SIMON Ferry believes Town’s new shape suits them at both ends of the pitch, as they look to register a first league win of the season tomorrow.
Fellow strugglers Southampton come to the County Ground this weekend also looking for a change in fortunes, but Swindon have been much-improved since they switched to a 4-3-1-2 system two games ago - beating Saints in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy in the process.
And Ferry reckons that line-up means Town are stronger defensively, while giving playmaker Jon-Paul McGovern more possession going forward.
“(The first league win) is not far away,” he said.
“We beat Southampton in the cup and then played well on Saturday at Carlisle, so that first win is just around the corner now and hopefully it comes against Southampton at the weekend.
“The formation has helped. I think we’re quite good on the counter and it gets JP (McGovern) on the ball a lot more in that wee hole.
“He can create chances from there and we also look solid in the middle and harder to break down, so it’s good.
“We’ve been working on it in training and it will take a while to get properly used to, but it’s something that could really work.”
Swindon currently prop up League One after a disappointing start to the campaign, but Ferry admits he will not cast an eye over the table until the business end of the season.
“It’s only five games in so you shouldn’t look much into that,” he said of Town’s lowly standing.
“I’m sure we will get back up to where we were last year very soon. I don’t really look at it until the end of the season when we are going for things, but if we start winning then we’ll shoot up the table soon enough.
“There’s nothing to worry about just now.
“A lot of the bigger teams who are expected to do well are struggling a bit, but a couple of wins and you’re right back up there.”
