SWINDON TOWN: Swede deal for Town

SWINDON are exploring the possibility of setting up a player-exchange deal with a club in Sweden that could come into effect from next season.

Two youth team players from Swedish second division side Degerfors recently completed a two-week spell training with Town, and youth team manager Paul Bodin was impressed with the standard of their ability.

The link-up was originally organised by former Town chairman Cliff Puffett and Bodin would welcome the possibility of something more permanent being put in place, with players from Swindon also being sent on loan to Sweden.

He told the Advertiser: “There are links in place that hopefully we can forge even stronger over the coming seasons.

“We have looked at things that perhaps we can do in the future. Perhaps some young players can come over and maybe some of our first or second year professionals can go over to Degerfors on loan to enhance their understanding of a different culture, so maybe there are links for the future.

“One of the Swedish players has played quite a few games in the first team this year so that is the kind of level we are looking at.

“We could send one or two of our boys over there and enhance the level we have already got.”

Degerfors, who played in the top flight of Swedish during the 1990s, are perhaps most famous for being the team where former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson cut his managerial teeth.

Tord Grip also had a spell in charge of the club while former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg came through the club's youth system and Teddy Sheringham enjoyed a brief spell on loan there during the 1980s.

“They have won the Swedish Cup back in the 90s and that is the kind of level they are aspiring to get back to,” added Bodin.

The two players, Jesper Karlsson and Sebastian Bergenheim, both 17, return home today but leave with what they feel has been a valuable learning experience that will only aid their development.

“It has been very good to play for this big club,” said Bergenheim. “The football here is very physical whereas in Sweden there is more passing involved.”

Karlsson added: “It has been really good for us as young players to learn as we get close to playing for the first team in Sweden.”

Adver struggling for a story today to come up with this rubbish? How many young players are getting into the 1st team? We keep hearing about our promising youngsters yet none of them have been able to get into one of the worst Town team in our history, apart from Morrison who promptly left us for Reading reserves.

I like it umpcah, very funny. Hi Louis how you doing M8? See you at Accrington next season? Shameful isn't it? I think the club should apologise to the fans for this shambolic and embarrassing season, I thought we were a club on the up.

Perhaps we could foster an exchange of stewards, we send them some of ours in exchange for the blond haired, blue eyed, long legged, nice boobies variety. It would certain give the place an uplift, and match days would be a lot more inviting. Memories are already returning of my days in Varberg, Stromstad, Halmstad back in my 20's, oh yes, all to be savoured, Perhaps thats where I developed my dodgy back!! Game On !!!

Louis, I've heard the same sort of rumours regarding Trollope doing the rounds, hope it's not true but a couple of people who arn't usually far of the mark have told me he will be our new manager next season. Suit the chairman, he's cheap and a "yes" man. As I said recently, better to keep Hart than allow our "assist stripper" of a chairman to make another chose of manager. Over to you LR!!

When I look to the top of League One right now I see Brighton, a team packed with unknown young Scandinavians showing us the cheap way to get out of this division. So I'm pleased Town are looking to follow this tried and tested model for success. Hang on a minute, I think Brighton spent a bit of money on players and employed a talented coach to get them moving up.

The bitterness has kicked-in, sorry. Farewell Championship, hello football obscurity.

Incredible negativity on here. I doubt this exhange costs much (if anything) and bears no **** relation to the quality of our 1st team or impending relegation.

Are you really moaning that we're trying to look at good young players? You'll look like a bunch of **** if we managed to sign an 18 year old Olaf Mellberg on the cheap through this agreement.

Lazaat,High Peak,What is this fascination with Accrington amongst Swindon Fans.If you and all the knockers of Accy. would care to divert their attention to L2 they would see that the much maligned Accrington Stanley are in an excellent position to be promoted this season. This by a club squeezed between Burnley and Blackburn, half hour ride from Manchester and a population not much bigger than W.Bassett.Where as we Swindon supporters are facing relegation with a catchment area of approx.200,000 and no competition in the immediate area.I think we should start looking up to them rather than using them as standard to be despised.By the way did you know they were one of the founder members of the league? Our town should be ashamed of the amount of support we give to our local team.AM I WRONG?

Old and wise,
NO, you are not wrong, and don't forget, Accy Stanley have adopted their saying, the worlds favourite football club, and after their crash and rise through the ashes, you have to respect them, and even in the last few years supporters have been out with buckets collecting at other bigger clubs home games, and those donations have helped keep them afloat. their manager has worked miracles on a zero budget, best of luck to them I say, because football needs clubs like them. Fitton could learn plenty from them on how to run a club, and at least their players have WANTED IT, and are paid a whole lot less than ours. Plenty of lessons to be learned from them.

Oldandwise, I agree with your post and what you said about good old Accy and you have answered the reason whay i keep saying we shall be playing them again next season, but if it makes you feel more comfortable then i could instead say Morecambe, Stevenage, Aldershot, Burton Albion, Barnet or Crawley as none of these teams should be in the same division as Swindon for the very good reasons you have pointed out in your post! So i am not trying to be vindictive to clubs like Accrington Stanley as i admire them very much for what they have achieved with their small fan base, but as i said us being in the same division as them is like us being in the same division as Manchester United or Liverpool.

I think as far as many are concerned, which ever option he chooses, Fitton has one year and six games to get us back into League One, and then the exodus of S/T's will really kick in, he'll be able to count them as they will all be sat around him in the directors box !!

Not for this idea at all.

Instead of looking to Sweden, why don't Swindon go and have a look for the best talent in the Wiltshire area, or maybe scout England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Rrepublic of Ireland?

There's enough young talent here, if you look hard enough!

Although if it's a Fitton idea, the closest we'll get is Swindon tops being sold in Ikea!

As Oldandwise hints, we have a very large catchment area for fans and are the only league side in the county.

There's tremendous potential, but under the current regime it won't be realised.

What do you mean 'won 't be realised.......'. It never has been realised under any previous regime although the size of the catchment area has never changed and the amount of people within it has only grown. Let us be realistic and admit that we will never get a large (honest) following, as most people are only looking for a reason to not attend the CG, as they always look for a scapegoat (e.g. manager/board/captai
n/prices etc) to use as their excuse to moan about not attending.

No good looking in UK and Ireland for any talent anyone over the age of 5 that can actually kick a ball has been signed by Manure or Chelski by then . We once signed a Swedish lad to play for us it was Autumn and we thought when it gets really cold and icy he will be a real asset , we ran him out on a freezing day and he was hopeless when I asked why he struggled so much he said he had never played in the frost and cold before because they postpone the league up there where he came from in winter ( for obvious reasons) lot of good that did us .

We do have a big catchment area but a lot of the people within it are only first or second generation Swindon, as the town has grown pretty quickly and would possibly support another team.

Also, a lot of football fans would rather now watch a successful team and would look to watch the bigger teams on Sky and pick one of them, unless we could get to the Premiership.

What we would gain in bringing these types to the CG when we are any good, we would lose when we are crap as this lot will be the first that will become disaffected and the first to start grumbling.

Our catchment area is no bigger than Bristol Rovers (might even be smaller, despite having 2 teams) and they seem to be in the same boat as us and I think their average gate is a fair bit less than ours.

The only way we would ever get new fans to come along in consistent numbers and to stick with us for years to come, would be to be consistently successful - and that is a big challenge.

I can't say that I agree too much with that statement, Hertz, as there are plenty of kids locally who'd give anything to be given the chance to play for Swindon.

However, there is a lot of snobbery still in the game: I grew up in a poor part of South Wales and there were plenty of kids there who had the potential to be first class footballers, if their talents had been developed properly. Local clubs like Cardiff and Swansea would not look at them, as they were from bad areas.

One of England's best players of the last 10 years was born in a 'bad area' - Huyton's notorious Bluebell Estate. He was turned down time after time by clubs, just because of where he lived, but in the end he was given the chance by his home town club and became both a club and country favourite.

That player's name? Steven George Gerrard. 387 appearances for Liverpool with 84 goals and 89 appearances for England with 19 goals.

Who's to say somewhere like Swindon, Chippenham, Calne, Highworth, Warminster etc. doesn't have a potential Steven Gerrard or Lionel Messi waiting to be discovered?

SAPFanSTFC says...
3:31pm Fri 8 Apr 11

I'm a mess but they missed me and I was born only 7 iles down the road!?
...
All too often our decent local prospects have gone to Arsenal, Spurs, Southampton, Everton etc....
they all want to play for big clubs and greedy parents don't have the nouse to keep them local for a couple more seasons and then they end up on the scrap heap as unwanted and neglected youngsters.....very sad!
....
Having said that - if we don't start playing one or two of our current crop soon then we'll be losing a few more I think.....assuming they are as good as some think.

Pewsham Red says...
4:31pm Fri 8 Apr 11

Sad but true SAPFan. The likes of Tozer, Jutkiewicz and Henshall would have been better advised to have stayed with us a bit longer and learnt their trade.

If you look at the lads that Arsenal and Man U send out on loan each year that have little or no prospect of ever making a career at their parent club, it is really sad.

Of course these clubs don't care because they can get the pick of the best youngsters around and discard the one's that don't quite make it, which would be the majority, I would guess.

The trouble is, a lot of these kids are from the modern era where they are constantly told they are the best and never appear to fail, like at sports day and when even the thickest kid gets 8 GCSE's.

The lure of fame and fortune seems to win, when all they need is a bit of sound advice telling them to stick with a club where they will at least get a game and that they really aren't destined for the top.
