SWINDON TOWN: Ajose delighted with display
“THERE are not going to be many teams who will be able to stop us if we play like that.”
Nicky Ajose’s words after Swindon Town’s 4-0 victory over Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Saturday echoed the confidence running through the Robins squad at present.
Ajose, a loan signing from Peterborough, scored the third goal in the crushing win in south Yorkshire and promptly told the local media that he feels Swindon are almost unstoppable when operating at top gear.
He said: “We feel we’ve been playing well but we’ve just not been getting the rub of the green or creating scoring chances. This shows what we can do if we play anywhere near our maximum.
“There are not going to be many teams who will be able to stop us if we play like that.
Rotherham threw everything they had at Town in the opening quarter of the match, during which period Alex Revell and Ben Pringle spurned golden chances for the hosts and Pablo Mills hit the crossbar, but Swindon remained unscathed and went on to dominate the final hour.
That resilience and stubbornness are character traits manager Mark Cooper has been trying to instill in his players of late and Ajose was pleased that the team’s plans were perfectly carried out.
“The manager and the coach and all the staff have made it clear to us what we need to do when times are like that. We’ve executed that and these are the rewards for it,” he said.
“They always give us the right information and it’s down to us as players. They can take us to the water but they can’t make us drink, so to speak.
“To get the performance as well as the result was really pleasing.”
Ajose has now scored four times in nine appearances since making the temporary switch to Wiltshire, and he is loving life with Swindon.
“I grew up just wanting to play football and that’s what I’m doing at the moment,” he said.
“The team’s done well over the last couple of games and as long as the team is doing well then I’m happy.”
