FULL TIME: Brighton 0 Town 1

CHARLIE Austin's second half strike handed injury-hit Town their first win in four attempts away at Brighton this afternoon.

Austin scored his 14th of the season in the 69th minute following a good lay-off from Jon-Paul McGovern, and it was a gritty, determined display in which Swindon defied the odds.

Brighton had plenty of first half chances as they dominated proceedings but were unable to convert them, and Town's cause was made even tougher when they lost David Lucas, Vincent Pericard and Danny Ward all to injuries by half-time.

But Danny Wilson's side held firm to record three vital points in their push for a play-off place.

Here are the ley moments from today's game:

One min: Brighton launch an early attack and work the ball out wide to Kazenga LuaLua, who skips past Stephen Darby and sees his low strike deflected wide for a corner.

Eight mins: A lovely move down the right involving Inigo Calderon and Elliott Bennett sees the latter whip in a low ball which Glenn Murray meets unmarked at the far post.

The front man somehow taps wide from a couple of yards, but the linesman's flag saves his blushes.

12 mins: David Lucas looks to have picked up a hamstring strain and is treated by physio Dick Mackey before substitute stopper Phil Smith comes on to replace him.

15 mins: Alan Sheehan's delivery from the left is scuffed back across goal by Brighton full-back Marcos Painter, but Danny Ward can only fire high and wide under pressure.

18 mins: A short corner is worked as far as Simon Ferry on the edge of the box, but his delivery is headed out by the Brighton defence.

It falls only as far as Ward, who connects on the volley from 25 yards, but puts his strike straight at Peter Brezovan.

22 mins: A long ball forward to Glenn Murray is chested into the path of Bennett, who in turn feeds Andrew Crofts.

Brighton's skipper takes the ball on and drives a low shot which narrowly goes the wrong side of Phil Smith's upright.

25 mins: Bennett's free-kick from the right flank is met by Murray at the far post, but the lone front man can only head well over.

27 mins: Best chance of the game so far. LuaLua strides across the pitch and feeds Bennett out wide.

The youngster's delivery is perfect and Murray's header beats Phil Smith, but thankfully for Town skipper Gordon Greer is on hand to clear off the line.

33 mins: Town are forced into a second substitution, with striker Vincent Pericard hobbling off to be replaced by Mark Marshall.

37 mins: Marshall controls well on the right, strides forward into space and unleashes a shot which is closer to hitting the corner flag rather than the back of the net.

41 mins: A superb lay-off from Murray gives Gary Dicker plenty of time and space to have a go from 25 yards. However, the Seagulls midfielder drills his effort wide.

46 mins: Town's three substitutions are now all used up, with Danny Ward replaced at half-time by Craig Easton. It looks like Swindon are lining up with a 4-5-1 formation in the second half.

49 mins: Dicker releases Bennett with an inch-perfect pass to disect the Swindon back line. The winger, however, can only lash his strike from a wide angle well over.

59 mins: A long ball over the top is misjudged by Adam El-Abd and Charlie Austin races clear. He shoots from 12 yards, but drags his shot disappointingly wide of the far post when he should have at least tested Brezovan.

65 mins: Town are starting to press forward and following a decent spell of pressure Sheehan's corner is met by Greer.

The skipper's header is firm and on its way to the corner of the net until a smart stop from Brezovan, who smothers the ball at the second attempt.

69 mins (GOAL 0-1 Austin): Marshall's cross from the left is challenged for by Ferry. The loose ball drops to McGovern inside the area, who lays it back to Austin, and the front man makes no mistake with a crisp, low finish.

79 mins: Jonathan Douglas is fouled 25 yards out, and Sheehan steps up to curl the resulting free-kick inches wide of the far post with Brezovan beaten.

90 mins: Town are doing everything they can to slow the game down - holding the ball in the corners and taking their time over every throw in.

It may not be pretty but Swindon are grinding this out.

90 mins: LuaLua picks up on the ball in the middle of the park and strides past the challenges of Craig Easton and Ferry.

He strikes low and it looks to be heading for the bottom corner, until the fingertips of Phil Smith get in the way. It's a superb, match-winning save.

BRIGHTON (4-5-1): Peter Brezovan; Inigo Calderon, Tommy Elphick, Adam El-Abd, Marcos Painter (Nicky Forster 75); Elliott Bennett, Andrew Crofts, Alan Navarro (Chris Holroyd 70), Gary Dicker, Kazenga LuaLua; Glenn Murray

Subs not used: Mitchell Walker, Gavin Hoyte, Jim McNulty, Gary Hart, Sebastien Carole

TOWN (4-4-2): David Lucas (Phil Smith 12); Stephen Darby, Scott Cuthbert, Gordon Greer, Alan Sheehan; Jon-Paul McGovern, Simon Ferry, Jonathan Douglas, Danny Ward (Craig Easton 46); Vincent Pericard (Mark Marshall 33), Charlie Austin

Subs not used: Kevin Amankwaah, Lecsinel Jean-Francois, Michael Timlin, Matt Ritchie

Come on Town but I'm concerned that Billy & now Pericard are injured. Once again lack of buying decent strikers will buggar up our season. Oh well League one again next year I suspect. How come Brighton can sign Luola Luala & we cant !!!!

LuaLua is a loan signing from Newcastle so he hasn't been signed, he's the brother of the better known Lua Lua.

Only 4 wins and we may miss out on the play-offs!!
Southampton v Swindon - Tough but they may try too hard

Hartlepool v Swindon - Not easy
Leeds United v Swindon - Which Leeds will turn up, but just maybe!?

A very hard day for the lads but it sounded to me that the three subs all did a great job. What a debut day to face - bad pitch, awful stadium, team and formation changing around him but he seemed to get better as time went on. Good to see the reserve performances being recognised in the squad too. Did we see Marshall give his best performance? It sounded like he has learnt to both pressure defenders and hold the ball. How many more hamstrings?

Credit for todays result - whether we won ugly or not, still a good result under the pressure of the last couple of games - and the injuries.
I can't see this Pericard seeing the season out with us , either through injury or cut our losses time.

The way the scores went today shows how just fine the line could be between claiming 2nd spot, finishing in the top 6 and missing out altogether. Early in the 2nd half Huddersfield, MK Dons, Milwall and Colchester were all winning and we were being held and slipping out of the top 6. By full time Milwall were the only other team around us to have won and we've now opened a 5 point gap over 7th. Agree with most of the above points in terms of the remaining fixtures, at least 13 points from the games against Hartlepool, Tranmere, Exeter, Walsall, Wycombe and Brentford would go a long way to securing a play-off spot. How we do in the tougher games (on paper) will probably determine how nervy the final day of the season at Milwall is. A good set of results against those around us, a tough ask given how many are away games, could yet see us launch an unlikely assault on 2nd spot.

Twists and turns to come no doubt, but a vital win today. You Reds!

Just got back. A cracking result for town. Many have been on the managers and players back this week (including some very defeatest posts at beginning today) but they deserve a lot of credit after that performance. Our luck in terms of injuries has well and truely come to an end so for second half it was a make shift team. DW has been criticized for his subs this season, but bringing on Marshall was inspired. Brighton couldn't cope with him and while at times he tried to do too much was a real threat all match. MOM goes to Dougie. Once again brilliant and proved that he is comfortably one of best players in this league. Charlie worked his socks off again and proved there is a lot more to his game than just goalscoring. Smith did a great job, doing everything asked off him. All together a great day. We've had a blip but every team has and will, we must stay behind the team.

Fantastic result in very injury ravaged times. Eastie and Marshall did very well with the latter having his best game for us ever. Hamstrings popping like anything what is going on??. I did hear a while ago that Sheehan blamed his on the rowing machines and he hates them could this be a training hazard for our players, hope not. Obrien is suffering badly also with hamstrings so is there an issue in training. Still a great win and well done the fringe players and the new guy from Liverpool did well. To sum things up though how many fans would have taken a point from the 3 away games including Southampton I certainly would have so its only the Rovers set back that has gone against us and I see they reverted back to their usual crap selves and only raised themselves for our game it seems. For me anything at Southampton will be brilliant and a bonus but these injuries are getting very worrying. Pericard is taking a lot of flack but truth is hes is not fit and has not been since coming here. Security word just about sums things up and how weird "real-pain"

Have to agree with you Bas Robin, a fantastic result against the odds with 3 injuries + Paynter unfit to start. I have to add this back four are the best we have fielded when it comes to keeping clean sheets and well done Smithy for his part. We now need to support Chaz. Does Liverpool have anyone to spare?

Got caught out a couple of times early on, then seemed to settle down well. Looked comfortable on the ball and distribution was good. Warning: as the visitors' view at Brighton is probably the worst in the League, you might want to seek a second opinion! I would take my hat off to anyone who can give a detailed account with confidence. I do know it was a good all round performance. Marshall played better than I ever expected to see from him, although he did benefit from some naive Brighton defending.

Brighton were able to get Lua-Lua because of Lomana (who I think a few perople have got confused as the player at Brighton now).

Kazenga clearly said when he signed he spoke to his brother and as a former Brighton player told him to go there and get some first team football.

OK so Kazenga does look a decent player and probably could do a job for us - but most signings for most other L1 sides (Norwich, Leeds, Saints etc besides) are not good enough for STFC - simple as that.

I don't see many Ferry's, Ward's or Darby's (who has started in the Champions League this year!) at these teams!

DW may need to be less fussy now as we only have one week left - and if these are long term injuries we may need some reinforcements.

Though we do have Ritchie for the left if Wrad is out.

Marshall has been up top in the reserves if needed - or we could try Billy Bodin - has been banging them in all season.

Failing that it could be a case of 451 like we did at the start of the year - with Marshall going out wide right and JPM tucking in - then we would need Ferry to push on to support Charlie in the middle. Plus we have Easton and Timlin who can come in the middle to if JPM is staying out wide.

This could actually work in our favour - as we now have 3 very tough games and going 451 will make us more solid and could help us not to conceed - by doing that means we can't lose - and 3 draws would be excellent results - we could then possibly nick a win in some if we can convert a break away or corner.

With luck the Southampton match will be called off due to a waterlogged pitch ! To be serious, so much depends on who can be fit to play on Tuesday. The most serious potential omission from Town`s squad has to be Billy Paynter who works so well with Charlie. The Swindon Express seems to be back on the rails but at least one point at Southampton is a must.

Great rsult never expected it especially when Dav Lucas went off, however Phil Smith had a good day as did the subs, taking nothing away from this result DW must get some cover and quick if the club really want to get to the play offs.
Just think AF the revenue it will bring in , not only that the missing supporters will come out of the woodwork.
I wish the club well and I just hope this week DW will bring in a few more player, also please let Dave Lucas be fit for thr next 2 games, Nothing againsy PS but the Southampton game will be a big test.

I don't think a point a Saints is vital, though I'd obviously love something. I think we need 5 more wins, that will give us 78 points and i'd be surprised if that wasn't enough to get us in the play offs. I think we can pick up four wins at home and at least one win from Hartlepool and Wycombe. I will see anything else as a bonus. I think the autos might be a step to far as we would need to win at Saints and Leeds as well as get something at Col U and Millwall. We are picking up a lot of injuries and don't think we have enough in the tank to play at our best every game this season.

When I said " must " I was really thinking from a psycological point of view - picking up points on a run, etc. That would give the lads extra confidence before the dingdong with Norwich as well as another point in the locker.

I personally think and kind off agree, we really need the win tuesday night. We need as much momentum as possible for next Saturday.
Norwich are in great form and always seem to score. Confidence needs to be high within the camp.
Personally I think Lucas would be the greatest loss to injury, his command of the defence will be much needed as we face the leagues top strikers(messers holt, martin, barnard and lambert) all in one week. To come out of the next week witb two clean sheets will be a miracle with the number one keeper. Without him makes the challenge even greater

DW has clearly said on more than one occassion that the reason we have "not" signed anyone (lets just ignore Pericard, Ritchie and now Darby since Jan on top of the summer intake) is becasue of the quality we are trying to sign - nothing to do with money!
