SWINDON TOWN: McCrory reveals hunt for new boss yet to begin
6:00am Tuesday 26th February 2013 in STFC News By Sam Morshead
LET’S GET TO WORK: Town’s new board members at the County Ground yesterday, l to r, Callum Rice, Gary Hooper, Jed McCrory and Steve Murrall
SWINDON Town chairman Jed McCrory has confirmed that the club has yet to formally begin their search for a new manager.
As reported by the Advertiser yesterday, McCrory confirmed that he has yet to approach anyone with a view to succeeding Paolo Di Canio at the County Ground, despite recent speculation.
The Adver understands Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Phil Brown, Terry Butcher, Peter Taylor, Gus MacPherson and Andy Thorn are interested in the position, while Steve Coppell and Paul Tisdale have been linked with the Robins and Ian Dowie watched the 1-1 draw with Preston last weekend.
But for now McCrory and his new board of directors are happy to stick with the caretaker duo of Tommy Miller and Darren Ward.
“If we do have to make the manager decision swiftly then we will do so, although I haven’t spoken to anybody,” he said. “I haven’t rung anybody’s chairman to ask to speak to their manager.
“We’ve just concentrated on getting this done.
“We’ve been very respectful of the players’ wishes and to Darren and Tommy currently. We haven’t spoken to anybody. The betting’s gone quite bizarre - some very interesting odds.
“We look at it as football fans and as businessmen and when we would like to talk to someone we will contact the relevant people and do it the correct way “But in the meantime we’re supporting the players’ wishes and Darren and Tommy, and why shouldn’t they have a go? They love the club.
“We agreed to sit with Darren and Tommy on Wednesday and have a discussion on where we were, what their thoughts were and what our thoughts were, so I’ll be able to tell you more after Wednesday.
“I think we’ll look at anybody that will take the club forward, why wouldn’t we? We’d be naive not to.”
When McCrory was asked about the possibility of a return for Di Canio, he said: “If we feel there needs to be a manager come in we’ll act swiftly and we’ll act to the benefit of Swindon Town Football Club, and if that means Paolo wants to have a conversation in reference to the manager’s job if that’s what we get into, then of course we’ll have a conversation with him.
“There have been other big characters at this club, let’s be aware of that. To isolate it on one individual is I think a little bit hard on the heritage of this football club, because it’s a tremendous football club.”

I reckon they may go with the dynamic duo till the end of the season then take a proper look. Interesting as I thought a new boss would be top priority but maybe at this important juncture, some continuity is needed - DM/TM know the club and players so maybe in the short term are the best choice, would like to see someone who could call the shots on their behalf from the sidelines too though as we seemed to lack something Saturday.

Maybe Pitman is the answer, whatever, it needs addressing as a priority.

Second priority and should already be underway is player recruitment, we are very lightweight in squad terms at the moment.

BUT, if he does He and Jed are going to have to make some compromises, possibly some recognition and admit that although he felt justified, he perhaps acted hastily at the end.
Jed will also have to recognise, and perhaps already does, the tremendous pressure and emotional turmoil that Paolo would have been under with everything that went on with the sale of Ritchie, the offer of a fire sale of our players, his team, the non-sale/sale of the club, football league approval/ non approval, etc etc, not to mention trying to keep the team in shape, mentally prepared and protected from the day to day upheavals that we're going on.
If it happens it will be a big call for both of them, but could be the start of a great new relationship.
The key may be the meeting with the players and taking their opinions into consideration.
Paolo has been a hard task master. Some may feel on here unfair at times, and maybe they are right, but they will also know how they have all improved as players and that Paolo, right or wrong, really is like a general who cares only for the greater good and greater objective, seeing the TEAM before an individual. It was interesting I felt that Tommy Miller contacted Paolo after Saturdays game.. There is obviously still a great deal of respect, Honour and Loyalty towards Paolo and his staff.
An interesting couple of days ahead.
FOR ME AS YOU MIGHT EXPECT, IT'S UNQUESTIONABLY, GET AROUND THE TABLE BOYS, PUT TO BED ANY DIFFERENCES, AND WELCOME BACK PAOLO....

Without any disrespect to any of the current interim management team, it is without question that Paolo Di Canio achieved a great deal in his time at the club.
Regardless of recent events, comments and actions, by signing this petition you are joining your voice to echo out a simple single message.
We want to see Paolo Di Canio officially offered a return to the role of Manager of Swindon Town FC.
We want to see Paolo Di Canio's backroom staff offered a return to their previous roles within Swindon Town FC.
We want to see and hear comments and evidence, that the newly established board have exhausted all avenues to bring Paolo Di Canio back to the County Ground.
With Paolo Di Canio and his team back in charge, with their work ethic and enthusiasm... We can build Swindon Town into a stable, sustainable Championship club. This is the best chance we've had in an awful long time to reach the Championship - Please don't let it slip away!

If fans on here dont realise it is going to go belly up if we dont get a manager in soon then you all need a reality check.
we are not bloody Banbury Utd playing we are a professional football club and additional players and manager needs to be sorted.
Unfair of me to say but i get this feeling everything is going to be done on the cheap. They knoew roughly when the takeover was going to happen they should have had a contingency plan in place if Paolo wasnt coming back to have a short list of potential managers and work on it.
everything seems too laid back for me at the moment if they are serious about going up to the championship. I hope im wrong but i get the impression they will be happy with another season in L1 and recruit players in the summer.
This is our best chance of getting to the championship and if we blow it it is down to the so called businessmen of this club that have screwedcup for us and that means the previous board and the new one.
Paolo is by his phone Jed waiting for you call !!!!!!!!!!! GET HIM BACK

Of course not - so how the hell can anyone say he is sat there waiting for the call!
.
Jed has said they have tried to make contact with PdC - he (or in fact Phil - as everything goes through him) hasn't answered / responded so PdC can't be that desperate to come back
.
Lets not forget he WALKED he was NOT sacked!
.
That was HIS choice!
.
Not only that he took his entire backroom staff with him and left us competely rudderless at a crucial time in the season - surely they could have stayed until a new manager was found?
.
What we need is to get through tonghts game and then focus on how to ensure the season doesn't fall apart
.
For me that has 2 choices
.
1 - Ward / Miller stay in charge but an experienced "Director of Football" like Coppell or even Gorman come in to assist
.
2 - A new management team is hired for Sat
.
I can not see a return for PdC - too many bridges burnt and don't think the squad will be behind him as much as some think!
.
he walked out on THEM - that will have hurt them!
.
He stripped Macca as captain - yet the players have reinstated him!
.
He banished Rooney - yet the players have brought him back with open arms
.
It doesn't appear that they haven't exactly been pleading with Jed to do everything he can to get PdC back!!!

Far too much negativity too on the new board, they have agreed with the players to give Ward and Miller 2 games, then discuss things tomorrow. What's wrong with that?
Any potential manager has pros and
cons, any existing manager will have some success or failure under their
belt (with exception of PDC who has only success), and any new manager eg JFH, will be a gamble, as PDC was.
Clearly though we need guidance from the dugout, and new loanees - striker, winger, and Marlon Pack in the middle

Paolo set hight standards and players should respect that and not think they are the dogs b******s and think they can do what they want. Not so long ago fans were on here when wilson was here slating players for the drinking culture which led us to L2 so what do you want a successful team or back to the wilson relegation era.
Players get paid well and its their job and they should do as instructed by the manager and dotn think they can do what they want they are supposed to be professional people.
we all get directed at work and its no different to a player.
I would have Paolo back tomorrow and for all of you who say he is history lets face it he was give a budget for players which he used it was given by the board and then the board changed direction so is Paolo to blame for that and is he to blame for the most stupid business done in selling Ritchie to a rival team, that was the most ridiculous piece of business done in my book at a total give away.
Broken promises and again its no different to any of us being given broken promises at work its happenned to me and i walked.
People in business have to be honest and footabll is a business so until Paolo gets another club to me we should be dragging him back in to finish the job.
Jed and his team may be nice guys and sociable but that doesnt win football matches having direction and a tactical genius which Paolo is as he has proved and no one can deny that.
Fickle fans and two faced fans who were saying how great Paolo was soon change their spots when they feel like it.
There are two sides to evert story and i for one will believe Paolo more than i would the likes of the undiplomatic Patey.

The Ward Miller decision was a good one for a very short plug gap given the time to prep for last week and Saturday but IMHO it should be only that a very short stop gap , we have these players here to help us win this league not run the club as they go about their daily business . One thing you could never find fault with Paolo was his work ethics he would be on that phone night and day trying to find loan signings and if needed a new manager too , for the new board the FA meetings are over so now is the time to roll the sleeves up and get us a manager and some loan signings . Remember Mr Black said he had no idea how demanding the position could be on his time , Time is something we do not have , please do not allow this opportunity to slip away , we are so close to the line ,get us a temp manager and some loan signings for the push to get us across . But he walked out on us which had nothing to do with the fans & new board.
Also as others say we cannot afford £450k wages plus his back room staff wages & Phil Spencer.
Get real we need to be sustainable, think about the players he never played and what that was costing us too. As much as i love the guy we cannot afford a managment style like that.
Lets get behind Darren & Tommy although we do need some leadership from the bench, i will be travelling up from Portsmouth to support my beloved club tonight

We need someone who is on the up or a top player who is just getting into his first management job. If it's the latter then this is likely to be an end of season appointment.
It's going to be very tough to clinch promotion if we don't get a top man in soon. If we do get into the Championship we will need someone who can manage at that level.
So, Jed and Co. are right to think it through now that they are in the Chair but they had better get on with it after tonight otherwise all will come to nothing. Their most important decision!
It's not going to be Di Canio in my view. Financially it wouldn't work, the players have shown what they think by reversing two of his poor man management decisions and he's impossible to manage for any Board - including West Ham. Forget the petition, it's not going to help anybody.

and is he to blame for the most stupid business done in selling Ritchie to a rival team, that was the most ridiculous piece of business done in my book at a total give away.
Do you not read the facts that were set out as to the circumstances surrounding that sale. Had you done so you would not have written the above.
The give away price as you call it was a lump sum figure not installments and it basically saved the club from administration, a huge points deduction etc etc and allowed the sale to go through.
Had it not been done in the manner it was we would no longer have much resembling a club to support.
Perhaps you should be asking yourself more about the naivety of our club hierarchy not knowing how the tribunal rules work, that is clearly what brought about the embargo and then the trouble in its wake. People like Wray, PDC and Spencer are expected to know these things as part of the fabric of their positions but it was OK for all this money to be spent in their opinion in a gung-ho manner as it wasn't theirs to worry about. Collectively they turned Black against the ownership of the club.
PDC has a record of rebellion and he has done it again, if he is that good where is the queue of clubs taking him on ?????? Please list them.

I'm happy with ward /Miller at the moment so we dont have to rush into a quick decision for a manager
What I do feel is needed is an assistant in the dug to look at the overall game and make substitutions, Bodin or Diggers will do.
Lets hope for 3 points tonight

I hope they've actually given the matter some thought than they're letting on as the press conference yesterday was NOT reassuring - McCrory waffling on about how he WOULD speak to PDC. I don't want the guy back - not least because I think he did the dirty on us and it would only ever be a short term reappointment anyway - but if you're going to do it then you should have done it already not be "thinking" about it.
It beggars belief that they don't appear to know what they're doing. We either appoint someone on a temporary basis until May or make a permanent appointment now. There are enough half-decent managers who might be prepared to come in and do a job for a few weeks, in conjunction with those already at the club like Pitman, Bodin, Ward, Miller, etc. Even if it's just someone to sit on the bench and see how things are going, which seemed to be missed on Saturday, it would be better than doing nothing.
Or, decide if you want a bigger name slumming it at the CG for a year or two (an Adkins or Coyle type) or someone used to working on a budget like Johnson or Yates.
Taking time to make sure we get the right guy is one thing but yesterday gave the impression they hadn't actually thought about it very much - hardly inspiring!

Central midfield was dire we are desperate in that area, out of three we have one injured , one who is not very good and the other is player manager. Pack or Hollands as a matter of extreme urgency please Jed and start interviewing for a manager immediately. I admire Wardy and Millar but having them both on the pitch won't work, however they can't be dropped because they are two of our better players.
Short term answer , Nathan at R/B and Macca to central midfield.

We had a better squad in league two than most league one clubs at the time and if Paolo couldn't of won the league with the resources he had available then it would have been nothing short of a disaster.
Im not disagreeing with the fact Paolo did a good job because he did but any half decent manager could have won league two with the team we had.

I appreciate a rushed decision could be the wrong decision, but a temporary manager with experience who has the same work ethic that the players have bought into to take us to the championship is a must ASAP.
However as some posters have mentioned does the board have the desire to go all out for promotion this year. Most fans want it, I know I certainly do, so let's give everything we have & if we succeed then sit down in the summer & get things sorted out without the panic.

From both sides there are so many issues surrounding this man. let us not forget that he and Spencer went to Black last summer with a new contract and ultimatum, and he has now done something very similar to Jed and put in an im movable deadline, as if he or Jed had any influence on the FL to hurry things up. He then resigns his position and has walked away from the club, and then spends the whole coach journey on the phone to his his back room team while they are thankfully traveling to Tranmere, a journey which almost didn't happen as he, so I'm told, cancelled the bus. He then enters his office in the dead of night, not illegally, but to avoid seeing and speaking to people at the club. I ask the question, despite his undoubted coaching ability, are these the actions of a balanced person in a position of responsibility ? I think we will have to agree to dis agree about him coming back, flawed genius ?? quite probably.

I think they got away later than 10 more like 1pm but the fact is he was hyper.
As I have said before, I didn't always agree with his methods on the blame culture, and he does have undoubted coaching talent, that is without question, but the financial side is to me a bit disturbing, and when he loses it like he frequently does he does have a disturbing tilt to his character, very unstable.
Big shame that many will remember him for the poorer side of his nature as opposed to the talent within.
With his limited experience I can totally understand Jeds position, damned by some if he does, and equally damned by others if he doesn't.

God cant people stop living in the past!
I would take right now Paul Tisdale, Alan Curbishley (prob spelt wrong) or Nigel Adkins (dream on!)
I wonder how an Exeter City fan might be thinking as they are in the play offs with a good shout at promotion again.
All those throwing about the 'Paolo left us' routine conveniently ignore that when Tisdale coming to STFC is concerned.

PDC got us on the map
PDC got us promoted
PDC got us to the top of L1
PDC got us the the Paint Pot Final
PDC got us more media recognition.
if you lot seriously want championship football without a manager we wont be going there- simple as.
without additional players coming in we are not going to the championship.
this new lot should be on the case and working 24-7 to make it happen.
mark my words it is going to be very different from now on in and dont start moaning when it happens.

You seem to of moved away from your original point about getting Paolo back and aimed it towards suggesting anyone who now thinks thanks Paolo and good luck should be begging him to come back.
We done our part in showing how we feel towards him,you and i know he was bl00dy worshipped here and the likes i have never witnessed at Swindon before.
I would not be against him coming back but feel to much has happened and him coming back just might have an adverse effect.
Cmon Swindon 3 points are needed,it will also stop a lot more bickering on here. My prediction 1-1 but hope for 3-0

My recommendation goes to
Paolo Di Canio of Swindon,
he hasn't had a job in a few Weeks, but I think he could do a good job here...
