WYCOMBE Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth thinks Swindon Town’s humbling at Macclesfield on Saturday was the worst possible result for his side ahead of their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash tonight.

Wanderers come up against a Town side licking their wounds from the 4-0 spanking they suffered at the hands of the non-league Silkmen, and Ainsworth doesn’t expect the Robins to be feeling sorry for themselves when he takes his team to the County Ground tonight.

The Chairboys boss is expecting a backlash of sorts from Swindon, and he would have preferred Town to have avoided an upset at the weekend.

“It (Swindon’s FA Cup defeat) is probably not what we needed,” he said. “They’ll take some severe rollickings from their manager and their tails will be up because they’ll have to put that right on Tuesday.

“I have got a squad who want to take this competition seriously. They want to get to the semi finals and we’ll be doing all we can.

“It’ll be an interesting one, it’ll be a test for us and a character builder for the players. But I’m confident. I believe we can beat anyone and on our day I think we can.”

Ainsworth has eyes on winning the JPT, saying: “I’ve just said to the boys the odds are we might not lift The FA Cup. We’ve got slimmer odds to lift the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, so let’s give it a real go.

“Every cup competition, every game, I’ll take seriously. I want to give Swindon a real go and hopefully progress to the semis in that.”

Wycombe will be without Matt Bloomfield through suspension, while Paris Cowan-Hall, who scored in Wanderers’ 1-1 draw with Crewe on Saturday, came off with a calf injury at half time and is a doubt.

Ainsworth, however, will be buoyed by the return from suspension of midfielder Josh Scriven.
