No approach from Sunderland for Town first-team coach
LUKE Williams has spoken to Sunderland manager Gus Poyet this week, but only to congratulate his former boss on his appointment to the top job at the Stadium of Light.
Williams worked with Poyet at Brighton after the Uruguayan brought him in to work with his development squad on the Sussex coast in 2010 and is well thought of by the Black Cats chief.
Swindon Town have been bracing themselves for an approach from Poyet for their first-team coach’s services after the 45-year-old took charge in the north east, but no such offer has been forthcoming as yet.
Williams said: “I’ve spoken with Gus and that but there’s no approach. I spoke to him to congratulate him and ask him how it came about and the discussions he’s had but nothing more than that.
“The only thing that crosses my mind is the next game, that’s it. All I think about is the next training session and the next game, that’s it.”
Both Swindon manager Mark Cooper and chairman Jed McCrory have praised Williams’ work at the County Ground this week, and he is grateful for their backing.
“It’s fantastic,” he said. “One of the most important things is to have support. That’s the biggest thing you can have in a sport when you’re competing and every week is a battle.
“To have support from the powers that be is the best thing you can have, so to hear those words is fantastic. Hopefully we’ll be able to continue to do a good job and keep people happy.”
