Williams inspired by MacDonald belief
6:00am Monday 4th March 2013 in STFC News By Andy Warren
Andy Williams bundles home Town's equaliser
ANDY Williams believes the belief new boss Kevin MacDonald instilled in his players at half-time played a major part in Swindon’s dramatic 2-1 win at Coventry.
The Robins trailed 1-0 at the break at the Ricoh Arena following an early strike from Franck Moussa, but Williams struck with five minutes to go before former caretaker player-manager Darren Ward thumped in a header to win it in the 90th minute.
Williams revealed the positive nature of MacDonald’s half-time team-talk allowed the players to believe in themselves, and admitted that may not have been the case under former boss Paolo Di Canio.
“It’s a slow learning process at the moment because we have only known him for a couple of days, and it was a lot different at half-time,” he said.
“If we were going in 1-0 down in that situation previously it would have been a very different half-time team-talk, and he was very positive indeed and he has given us a lot of belief in ourselves again and has got us passing the ball.
“We have shown a lot in recent weeks, not so much Tuesday (1-0 loss to Bury), but in the last few Saturday games we have shown we’ve got character and can go behind and get things out of games.
“We showed that again, and I think we deserved a win because we would have been disappointed with just a point because we showed enough.”
Williams was pleased to end a goal drought which saw him fail to find the net in eight games, but admitted he should have put the match beyond doubt before the break after missing two good chances.
“I did well to get in some of the positions I did, but with the first one especially I’ve got to hit the target, and then the second one was going in until it hit a bobble and hit the post. Good knows how the keeper saved it after that.
“I thought it was going to be one of those days, but things changed.
“I came off best in a little game of pinball we were playing on the line, and thankfully he couldn’t save the last one and it went into the back of the net.
“I didn’t realise it was eight games, but in the last three or four I have been very disappointed with the way I’ve been playing.
“For a few weeks we didn’t know if we were coming or going, and I think a lot of the lads found it hard. Possibly me more than others.
“There is a big relief from everyone, because anyone who watched the game would agree that if it was on points we would have won easily.
“We dominated large parts of the game and it looked like it was going to be one of those hard luck story days, but luckily we the goals we needed late on.”
The former Yeovil man was also pleased for Ward, and admitted the Town squad owed both the defender and Tommy Miller following their spell in charge of the first-team.
“I think it’s clear how hard they have had to work over the last two weeks, and we worked so hard for them and wanted to do well for them which possibly made it harder because we put things in the wrong way,” he said.
“He said he owed us one, but I think we owed them a few and it was nice for him to be able to get the goal and that win was certainly for them.”

Williams is lethal from one yard out!!
Seriously though, you could see his relief was palpable when he scored albeit he should have had at least two in the first half
So...Oxon, Old Stager, Laz, LR (ps you two need to make up, after all we are all STFC fans) etc. etc. let me put on record how delighted I was and sincerely hope that Willo will continue to repay the faith that many show him on this website

Ward and Miller looked stressed out, desparate for something to go right after the turmoil of the last weeks and the disapointment of the PNE trip. The frustration was so evident, passes going astray, every long ball going to a yellow shirt. It just wasn't a performance that the Town were expected to produce.
So what a breath of fresh air Stas match was. Even going a goal down, the whole team had a belief that they could play and were worthy of their position in the league. Even going behind you could tell that they didn't panic, there was a different mentality, a feeling that a great weight had been removed off their shoulders.
I, for one, am glad that we have the run in that we do. We DO perform better against the top teams, We DO trip up against the lower ones.
Out of the curent top 9 clubs, we have only lost one match to Brentford, something that soon will be put right.
Keep the faith. Some have never lost it, but it surely has been tested.

... Great decision making from k-mac. He has already showed a faith in players ability which has been lacking for a while. I always felt the passions and motivation under the Pdc regime was very good, but there were times when it seemed the players were fraught with fear following the slightest misdemeanour.
Pdc has drilled the team exceptionally well. IMHO k-mac will show them more respect and give them the belief to go on and claim a top 2 finish.
Great start. Coyr's

Fact is he got lucky with the scrambled goal(1 goal in 8 games is simply not good enough!) and both he and Collins need to find their shooting boots if we're to harbour any real promotion hopes.

I think we all agree that Andy should score more but the ability to get in the positions he does is his strength.
I likened him to Sir Don last night because that is how I remember him and I suggested that maybe Don could help with the finishing part :-) Don would take it round the keeper and score, Andy tries to shoot past him.
The memory of Don led me to search the web for videos of the man and I found the following link:

Many of the younger fans will know the name but may never have seen him in action. I think the above is a classic Don goal that should be shared with young and old.

Great day out it would have been so unfair to even draw the game we dominated so much. I had a photo by the Ernie Hunt sign outside the ground, posted it on facebook for my dad who is 83. Marginal disappointment that Macca went straight off after the game, i did NOT want him to copy Paolo but i walk over and wave would have gone down well. I am sure this proves he is his own man. Promotion here we come
Things are obviously going to be different than they were under the old regime. The calm after the storm might not be as exciting, but if we keep winning I'll be more than happy.

Tough fixtures for a new manager but we play better against better teams and given no midweek game this week before Walsall then after Brentford away a 7 day gap until Yeovil away it'll give him time to understand the players better...and they him.

Wiz, I wasn't taking the mickey. It's just that, with everything that's gone on lately, and promotion still there to be won, next pre-season is a long way from my thoughts. I'm never too bothered about where we prepare for the season or who we play against. And the results don't matter. It's all about getting the players fit and sharp. I know many people have a different view. Good thing too. We can't be agreeing with each other all the time!
The point I was making that after all the turmoil its something that needs to be planned soon by the club, and the players will have something different this July, apart from heat and pasta, you never know, they may just enjoy what ever Supermac has in mind. Then again if Jed is prudent it may just be fatigues at Liddington, lol.

This is Div 1 and both will get better and are relatively young.
Sure they miss chances but have other attributes that have made us one of the leagues top scorers.
25 a season strikers are hard to find and generally have a short shelf life when they get poached by higher division sides.
Pericard, Dossevi & Benjiman are all available I believe.

Is that the same wilma and joan with 25 between them this season in a team sat 3rd in the table?
.
LOL - we need a new strikeforce, clearly. Nobody else chipping in either, with a goal difference of only +33.
.
Bring back Dave Mitchell.

Southcoast - you weren't wrong -let's face it there were 3k people who thought he should have went off before half-time!
Fact is he got lucky with the scrambled goal(1 goal in 8 games is simply not good enough!) and both he and Collins need to find their shooting boots if we're to harbour any real promotion hopes.

Tough fixtures for a new manager but we play better against better teams and given no midweek game this week before Walsall then after Brentford away a 7 day gap until Yeovil away it'll give him time to understand the players better...and they him.

Roll back that time from August and where does it leave us, hmmm, about now, so really old mate, not so wide of the mark after all. Blimmey I can hardly believe that we are in March already, lol, time is just flyin' by, so where do you think the pre season will be done ? no doubt it will be elsewhere this year. Ourgate maybe?the wizard wrote: Just wondering where the next pre season training will be, and to what level of intensity. In fairness the last two pre seasons have given the players fitness which has often won us games. A different approach may mean it will be reached in a different manner. Hopefully we will not be taking our foot off the pedal.Blimey Wiz! Pre-season? There's still a quarter of this one to go. . Different subject - as someone said we shouldn't be using a good weekend as an excuse for PDC bashing. However, if he has been following events at the Town, he might have learnt that, for all his immense popularity, it's the club we support not any individual.

I still have faith in both Williams & Collins.
