Cuthbert happy with a point

A POINT gained, rather than two dropped.

That is the opinion of Town's vice-captain Scott Cuthbert after the Robins held Carlisle United to a 0-0 draw in Cumbria this afternoon.

Cuthbert, who marshalled his back four to a second consecutive clean sheet at Brunton Park, remained positive despite witnessing the forward line squander a handful of gilt-edged chances as the County Ground team gave a good account of themselves in the north west.

And having come away from the trip with something to show for their efforts against an opposition flying high in League One in the early exchanges of the season, the former Celtic man said the Town squad were more than happy with the result.

“Coming up here with the run Carlisle are on it was always going to be tough,” he said.

“They've scored a lot of goals and got some good wins, so I would say it's a point picked up.

“We've conceded a lot of goals coming into this game but got a clan sheet Tuesday and looked really solid again, I don't think Dave had a save to make.”

Austin's last gasp miss – hitting the ball high over the bar when clean through on goal – bore an incredible resemblance to the striker's Wembley heartbreak.

Cuthbert sympathised with the hitman, suggesting once again that the pitch had its say in the nature of the final scoreline.

“The game was full of positives and I'm delighted with that,” he said.

“On another day the ball wouldn't have bobbled, he'd have put it away and we'd have won the game.”

I have to agree with Cuthbert. Listening to the commentary it appears that we played very well against a side which also played very well and it was a worthy draw (much as I would have loved a win).
On the plus side we kept a clean sheet. The defence played well, the midfield played well, and if Charlie and David hadn't missed their chances we could have won three-nil.
Timlin played well and has definitely earned a starting spot in the next match. Ferry should definitely play every game from now on. (Prutton who?)

All in all, we played well and that's an improvement on the previous league games, so I am hopeful we will do better in the next match.

The fella watching our game in the Sky studio was Scott Minto. At first he was just taking the p1ss a bit - saying both teams were playing decent football but no efforts on target (which he was praying for).
Didn't catch any of his 2nd half comments though - can anyone maybe enlighten me?

Seems to have been corrected now. In the same vein, the match report says we had a shot that hit a "stantion".

wasnt to sure of his comments in second half, just got told about what i mentioned so have to hope someone else heard him haha but i think people should listen up, yeah a couple wins would have been nice but its still so early, virtually a different squad this year and were missing billy but it'l only be a matter of time before we start getting those points on the board. Cant wait for the loan market to open though, hopefuly get a few in. One thing i would have done though is put dossevi on instead of ball but thats my opinion

Whilst I only listened to the game on the radio I felt it was two points dropped - but a draw is a good result.

Draw at Carlilse is a decent enough result, much the same at Hartlepool.Where we have dropped points is in failing to win at home to Brighton, and Brentford. What that means is the home game to Southampton is now a must win game, otherwise we are already starting to loose touch with the top six after only half a dozen games of the new season.Any news on possible new signings in the emergency loan period?

I think that would have been totally unjust to Carlisle. The game was very good according to the Wilts Radio and even though any Town fan would take the win at the end there it would have been unfair to Carlisle. Fair result and another clean sheet at least we are on the up and team are settling down together. Hopefully a good time to be playing Southampton while they are in turmoil. Ferry has made a difference as has Kennedy who was unfortunate to have been taken off. I would like to see Rose used as a left winger as he does cross a good ball but feel at left back he won't get a look in now. Still he had the shirt and lost it so with this squad that's what the team will be all about. One worry today is a Brentford win will send us bottom of the table.

Im sure Danny reading this board would be far more bemused with past comments such as calling for his head, rather than this posting. MY reply was to the two points dropped and as I listened to the whole broadcast on the radio it was very enjoyable and two very good teams battling it out so my posting was in football terms. Yes as I said in the posting I would take the win any day, but thought the result was very fair to both sides. What is wrong with that? I have been at many Swindon games ending in stalemate, and listening to fans say the same thing that a draw was a fair result at the end of the game. Yes?? its called sportsmanship.

Next Saturday 4.45pm if we loose, or draw at home to Southampton, at which point we really are in deep s**t.It now takes on the mantle of a must win game purely from a confidence perspective. We already have gone 5 league games without a win, 6 will start to drain the confidence of the players. You will then see players not wanting the ball, or to take responsibility.Just as winning is a good habit that breeds further wins, not winning, and being bottom of the table has the reverse effect.

Sorry Scott, you might be happy with a point, but too many draws last season cost us (+15 I believe) and 3 this season to go with the 2 losses is just not good enough, to settle for a draw shows a lack of ambition. Football is based on results, keeping it tight at the back and putting them away at the other end. All of which the team of 2010 seem to forgotten to do and earn what they get paid for.

Next Saturday against the south coast team is massive, here is hoping Danny knows what his best team is. Not sure how many he has used so far, but must be close to 18 changes (including subs), I believe only 4 have started every game Cuthbert, Douglas, McGovern and Austin and even some of their performances have been questionable.

Purely from a nosey point of view, very hypothetical, I'd just like to know the content of the conversations over the next few days between Wilson and Fitton, especially with regard to the players in already and those proposed on loan. Obviously we all want success, we all want the team to do well, and be there abouts come May. Now all of that is possible, but after the start we had a couple of seasons back I just hope Fitton keeps faith with Wilson. WE dont want or need any further upheaval.

Yes quite agree with these post a new Saints manager could have a massive impact on the game next Saturday. All too often we see this happen in football. They are not happy fans on the Daily Echo site in Southampton and many are having a go at the fans that wanted Pardew out. I hope that there is substance in what some of their fans say in that the chairman will put many managers off with his constant interference in first team matters. If true this could go our way and keep the post vacant for another week. Any little helps at the moment as the Town battle to get back on track. I'm sure AF would not show the same contempt for Danny in team matters.

It's all relatively speaking Highworth a point away at Carlilse is OK , whereas failing to beat both Brighton, or Brentford at home is not at all OK.3 points from 15 is not good at all acceptable, the dizzy heights of mid-table would be good right now.

I like the positive spin on the league position. But if we were at the top now, I think it would mean there's less likelihood of us being near the bottom at the end of the season! The inescapable fact (or, some would say, FACT) is that we've been the worst team in the league over the first 5 games. As someone has already said, the league table doesn't lie. There are some encouraging indications that we might be turning the corner but let's not kid ourselves about how poor we've been so far.

Swindon's league position and Brentford's result today shows just how tight this league is. In the words of Luggy, though, draws will get you relegated. A draw away at Carlisle in good form suggests that Swindon have the POTENTIAL to be up at the top, but that is all it says.

Agreed, under different circumstances this would have been a good point away to a team near the top, but when you are bottom, just a point will not help you to pull clear in most cases.
