SWINDON TOWN: Flexi-team

DANNY Wilson insists he will continue to play the role of tinkerman throughout the season, now his new-look Town side have the ability to adapt to whatever is required.

Last year, Swindon stuck largely to a traditional 4-4-2 formation , but just six games into this campaign have also experimented with 4-3-3. 4-5-1 and a midfield diamond.

And as they travel to Carlisle today in League One action, the boss believes his current squad has more than enough quality to alter both system and personnel. “I’m not bothered about a settled system and a settled side, quite honestly,” Wilson told the Advertiser.

“We’ve got the players in there who can be flexible, and I think we have to be flexible.

“In fact we have to be more flexible than we were last year.

“You’ve seen against Southampton that people have to be able to play in different formations.

“Ultimately, the players will win you the game, but if you set your stall out and ask them to play in certain areas and they take that on board, then it is a massive help to us.

“We are more flexible than last year, definitely. We’ve got players who can play in certain positions that we didn’t have last year.”

Despite landing Alan Sheehan on transfer deadline day, Wilson is keen to add more depth to his playing staff. And with the emergency loan window opening on Tuesday, he will be back in the market for at least two players.

“It’s never enough,” he said of Swindon’s current squad size.

“We are never happy and I’ve said that many a time.

“You’ve seen the quality in this division and the depth of some of the squads. And when you look at that you know what we will be up against by the end of the season.

“We need the depth there to challenge that. There will be times when we lose players for whatever reason, so we have to be ready and not be caught short if that happens.”

I suppose having all these good players is great, and I am very happy about that and so are many others, however having them is one thing and getting them to play effectively together and win matches seems to be another.

I'll be VERY intrested to see how we get on today, and at some point I'll be looking to see if Will Evans is going to get another chance, this young man could be the find of the season from the ranks within.

Good luck with the game chaps, Vinnie to score on his old turf and a goal each for King Charles and Thomas, please.

I also wish them well today as all of us do in every game.
The game against Southampton without doubt was a great moral booster not only for the Team but for us fans.
My question is not a peek about a CB or striker who hopefully we will get on loan.I get the feeling DW messed up big time by not getting the replacements in for these 2 players, still it's history now and give him his due he know's how to play the loan market.
Regards to Sheehan this could be a good addition, however we we the last on his list????? still he did well last year
so to the tinkerman good luck and I know us fans are fickle and like to winge but it's our club.

Good luck today

trying not to whinge about this one but tinkering and squad rotation did not work for rafa or claudio in the prem so how does danny think he is going to fare? if you find a winning formula why change unless some-one is either injured or suspended.

I tend to agree Andy. I guess there's a subtle difference between being tactically astute and tinkering. Good luck today lads, get stuck in and bring us home 3 well earned points! U Reds!

We also became a bit predictable and a lot of fans were moaning bcause we didn't vary our tactics....teams like Exeter knew how to set up their stall and a last 5 games of being inflexible and unable to adapt cost us an auto slot.......a bit of flexibility is good and Rafa was just plain finickity, I think DW will keep it simple so to speak.
We had belief in the squad at the start of the season and until mid October I've no reason to change that.
Come on TOWN!!!

Good to see that we are all more or less agreed on this. If we play well today its a good step forwards, any points that go with that will be most welcome especially as we don't want to drop any lower.
Come on lads, performance of the season so far please.

THere is a big difference between tinkering and squad rotation...
I think Danny knows his ideal starting eleven for most games but occasionally you have to be aware of the oppositions strengths and perhaps set up a system to counteract this and conversely set a team up to take advantage of recognised weaknesses.
There is no doubt that this squad is the best and most flexible we have seen since Hoddle's era.
If we can add a commanding CB and another quality CF, then I can still see us in the top two come next May.
3 points today would kickstart the campaign...

A friend of mine has seen a couple of Cheltenham games this season and really likes the look of Wes Thomas who came from Grays Athletic...I may be wrong but wasn't he the one we were scouting/linked with in the rumour mill at the end of last season as a Charlie follow up? At 23 he could be a good option for the future and might be worth watching but Shaun Jeffers on loan from Coventry has been a class act as well.....even younger.
I still don't know who I'd like to come in defensively....I guess it will be good to see who goes on loan from the Premier league to the Championship and then we'll know who may be an option for our league....few weeks yet.

I think that our lack of ability to be able to change the system cost us promotion last year. If you look back at the Exeter home game where they managed to stifel our game and of course that painful day at Wembley where we were pretty much over run by a physical team then I think if we "tinker" the systems we play then that can only be to our ultimate advantage, as long as it is only done when the occassion merits it. It is hard to do but if we could change things around within a game when things aren't going our way that would be a real benefit. For example in the home game against Brentford we left Dossy or Charlie on the half way line when we were defending corners. Perhaps if we had put O'Brien there instead I would put money on the fact he would be first to the ball of any long clearance out of the box. At worst he would have pulled two opposition players out of the box to mark him.
I was also pleased with the JPT draw today too!

Everybody is entitled to post thier opinion but yours are SO extreme, that they just make most people smile!!...

You always make me smile!!...
Yes, we are in the relegation zone now and it is concerning but I think most people would have settled for a point before the game....
Trouble was the previous 4 league matches....
Still, I think a point today was a good result but it's frustrating to see where we are when you consider the squad we have got compared to most in this league.....
It's early days and I still think that we will finish in the top six as minimum...
And I bet that in your heart you believe the same???
