SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio quits over 'broken promises'
6:00am Tuesday 19th February 2013 in STFC News By Sam Morshead
Paolo Di Canio, who has left Swindon Town
PAOLO Di Canio has resigned from his position as manager of Swindon Town.
In a statement released to the Advertiser yesterday evening, the Italian ended more than a fortnight of speculation regarding his future at the club by confirming his departure from SN1.
Di Canio originally notified the current board - that of Andrew Black - of his decision to leave the County Ground last Tuesday.
He did not take training on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday last week and only returned to continue the preparations for tomorrow’s trip to Tranmere after the prospective new owners of the club held emergency meetings with Di Canio, his agent Phil Spencer and his lawyers.
A short-term agreement was drawn up which would see him go back to work until 5pm yesterday, at which point his contract would be renegotiated with the incoming investors - providing the takeover had been ratified by the Football League.
Although that deal is expected to be completed by lunchtime today, the League had not rubber-stamped the takeover when the deadline ticked by last night, meaning the prospective new owners did not have the power to discuss the terms of Di Canio’s deal.
The Italian has been frustrated by recent events in SN1. He was left fuming at the length of time it took for Black to inject the necessary equity to lift the club out of embargo in the autumn and was further upset by the sale of Matt Ritchie to Bournemouth last month. Di Canio claimed the winger was sold behind his back.
On February 1, the ex-Town boss issued a statement to the Adver in which he revealed he was “considering his position” as manager of the Robins. Since then he has refused to be drawn on his future until yesterday’s revelations.
Part of the statement read: "It is with great regret that I find myself having to make this further press statement.
"Last Tuesday, February 12, I formally confirmed my resignation as manager of Swindon Town Football Club with immediate effect.
"In my previous press statement on February 1, I said that I was considering my future, as my position with the club had become untenable, after I found out that Matt Ritchie had been sold without my consent.
"As I had previously stated, there have been a number of broken promises made by the club over the time that I have been manager of Swindon Town. Despite these problems, I have delivered everything and more that was asked of me, by achieving promotion last year as champions and competing this season for promotion to the Championship and being just three points from top place a year earlier than expected.
"I did not resign immediately, nor publicise my resignation after I had formally confirmed it, as I did not want to jeopardise the negotiations for the sale of the club and I wanted to listen to what the proposed new owners plans were.”
Di Canio took charge of Swindon in May 2011, his first managerial appointment after a glittering playing career which included stints with Celtic, Lazio and West Ham.
He led the Robins to the League Two title in his first season, as well as a Wembley final in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy.
This term he has taken Town to sixth in League One and the fourth round of the Capital One Cup.
However, it has not been a full-time honeymoon for Di Canio. He was the subject of accusations of racist abuse by former loanee Jonathan Tehoue, held a very public spat with Leon Clarke and fell foul of the authorities on several occasions.
Swindon will now start the search for a new boss as they look to maintain their promotion push.
It is believed that the incoming board will look for an experienced head to guide the club for the remainder of the campaign.

If we can find some shorts big enough why not stick him on tonight as centre forward?
What a complete and utter mess.

I THOUGHT IT WAS THE NEW BOARDS FAULT..... sorry SOME people wrong AGAIN
By going over that deadline he's walked so no contract fees to pay up and the new board gets what they wanted. An absolute joke of a manager (newell).
To me this looked like a trap he fell in.
The only way is down.
Start in the Moonies before we travel to prenton park
Downwards and downwards.

I have to say that Paolo has perhaps not conducted himself as well as he could in all this either. He may have been let down by various broken promises but to walk away at this crucial point is neither professional nor fair to the people that have supported him, the fans.
Don't get me wrong, if he changed his mind tomorrow and came back I would welcome him with open arms, because he is probably our best chance of securing promotion this season. Just a shame Simon Grayson joined Preston yesterday, he would have been a good option in my view.
It's shame this leaves such a bitter taste in the mouth Paolo, you have been adored, but I can't help feeling that you have let us down this time.

Onwards an upwards.

He is an emotional character who reacts on the moment.
When the takeover comes to a conclusion today,I would not be at all supprised to Hear Mc Crory say that they are now re negotiating with PDC.
I can imagine that this may already be happening because Mc crory is unable to speak publicly until takeover completion, and everything PDC has said was last weeks news, only the 5pm deadline last night makes everyone say that PDC has left. No live TV interview with PDC yesterday or today, just snippets from past statements from him.An interesting day in store today I think, when hopefully all concerned can speak.
Maybe, just maybe there is still a chance PDC will stay. ...!

Paolo has given 100% to STFC during his tenure and has even chucked in some of his own money and time which should`ve been devoted to his personal life. I think the bloke is worn out and a break from footie for a few months would do him good - before taking up a new position somewhere !
Might I be so bold as to suggest that PDCs statement is nothing more than what was said last week.He said nothing new yesterday and the only thing that happened was that the 5pm "deadline" came before the ownership takeover had taken place.

Pathetic.
People fotget exactly what he's DONE for this club and instead just like to remember the more controversial moments.
This guy sat in the dugout, the day his parents died.
He reportedly offered/gave his own money to help the club.
He picked the club up after relegation to the bottom division of english football, and has taken us to the brink of The Championship.
Has put up with clear vindication from the football league.
suffered keyboard warriors calling for his early sacking at the beginning of his reign.
Taken us to our first cup final in modern times.
I honestly don't understand how anyone can have a bad word to say about him. But then, like i said above....its so easy now he's gone.
I hope to god he does come back, if not to shove your 'mugs' comment back where it belongs!

How quick people (eddy) to slag DiCanio off now he's gone...so easy isn't it!

How many Chairmen do you think would be brave enough to take on Pdc as their Manager having read his history, despite his relative success at STFC
