FULL TIME: MK Dons 2 Town 1

FIRST half goals from Aaron Wilbraham and James Tunnicliffe saw Town slip to a 2-1 defeat away at MK Dons tonight.

Wilbraham struck inside two minutes, slotting home after David Lucas had saved Luke Chadwick's shot.

And although Swindon hit the woodwork through both Billy Paynter and Jonathan Douglas, the hosts went two up thanks to Tunnicliffe's header.

Town rallied in the second half and halved the deficit in injury time through Danny Ward, but it was too little too late as they suffered defeat in consecutive League One games for only the second time this season.

Manager Danny Wilson had rung the changes from Saturday's 4-0 thumping against Bristol Rovers, with centre-back Gordon Greer making way for Sean Morrison, and Vincent Pericard making his full debut at the expense of Charlie Austin up front.

If Town's defensive change was intended to shore them up, it backfired spectacularly as they got off to the worst possible start with just 65 seconds on the clock.

Luke Chadwick robbed Sean Morrison, sprinted away from Scott Cuthbert and, although his shot was saved by David Lucas, the loose ball fell straight into the path of Aaron Wilbraham, who tucked into the empty net.

Minutes later the pair were at it again, with Chadwick causing chaos down the left before centering for Wilbraham, who drove straight at Lucas.

Swindon's first opportunity came on 10 minutes, when Jonathan Douglas fed Danny Ward and, after a mazy dribble, he forced Dons keeper Willy Gueret into a low save.

But the hosts were soon back on top, with Chadwick's cross finding Mark Carrington unmarked in the middle of the area, but the midfielder somehow failed to test Lucas.

In the 14th minute Town were almost back on level terms. Jon-Paul McGovern's delivery from the right took a slight deflection off Dean Lewington and fell invitingly for Billy Paynter.

The 22-goal top scorer met it on the volley, but saw his 15-yard effort crash against the cross bar and away with Gueret beaten.

The visitors were beginning to have more of the play and Alan Sheehan warmed Gueret's palms from a free-kick before, straight up the other end, Jermaine Easter fired over having played a neat one-two with Carrington.

But Town were inches away from drawing level on 35 minutes when McGovern's cross was only half cleared.

Jonathan Douglas, standing just outside the area, flicked the ball up for himself up before striking a low drive which beat Gueret, struck the inside of the upright, rolled back across the goalmouth and somehow stayed out.

And it was a miss that Swindon were left to rue just two minutes later as the Dons doubled their lead.

Peter Leven's corner was inch-perfect and defender James Tunnicliffe escaped him marker to head firmly past Lucas.

Having twice been denied by the woodwork in the first half, it wasn't a case of third time lucky right on the stroke of half-time.

Danny Ward did well to get to the by-line, and his centre was met by Paynter a couple of yards out.

It seemed to take the striker by surprise, however, and under pressure from David McCracken, he managed to bundle the ball against the post and to safety.

Swindon started the second period brightly in a bid to get back in the game, but it was the Dons who again looked more clinical in the final third, with Mark Randall striking just wide five minutes in.

With 58 minutes played, Wilson took his first two throws of the dice by bringing on axed duo Greer and Austin at the expense of Morrison and Pericard.

But they continued to lack the attacking spark and defensive solidity which has summed up their season so far.

Paynter headed wide Sheehan's free-kick on 74 minutes, but clear cut chances were few and far between despite an abundance of possession.

Randall went close for Dons with a dipping strike from distance, and Dean Lewington headed wide at the far post as they looked to put the contest to bed.

And the less said about a long range Kevin Amankwaah effort for Swindon with 10 minutes remaining, which troubled the scoreboard more than Gueret, the better.

Danny Ward pulled one back in stoppage time with a rising strike which gave the Dons keeper no chance, but it was Amankwaah's effort which summed up Town's night - promising situation, good position, but must do better.

Now is the time to bring in loan players, the team have just run out of steam. It's sad to say that but DW and AF have known we have had a lightweight squad for some time now.
Stll at the end of the day they have done us proud just to fall at the last hurdle mmmmm

dissapointing again sounds like we conceded two sloppy goals,i have been saying for a few weeks now that we need to strengthen the squad as the current set of players have done well but are looking knackered now! really hope we do not start to slideout off the play off places as all the good work would have been wasted! questionable team selection, also does mr pericard really have his heart in this club?? looks a bit off the pace to be honest although he has not had much game time surely though he has a point to prove and is just not here for his salary!

2-1 LOSS Oh dear looks like our luck is just so bad at the moment what can you do when we hit the woodwork 3 times and was it twice on Saturday as well. Blimey talk about bad luck. Keep the faith fans as its all to easy to panic and get very negative. 3 hard away games I would take a draw from each so a win at Brighton is now a must.
Why is at that fans start negging about the play-offs and saying that's it our season is over how pathetic. Fans can have their say OK but why all this garbage about season over??

As I was not at the game, can't say we were the better team or not, going on this report another sloppy goal given away by an individual mistake and once again cannot defend deadball situations, (corner), unfortunately it has happened all too often, add to that diobolical bad luck with hitting the woodwork 3 times, it looks like Danny has a big job ahead to get the confidence back by the time we play Brighton. IMHO, he has a nucleous of 11 players that have to play every game from now on. Pericard is a huge disappointment, Ritchie has not done anything to impress, Easton and Timlin are not the kind of subs that can come on and change a game when we are behind, so there really is nothing in reserve that is capable of making a differance. Really hope to be proved wrong but said last month that March would make or break our play-off hopes, with 5 more big games on the trot to come, it's not looking good based on present form, lets hope we get a few breaks ourselves like the Dons and Gas enjoyed.

swindon 1969 has it spot on. Town are a team who have been too successful for their overall strength and are now being found out. We're having a good year playing (mostly) very entertaining and positive football but the expectations of fans have been raised by the excellent efforts on the pitch. Hence, now things are getting tough, the fans are starting to complain - wrongly in my view. Patience is required with a view to finishing the job next year - if we cannot make the playoffs this year (still a good possibility).

Most important, support the management. They have far more reason to want success than any fan. Was it not £10m. that AF said it had cost them so far? They will want their money back!

Faith and patience please!

This is a very serious setback, if Danny Wilson cannot stop a third defeat in a row, the play-off hopes are finished, without any doubt. Game over until next year!!

The play off hopes are no way finished!!! It aint over till its over. The next 2 games we might only get 2 points but if we win half of the following 10 games we will be there so keep the faith!! Just got back from the game....couldnt understand why JPM stayed in the centre circle for most of the game when he should have been on the right flank. Big Kev aint fit dont think we will see him for a couple of games. Pericard ....awful.

We should get one thing clear. This was not an unlucky defeat. We had our moments but MK were sharper than us throughout the game. It was a defeat caused by poor team selection. Pericard was awful - and there's no point in dressing it up with excuses such as lack of match practice. I don't think he's lazy. He just doesn't read the game, seems unable to jump for a ball and never has control of it. Morrison is a good player but there is no way he should replace Greer. His error for the first goal seemed to stem from a lack of urgency. I can't agree with this notion of resting players because we have more difficult games coming up. Look where it gets us! We've just tossed 3 points away and we still have those games to play. I couldn't see why Amankwaah was allowed to stay on the pitch for 5 minutes when he could hardly walk. It's a minor miracle that MK failed to exploit that and score a third. Full marks to McGovern for getting himself out of one tricky situation when the only option seemed to be to pass to Amankwaah, who was in no condition to receive the ball. Paynter yet again ran his socks off and Ward terrorised the right back into some terrible challenges late in the game. Wilson should show a bit more faith in the Paynter-Austin partnership - starting on Saturday. We looked much better when Austin and Greer came on - but by then the damage was already done.

Come on people, get a grip. Due to our brilliant run from December to March we are in a position where we can afford a little dodgy patch of form and still make the play offs.

Surely you didn't think we'd keep up such a record til the end of the season. We all knew that our first 11 (when fully fit) are up to scratch but the remainder of the squad needs some work.

Just get behind the lads/management, who have done so well so far and we'll make the play offs, keep the faith!!

I squirmed through 94 minutes of absolute rubbish. Score should read MKD 2 Clueless FC 1. Players looked tired uninterested lifeless I dread to think what Southampton,Norwich and Leeds and even Brighton will do to us, playoffs we would not make playschool playing like this. As for getting behind the team and club I am probably so upset because I love the club so much and I shall be there later today to cheer on the reserves v Swansea

Blimey what a bunch of turncoat supporters some of you are. Okay so we're going through a bad patch but come on, these lads have done brilliantly so far this season.

We all knew March was going to be a good test, plenty of time to get back on track.

Keep your peckers up!

Raef, this was a very poor performance. I still think we have have players good enough to get promotion but we have to send out our best players to do the job. Supporters deserve a lot better than last night's fare. I spend a lot of time encouraging people to get out and support the club. I would have been embarrassed last night if I had taken someone along for the first time. Wilson has quite rightly received a lost of plaudits for what he has achieved this season. I am sure he is big enough to take a bit of stick when he gets it wrong - and he got it wrong badly last night.

I was at both the game last night and on Saturday. I think Danny’s changes before last nights match were dubious – easy to say with hindsight I guess. Ward is a striker, he’s scoring goals for us out on the left, why not draft him in upfront if Billy or Charlie need a rest? Don’t we have a highly rated left winger sat on the bench? Sorry but Péricard needs a few reserve appearances before he’s back in the first team as he wasn't sharp at all. Our run was always going to come to an end some time but I don't think 3 points are out of the question on Saturday. As well as a dip in form luck has played a large part in these two defeats!

For me, success this season should be measured in the amount of improvement that we've made compared to last year. To that end this season has already been a great success. I hope we don't get promoted - worst thing that could happen to us this season. We'd get a pasting in the Championship with this squad. Patience will allow us another year to improve on this already decent set of players.
