Ferry: Fans helped us lay down our marker

SIMON Ferry believes Town have laid down the marker for their League One promotion push, and urged the club’s supporters to back them every step of the way.

Swindon’s 1-0 win at Southampton on Tuesday night was arguably their best performance of the campaign, and they were roared on to the memorable victory by more than 2,000 travelling supporters.

Danny Wilson’s side are now firmly cemented in the play-offs and only five points adrift of an automatic promotion spot, and Ferry is confident they can achieve their goal with the fans’ help.

“Southampton was a great result and that sets the marker down for us now going into the run-in,” explained the midfielder.

“We had two bad results, but to bounce back and beat Brighton and Southampton is superb and the boys are absolutely buzzing.

“People thought we were just going to slip away now but we always had the belief that we would come back and start winning games again, and that’s what we’ve done.

“We’ve shown that even when we do take a couple of knock backs we will come straight back again and go at it.

“The fans played a massive part though - they were brilliant and have been all season, especially away from home.

“That’s exactly what we need. We’ve had decent crowds everywhere and if they could keep it up until the end of the season then the boys would really appreciate it.”

Ferry will miss Saturday’s game against table-toppers Norwich through a one-game suspension, having been sent off at St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday night.

And the 22-year-old is “devastated” to miss Town’s clash with the Canaries, after questioning whether he deserved both of the late bookings he received.

“In the first one he was going for me and I was going for him, so I thought he should have booked both of us, but the referee thought I went in worse than their player did,” said the on-loan Celtic man.

“For the second I didn’t think I touched him and the boy started rolling about when there was nothing in it. It’s never a booking but the referee was under pressure with the fans on his back.

“I’m devastated to miss Norwich on Saturday - it’s one of the biggest games of the season. But there’s boys who came come in and do a good job, so I’m sure we will be fine.”

The referee on Tuesday night seemed to favour the home side with most decisions throughout most of the game the saints full back Thomas was holding Marshall everytime he got the ball and from what i can remember only got pulled up once for it. Most of the saints players particulalry there back four were holding our players all the time because they new they lacked pace at the back and we proved that.
As for Ferry's sending off it was an absolute joke and i do think the ref played to the crowd as alot of the refs like to be the centre of attention and he certainly did that.

Saints fans behind me were even commenting/questionn
ing what several of the decisions were about and how lucky they were to get away with one or two of the Saints tackles(?)/holds.
I know I sohouldn't do it and that I'm not the only one but when you look at the league table I shiver when I remember Charlton equalising in BOTH games so late in injury time....take those 2 goals away for a few seconds and imagine how the league table would look!! The Leeds game is big already but will be even bigger if we beat Norwich and Leeds drop points to Millwall.

i do think some lower league referees try to orchestrate matches sometimes. ie go with the crowd or make for an exciting finish.

astonished to read that Bristol Shi1tty are about to sack Johnson, how big do they think they are all of a sudden after missing out on the playoffs last season?! he was 'the best manager' going a year ago.

Although I dont expect our lads to get three points from the Norwich match on Saturday, I`m confident that the Town will get to the play-offs as they deserve. Alas it`s not always the best teams that win matches and I very much hope that we can sneak into second place . A trip to Wembley sounds exciting but if the area could be loaded with drunken Leeds or Millwall fans.............

Gosh, I`m beginning to think you dont like Bristol City ! Some good players in Div.1 or Div.2 are not good enough for a starting eleven place in a higher league. The same goes for managers. City are determined to get Prem. footie into Bristol and know that Johnson is not the man to help get it. I was talking to a City fan only yesterday and he is surprised that Johnson is still there. However he concedes that Johnson has the ability to get an average Div.1 side e.g. Yeovil into the Championship. Poor Gary !

But enough of shcity's woes, back to our own!Ferry will be sorely missed on Saturday, would think Easton will play in his place. In the cicumstances think we will do well to get a draw against the best team in the division.Unfortunate
ly think the back 2 back defeats against Rovers&MKD's will prevent us from getting automatic promotion but I hope to be proved wrong.

Yes all top 6/7 teams with the exception of Norwich have hit bad patches, just maybe this could be the Towns day why not????
with the reserve players out to prove themselves who know's.
No matter what the Town does we support them.So lets hope DW can bring in a few new faces, still the deadline is only a couple of weeks away so it's a case of wait and see

GOOD LUCK ON SAT

Simon Ferry has been a revelation during his loan spell, and I for one would love to see him on a permanent move next season. This I think hinges largely on where we are come May. I believe we are far more likely to sign him if we are a Championship side.
As to the fans, the support this season has been far superior than last season, both home and away. Well done everyone!, but I have recently (Bristol & MK Dons) still witnessed behaviour that is counter productive. For example, booing and misplaced chanting during the game! If there is anything that is sure to discourage players from performing their best its being booed at whilst the game is still in progress! Yes, if you really have to, express yourself at the end, but please, whilst we are still competing keep it down to constructive and encouraging efforts.

But who'd have thought we'd get the double over Southampton or thrash Leeds - a good turn-out of support and much noise could just turn things our way - keep the faith!

Who'ed have thought we would do Leeds 3-0 ? , so no doudt on our day we can beat anyone in this division, with the two away wins the confidence will be sky high, so a good result is a real possible.

The home loss in the cup doesn't really count as we piled on the pressure at the end and were only beaten on penalty kicks. Our home form has seen us win 10 times and only lose twice in the league. So we have good odds of making that 11 on Sat. COME ON YOU REDSSSS!!!!!

I really hope northstand, doverred, midlandred are right, however we are going to be short of a half dozen first choice players, and we happen to be playing the best team in the divisionso it's going to be a tough ask.On the positive side when me ,Wes, Tom , and Tom come to the cg together to watch the lads we have not lost a single game, and we are coming this saturday lets hope our run continues!

An interview with DW has just been posted on the official site - a new player is coming in tomorrow (not half a dozen but every one helps) but still a mystery as to who it is at the moment.
But so far most players (subs etc.)have done really well when called on! Glass still half full here!

Security "bill-fine" Yes I am, I am!! Fine with the performance of the lads. Fine with the management and Board. Fine with Ferry who continues to have a very good season. Fine that every game I get to watch means something. Fine with Norwich on Saturday no matter what the score. Well that's pushing it a bit. The difference might be in the strength of their bench I think. 2-1 Town! COYR!!

I sat with some very quiet Southampton supporters on Tuesday night. They didn't say much all game except one who muttered "the number 30's a good player."

It makes me smile when I think back to when Ferry and Hutchinson both arrived at the club. Most people thought wow! we've signed a former Premier League striker and some lad called Ferry from Celtic. One went back to the reserves and the other is making a real name for himself in England. We struck gold with Ferry.

Just seen Ferry's second yellow card on bbc sports highlights, complete joke he never touched the guy. There is no way their player could have jumped up and squared up to our players trying to pull him up if Simon had caught him with that tackle.Class finish from Charlie almost Pele like the way he knocked the ball one side of their keeper then ran round the other side to collect it for the tap in, only Pele missed the knock in!

That goal of Austin's will be clear in my memory till the day I die. The anticipation when he went round the keeper and you just knew he was going to score was electrifying. I thought Ferry was very unlucky to be sent off, but I think referees are under too much pressure to book players these days. 20 years ago he wouldn't have been booked for either of those tackles. There was nothing malicious or dangerous in them. It seems referees don't have much leeway to show discretion nowadays.

PS stroudred, I think Pele just dummied it past the keeper rather than take it round him - but I'm just being picky!

Got agree with that comment. The ref must have been on a different planet. Just goes to show how a ref's decision can change a whole season. And it's no good us complaining as we know the FA will stick an extra match ban on, just like before. We alll saw the result's that brought.

Charlie's goal against the Saint's was the best I've seen him score for us (and I've seen all of them), next best was the one against Leeds.
Composed, cool and confident. How many of those things can be taught?

Over the 46 games of a season, luck seems to level itself out - we were unlucky against MK Dons, but VERY lucky to have kept a clean sheet against Southampton.

No complaints here though - onwards and upwards.

Should also have said that Charlie seems to have developed much more upper-body strength and is not as easily knocked off the ball as he was three short months ago.

Maybe, this is a bit fanciful, but he reminds me a lot of Gerd Muller - the best striker I've ever seen.

Ah yes, Mondeaux, but don't you agree that the Saints were also lucky to concede only one? A lot of their fans - and Pardew - have been going on about how they failed to break us down. Amid all that, they seem to have forgotten Charlie's chance in the first half, his other two in the second half, and Danny Ward's shot just over the bar in the second half. As you say, it evens itself out. We were very good value for that win.

Yes better to swallow the one game ban(I think) and lose Simon albeit for the big one against Norwich, it really pi***s you off though, no way should he have been sent off, as Oiden says though 20 years ago he wouldn't have been booked for either tackle.

Oi Den,

Yes, we were excellent value for the win, and on another day, maybe Charlie might have recorded his first hat-trick.
I was there and, though we took a bit of a battering in the first half, we were (by some distance) much the better side in the second.
The longer the game went on the more I thought that they'd never break us down.
I've watched the BBC video a dozen times, but am still unsure if Charlie was off-side for his goal. Many a linesman would have flagged it.

One Saint's toadie, suggested that our away support was pathetic and Brizzle Rovers was much better.

Well, from where I was sat, I couldn't hear anything from their fans, except a muted "Oooooh" when Lambert (?) hit the bar.

Our fans were excellent and the noise didn't stop from start to finish. Simon Ferry certainly appreciated it.

Onwards & upwards - COYR.

Mondeaux, it didn't occur to me that he might have been offside, even seeing it again on the highlights, but on reflection it must have been pretty close. I think I had my own replay of the goal about a hundred times before I eventually fell asleep on Tuesday night / Wednesday morning. Unfortunately that didn't tell me whether he was offside either! Didn't hear any complaints from Pardew, so I think he must have been on. Big test on Saturday, but some season, eh?
