they simply have to hit the back of the onion bag!

Both Collins and Willo are very good players at this level, I was made up when we signed Willo after seeing him tear town apart several times playing for Yeovil, yes he misses sme, but if he didn't then we wouldn't have him because we would have sold him already.

The way we slate our players at this club all the time is dispicable.

Have to agree, there are some (we all know who they are so won't name names) who seem to take a perverse pleasure in running down our own players. Constructive criticism and honest assessment of a players performance is all well and good but slagging them off is another. We could have a team full of world beaters managed by Pep Guardiola and a pulitzer prize winner writing the sports pages of the local paper and some still wouldn't be happy!

Some on here seem to be in my opinion a lit overly sensitive about our players being 'slagged' off. Two things
- I thought this was a forum for discussion and debate that might include what we individually and collectively think about different players
- Though Williams (for example) frustrates the hell out of me, I choose to vent my feelings here rather than slag him off at the match when he's just missed his next sitter

Williams has NOT played well this season and when he does its only in spits and spurts....

So he can run fast and find space..
He is a professional footballer..

But its no good if you can only use the time to fluff yet another gift at goal....
