SWINDON TOWN: You can be heroes - Di Canio

You can be heroes - Di Canio You can be heroes - Di Canio

PAOLO Di Canio has urged his players to grasp the chance to write their names into the Swindon history books by beating Barnet tonight and send the Robins through to the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy at Wembley.

Town host Barnet at the County Ground with all to play for after the two sides drew 1-1 at Underhill in the first leg of the area final back on January 10.

Simon Ferry and Phil Smith are the only players left on Swindon’s books who were in the squad the last time Town played at Wembley in 2010 League One play-off final, while Paul Benson has played, and scored, at the national stadium while at Dagenham & Redbridge.

But on the whole, there are few opportunities during a player’s career to play at Wembley and Di Canio believes that alone will be all the drive his squad needs to beat Barnet tonight.

“There are millions of players who play football but just a few thousand have the chance to play at Wembley,” he said.

“This is the chance for these players to put their name in a frame that will be forever in the history of this club and for that reason it is easy for me to prepare the players for this game.”

Tonight’s game has certainly caught the imagination of the Swindon fans, with well over 7,000 tickets sold by the close of business yesterday and the club are anticipating a crowd of over 10,000 tonight.

But Di Canio has issued one final rallying call to urge fans to shun watching the game on television in favour of making the trip to the County Ground.

He added: “We have already sold a good number of tickets but for anyone who still does not have a ticket and lives a few hundred metres from the County Ground, then why not come to the game and feel the emotion?

“The fans can sometimes underestimate the fact that they are very crucial and the players feel their support.

“I am hoping that we can have 10,000 or so there then it will be amazing. We need their push because the game will be hard.

“The fans’ support will be crucial if we have a tough moment and the players need that extra push. I insist, please come to the County Ground.”

Tonight will be the final for me as I won't be able to make Wembley, but I'll be giving it 100% support, support, support from the DR, as usual. Good news on Flint, can this season get any better ?? yes it can, and yes it will, promotion and beating the yellow scourge from down the 420, things just go from better to brilliant.

PdC knows about this opportunity for our players - despite being one of the most gifted players to grace our leagues he never made it to Wembley!
.
This will only be my 4th opportunity to go in 25 odd years and only our 5th in 130 odd years full stop!
.
10000 would be amazing - shows the casuals are returning - which only bodes well for remainder of the season and beyond

Barnet are unbeaten in 5 and won their last 3 matches which is good form for a side in the bottom half. it only takes a sending off or an unlucky deflection to turn a game. so don't jinx it by talking about when final tickets go on sale!!!!

Don't underestimate the magic of the cup. Huddersfield were unbeaten over 40 odd games in the league, second in L1 and we thrashed the pants off them. PWe need to be absolutley on it tonight from the off.

Reading comments like your, gives me an uneasy feeling, You can't see how we can lose? well as others have reminded you a dubious goal, a sending off, a critical injury, poor ref decisions and even a bad day at the office and Barnet rising to the occassion, (they have already beaten Brentford in their last cup game) these are all reasons we could lose and best to keep the gob shut until we've actually won the game! Bet there were a few Arsenal supporters in 69 thought the same as you when little old town came to Wembley.

Have to say I think the posts calling for caution are spot on. People who think this is a big occasion for our players might care to consider that it will be bigger still for most of Barnet's players. I think they were one of the o worst teams we've seen at the County Ground this season. They have improved a lot since then. I can see them being a very different proposition tonight - and we hardly had it all our own way in the first leg.

There's a whole game of football to be played yet. If we are at our best, they won't beat us. If not, who knows?

We are unbeaten at home in something like 15 games - including seing off a L1 and Premiership side

LR, I think there's a big difference between having confidence in the team's ability and taking victory for granted. When you, for instance, talk of giving Flint a 5 minute cameo at Wembley, when we are effectively starting from scratch tonight, I think you put yourself on dangerous ground. Of course we are strong favourites to win. We are the better team and we are playing at home. But that combination doesn't always produce a victory, as we all know.

There's a difference beteen being confident and over confident, as you should have taken note of last season with your belief that we were too good to go down. Frankly your optimism was to be commended, but unfortunately you were proved wrong on too many occassions as you later had to conceive we lost too many games to teams with lesser ability and maybe that could be put down to a team that were over confident and didn't show the opposition respect. I don't need to be reminded that is not the case with Paolo and his team, I also doubt you'll read anywhere that Paolo has ever said he thinks we cannot lose either.

If we were to lose, yes, it would be against the form book and a great disappointment for all of us, but if you had seen as many upsets as some of us on this forum have you would know it can happen. 40 years ago yesterday Hereford beat Newcastle 2-1 in the FA cup 4th round replay after drawing 2-2 at St James park. One of our own, mainly ex-Pinehurst schools Dudley Tyler was one of that team. (he was later sold for $80k to West Ham alot of money in those days by the way).

The point I and others have tried to make LR, that you fail to grasp, is don't count your chickens before they have hatched, you have been proved wrong so many times in the past, maybe, just maybe a little bit of respect for the opposition and caution is better than just looking at stats and thinking a game is over before it's even been played.

I'm between the two camps. My natural superstitious nature means I would never say we are at Wembley. But that said Ive predicted we get to the final from the start and encouraged everyone to take the 50/1 on us winning it, way back. Nothing has changed and if anything our form has got better. Barnett have undoubtedly improved but even the most pessimistic Town fan would have to concede as London points out our form is extraordinary.

Ay suggestions for thinking what team Paolo will put out tonight? I think he'll go.

Caddis Devera McCormack Cibbuchi

Not saying that's the team I'd put out but just how I think Paolo will go tonight. Thoughts?

If we have already won tonight's game, I don't know why Barnet don't do the decent thing and just stand aside. dreamer, wish I took some of that 50-1, hope you have a nice littler earner in your back pocket soon.

Don't think you'll be too far out with your team selection, surprised you left Ferry out, is he injured? he has to be more effective than Risser.

Maybe as we are at home, Kennedy instead of Cibocchi and Connell or Murray in place of Magera. who know's, hard to predict who Paolo will start with, don't think he will risk including Cox, but I would think Boateng will be on the bench. Phil Smith is included, so any 4 from 7 for the remaining places.

Great post OTR - unfortunately like the biblically acclaimed parable of the sower, the very valid points you make will be lost on LR and therefore will "fall on stony ground, not germinate and die off."

As the immortal Greavsie once said and has been copied many times- "it's a funny old game Saint"

Those of us who as you say have seen and been part of upsetting many a higher teams applecart in years gone by hope that town's barrow load of Cox's don't get turned over by Barnet's costermongers.

We all want a Town win for sure but we're neither arrogant or naive enough to think a Barnet victory couldn't possibly happen.

Statto by all means blow that trumpet loudly tomorrow and shout to the world that you and your beloved number crunching were right - but only after the fat lady has stopped singing, the result is in the bag and the Wembley Way walk is definitely on for those that want to go eh!.

Yes Oi Den, I'm an old Pinehurst boy, Bill was the deputy head when sputnik (secret was the head), His son Ricky wasn't a bad goalie. Didn't play much table tennis myself but I used to play in a 6 aside team with Dudley in my teens, I've never seen anyone do things with a tennis ball at his feet in the playground that he could do, At school he had a hole in the heart and it was only after that got fixed he was able to turn professional, otherwise he would of surely played for the town. He still lives in Hereford, heard from some friends he is a bit bigger in the stomouch nowadays though. Happy school days, never forgotten.

After he'd gone to West Ham, I remember listening to a radio commentary (then Radio 2 rather than 5) on a game v Man United: "This boy Tyler can go past his full back at will." I don't remember who the full back was but I know it didn't surprise me. Great pity he never played for the Town.

Remember it well, all in front of the bank, and I know, 'cause I was there.

Full credit to Phil, he was simply magnificent, and you are right, we have a lot to thank him for.

The Commandments of PDC.

1. Thy fans will shun the box for it is nought but a false God.
2. Thy fans will show the country what a wonderful following STFC doth have.
3. Those yellow bellies that lie in thine shadow will hear the roar and quake in fear for March doth grow near.
4. Thy team shall enter the arena with the pride of champions and salute the faithful.
5. Thy team shall award the faithful with a merciless display full of passion and desire.
6. Thy opponents will hang their heads as the battle draws to a close, the will submit to the righteous STFC and pray for that final whistle that will bring their suffering to a swift end.
7. The supporters of these false idols that travel from barneticum will see the error of their ways.....and sign up to the STFC Fan Club.
8. The chosen official will blow his whistle...thy faithful will rise as one and salute their hero's...such a roar will awaken the Gods.
9. PDC will greet his conquering hero's one at a time to shower them with praise..in return the Hero's will honour the mighty PDC.
10. Slowly PDC will face the faithful...raise his hand in acknowledgement...th

Jock, OTR, Den et al - Maybe you should phone up PdC and tell him to reign it in too!
.
Read his we've got one foot in the door article - that is the view point I'm coming from
.
Yes we could lose - but we are better than Barnet - FACT - and if we play like we have for 20 odd of the last 24 games Barnet will have no chance!
.
This may come as a shock to you all but I have no influence over a game!
.
I could say we will win 10-0 or lose 10-0 and it will make no difference!
.
So why harp on about last year???
.
All I tried to was was pin point winnable games which should see us safe - i.e Walsall, Daggers and Rochdale at home
.
last year and this year is like comparing apples and oranges!
.
Sorry if it bothers you all so much - but I think we will win tonight!
.
If we don't - it the players I fear for - they will get it in the neck more than anything posted on here about me being confident!

MalkyM - ref Ritchie, had you not taken every opportunity leading up to the end of January to spout off about my fount of all knowledge re ritchie (which was no more than a confident gut feeling on my part, yet you seem to always want to make it into something it isn't), then I would not have even bothered to mention it, as gloating certainly is not my thing at all.

The fact that you harped on back to my comment, at every opportunity you had, made me feel the need to ram it down your rather boring, tedious throat. Now be a good boy and swallow it whole.

Just had an interesting conversation fan with a knowledgeable wycombe fan who wished us all well but warned that this is a typical Sanchez game that he loves to win. Remember N Ireland and those giant kills he had at wycombe. He will wind his boys up very very tight. We are going have to be on our game I think big time.

LR, PDC's comments are perfectly reasonable. He says we are the better side - and I think we are all agreed on that - but he also recognises that victory is not inevitable. Until your latest post, everything you have said indicated that you were taking victory for granted. There is a huge difference between those two positions. If you take victory for granted, you disrespect the opposition, you risk looking c0cky and you set yourself up for a fall. PDC is cannier than that. Some of us just find it hard to understand that once bitten you are not twice shy.

Is this the same Sanchez that sat in the dug out and then disappeared down the tunnel, while his guys stayed out on the pitch at half time?

The same Sanchez that looked a very lowly figure, the same Sanchez that travelled alone from his squad on the return journey ?

The same Sanchez that looked divorced from his team ?

The same Sanchez that got the tactics, team choice and everything else wrong ? or is there another ?

Mm! well once again we'll have to agree to differ - my take from your comments was that you were assuming that it was a factual certainly he'd stay rather than your "gut reaction"-still that's the trouble with the written word - intepretation as we see so often on here don't we. Wiz, I have to say I thought that game at the County Ground would prove to be his last game in charge, such was his disconnection from the players. But, to be fair to him, he's pulled a rabbit out of the hat, increased morale and got something going there. If we are on our best form tonight, he'll need all that morale and more.

I take you are refering to the belief that last year we were too good to go down - the fact is we were!
.
That is why we saw pretty much the entire squad sacked - Plus 2 managers, the entire coaching staff and saw the Chairman resign!!!
.
Also don't forget our best players now - Caddis, Flint, Ferry and Ritchie were all here last year - so if used right we should have survuved - especially as these are expected to form the spine of our team in L1 next campaign

Oi Den, have to agree with you, in all my years I have never seen anything like it from a manager to sit in the dugout at half time and full time.

He's certainly turned it round for them, but would like to see him sitting in the dugout again tonight.

LR, I think you've disappeared up a dark passage with this one.

Despite the fact that we finished bottom by some distance, you still say we were too good to go down? Incredible.
.
We went down because we were a ragbag mixture of lightweights, heavyweights and no leaders. The writing was on the wall very early in the season but you refused to see it. Nobody denies we had good players but nearly everybody could see that there were some vital pieces of the jigsaw missing, and those decent players we did have were demotivated. This does not add up to "too good to go down". It adds up to relegation certainties.
.
Caddis and Ritchie did OK last season but they had no chance of stemming the tide because there was simply not enough strength around them. PDC described Flint as "a man from the cave" when he got here. When asked about Ferry's fitness at that time, he just spluttered into laughter.
.
Wilson's poor judgment and the players' lack of responsibility were squarely to blame for relegation. Hart was a desperate throw of the dice, as any managerial appointment would have been at that time. If Fitton had got his way and been able to sack Wilson when he wanted to - in December 2010 - I don't think we would have been relegated. I think one of the most harmful results in the club's history was the victory over Sheffield Wednesday on 4th December.
.
Still, if the PDC revolution brings what we all hope, maybe the disastrous end to 09/10 and the unsurprising shambles of 10/11 will actually not have been such bad things.
