THE SAM MORSHEAD COLUMN: Where did that year go?
6:00am Saturday 19th October 2013 in STFC News
A YEAR ago this week Swindon Town started losing its marbles.
On October 14, I received a call telling me Jeremy Wray had been stood down as chairman to be replaced by Sir William Patey. The next day the news was confirmed by the club and for the following six months events at the County Ground became unpredictable, unbelievable and barely gave us a moment to breath.
It’s amazing to think that was 12 months ago, and how different the Robins’ landscape is now.
We’ve been through two transfer embargoes, three managers, two owners, a play-off campaign, countless legal issues, enough players to fill an NFL roster, transfers that never happened, transfers we never thought would happen and both Chelsea and Aston Villa have visited the County Ground.
A blitzkrieg attack of information on every front; a year of our lives that we will never forget.
A year ago this week I was just minding my business, writing the match report for a 2-2 draw with Coventry. It was entirely impossible to predict what was about to happen.
While I can complain until I’m blue in the face about the hours of work which followed over the next six months, looking back on it all I wouldn’t swap it for the world.
Because at the end of it all Swindon’s fans still have a club to support and, what’s more, they have a club to be proud of. And myself? Well, I’m back to getting at least six hours sleep a night.
