THE SAM MORSHEAD COLUMN: We can't handle the truth
6:00am Saturday 19th October 2013 in STFC News
ENGLAND qualified for the World Cup on Tuesday night and immediately the truth-sayers were out in force to ram home the point that we’re not going to do anything special in Brazil next year.
Dur! In the immediacy of victory over Poland there were very few who spoke of the Three Lions’ imminent charge to global glory, and even those who did laced their comments with sarcasm.
Why can’t we enjoy qualification for a Samba World Cup for what it is, which, if you hadn’t guessed, is qualification for a World Cup?
No one in their right mind expects England to win the bloody thing, so stop stressing the point. It’s boring. It’s tired. And damn it, you’ve even got me doing it.
As a nation it is much more enjoyable to watch a major international event if your country is involved. We’re involved. Therefore, we’re entitled to get excited.
We’re not hyperventilating over the possibility of Andros Townsend scoring from halfway in a 7-0 victory over Germany in a Maracana final, we’re looking forward to the biggest sporting spectacle on the planet that little more because we’re part of it.
There’s no harm in making the most of small pleasures once in a while.
