Di Canio awaits verdict on rival bosses after his own punishment from the FA

PAOLO Di Canio insists it will take much more than a two-match touchline ban to damage Swindon's chances of securing promotion from League Two.

The 43-year-old will have to watch the upcoming games against Crawley and Hereford from the stands following his charge of improper conduct by the FA for his second sending off of the season in the 1-0 win over Macclesfield last month.

And while he is unhappy with the punishment he has been given, Di Canio is adamant that it will not derail the Robins' bid to escape the basement division at the first attempt.

The Swindon boss told the Advertiser: "It is disappointing but it is not a problem because, like I said before, I can be given a 10-match ban and we will win the league.

"They have to do something more to put us in trouble."

Last Tuesday, Crawley beat Cheltenham 4-2 to climb to the top of League Two, but the game was marred by an altercation between the two clubs’ respective managers - Mark Yates and Steve Evans - who were both subsequently sent to the stands.

Town take on Crawley tomorrow night in a promotion six-pointer and Di Canio will be disappointed if no action is taken against Evans before then, allowing the Scot to take his place in the dugout at the County Ground.

"I am curious to see what is going on with the Cheltenham and Crawley managers,” he added. “If they are not punished for what they did then there is something strange going on against us.

“For this reason I want the fans to come down in numbers again to the County Ground, because we have to play against many people, not just the opponent.

“This is where we need the fans. They need to come in numbers to help us to win the league.”

Swindon’s game against Barnet at the weekend was one of a host of League Two fixtures that fell victim to the weather, and once again Di Canio made the most of the situation by holding a training session on Saturday afternoon.

After a game, those who played the day before usually train differently to those who did not, and Di Canio welcomed the chance to work with his entire squad in preparation for tomorrow’s game.

“If the pitch is in a good condition I would choose to play every time,” he said.

“But it has been good to have the players all training together though because they can help each other more and they can see each other’s strengths and weaknesses.”

I like the confidence of PDC, as I said before possibly a blessing in disguise keeping PDC away from the Fat Evans and his henchman, it seems to happen all to often with these two - Even Danny Wilson if I remember rightly had a fallout with them - it was so much that DW had to unfold his arms.

Last night many of you will have missed a massive upset as Zambia beat Ivory Coast to win the African nations cup in Libreville, Capital of Gabon.

This was redemption for a nation 19 years on from their equivalent of Munich. That day the national team all died bar three players, (who were coming from Europe) just over Libreville. The investigations blamed mechanical failure but there were unfounded rumours of a missile strike. The Gabonese refused Zambians access to the enquiry and resentment was set. "To be Gabon" is to be currupt in the Zambian lexicon.

They resurrected their team and were a point away from qualifying for USA 94. I went to Casablanca, wore my yellow away Town top of the time (!) and cheered them on with the 85 Zambian fans that were able to make it. Amazingly FIFA appointed a referee from Gabon who didn't give a blatant penalty with 15 to go and Zambia lost 1 nil. Devastating for a nation.

Last night a team with one player plying his trade in Europe at Young Boys in Switzerland beat the might of the £200,000 a week boys. Drogba, Tourre brothers, Kalu, Gervinho et all were vanquished and the trophy was lifted for the dead of 93.

Why do it'll this story here? Partly it's a good story that everyone should be happy about but more importantly that the TEAM and it's spirit, is the only thing that matters. Please we have had far too much of it but can the Clarke and Kerrouche apologists please now stop. Please learn learn when a team made up of players from Angola, China, Kenya, Zambia et al can beat world famous players it's about passion, desire and bravery to play their football. Something we have too!

I am astounded that PDC got this ban for waving his arms, when I watched the football highlights the other night and see the way other managers attack the 4th official, for example Ian Holloway, why do they not get punished?.

I may be wrong but that's part of the reason they sold Tubbs.
The wage bill is partly worked on a club's potential earnings for the season. So they said they'd have double the gates they're actually getting. Thus needing to sell to come into that % at the end of the year.
Like I said, I may be wrong but that's how it was explained to me.

Yep. I watched it. It's great occasionally to see an uplifting story in football like this one, after the nonsense that gets served up in this country by a broth of player egos, oiks, angry managers and those plebs at the FA.

You just knew they were going to do it. Ivory Coast ran out of players who had the bottle to take a penalty, although some of the penalties taken by both sides were super cool. Shows the benefit of practising penalties.

Also confirmed the pox match will be televised in the winners bar or whatever it might be called now. Can't see why they can't show it in the legends bar as well. No further info at the moment, but I would think it will be open only by ticket entry.

Bit of shock Rangers serving notice to go into administration, I'm sure them and celtic would love ot be in the Premiereship, The SPL as a whole is no better than div 1 and apart from the old firm have the crowds to match, If they did apply to play in England, wonder what level they would have to start at. They would lose their Euro games, but then again when was the last time they did any good in Europe.

Singing areas, maybe, standing areas, absolutely not - it's part of the ground rules that you'll need to remain seated at all times, not even Jay Wray can change that. Anything to improve the atmosphere as opposed to last time can only be a good thing, but there'll be no standing area I can promise you.

1984,

I don't think Jeremy was disputing the stadium is all seater, but you know as well as I do there will be persons who do not respect their fellow supporters and will stand up and block the view of fans who do follow the rules and remain seated. I don't have a problem with youngsters standing, Lord knows we have all done that in the day when terraces were the norm. I think what Jeremy was hinting at there will be a dedicated area for people who want to sing and stand, it's not his problem to control them, but he doesn't want the day spoiled for fans who want to remain seated by a few numpties who think they are the only town fans that count and really doesn't give a tinkered cuss for the rest of us.

I dont think its very fair calling fans who want to stand and sing 'numpties'

Afterall the town end is the heart of the county ground and just about every in there stands. Its fine for some people not to stand, a lot can due to age or medical aspects, but its not fair for them to call the ones who do enjoy standing and showing passion in a more expressive way 'numpties' and it s not fair to say that they ruin the day for other 'fans'.

Last time at Wembley was terrible for the exact opposite of that, so many day trippers, kept getting fans to sit down everytime they tried to cheer on the town, this led to no fans singing and no atmosphere from the town fans, giving no backing to the players

Sean,

The numptie comment was not meant to undermine Town enders singing etc. FGS, I was a town ender before you were even born. I only meant the numptie comment to any fan that does not respect others that are sitting. (and there were one or two at the last Wembley appearance.(I'm 65 years old and would prefer to remain seated or risk probably tottering over. If I have paid for my seat why should I and others not be able to see the game because some lard arse who thinks it is his right to stand and blocks my view, so called supporters who think it is their right to stand up even if it is against the law have no respect for others and deserve to be labelled a numptie or worse. I welcome Jeremy's comments that this will not be an issue and there will be sectioning to keep everyone happy. i wish you a long happy life and someday if not already you will be a father taking his kiddie to games or a senior citizen and just maybe appreciate then you might understand another point of view.

Got 9 coach seats booked for the Wembley game so that is a wonderful feeling and we are parking in the Green man pub just like the Millwall game so what an atmosphere that was 2 years ago much better in there than it was in the ground. Just going to watch Timlin's mob take on the Pikey's and hoping the Gills stuff Saffend.
Sturrocks got em up for it 2-0 up after 41 mins. Pikeys look rubbish

Pikeys got alot to do second half, can't see them being that bad second half, still fancy this to end up as a draw.

Bullyfish,

there are only seats in the temporary stand left, (behind goal, no covering), think you would be in for a good chance, seats aren't reserved, sit anywhere seems to be the order of the day, if you know your situation Friday if i was you I would get down to the ticket office Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.

Sorry if this is a repeat, system isn't acknowledging my post is accepted.

Well done Mr wray the cup will be ours now i'm sure.
Singing areas, maybe, standing areas, absolutely not - it's part of the ground rules that you'll need to remain seated at all times, not even Jay Wray can change that. Anything to improve the atmosphere as opposed to last time can only be a good thing, but there'll be no standing area I can promise you.
1984, I don't think Jeremy was disputing the stadium is all seater, but you know as well as I do there will be persons who do not respect their fellow supporters and will stand up and block the view of fans who do follow the rules and remain seated.
I dont think its very fair calling fans who want to stand and sing 'numpties' Afterall the town end is the heart of the county ground and just about every in there stands.
Sean, The numptie comment was not meant to undermine Town enders singing etc.
OTR -with you on this I'm a youngster compared to you but still qualify for a bus pass lol!
y beer a low IQ and
The wembley experience v Millwall was also spoilt for me -apart from the result - by Mr R Sole and his mates standing and ignoring pleas to sit down -doubtless fuelled by beer, a low IQ and one shared brain cell and precisely one of the reasons why I'm not going.

OH blast Saffend back to top 4 points clear of the mighty reds but we have 3 games in hand. They beat the Pikeys 2-1. Id say tomorrow is now a must win and hope we tear tubbsless creapies to shreds. Ritchie and Rooney to run riot and Beno can fill his boots. Should be a good gate tomorrow and we need to roar the boys on Town fans. Yoouuu reddddsss

Didn't think the sitting/standing issue would get this controversial!

Personally, I'm a bit of both, sit most of the time, jump out of my seat like I've been burned on the bum as soon as there's a near miss/goal. Squatting half on/half off the seat if we're running at their defence. I can sympathise with both points of view - standing up for a goal, chance, whatever if it's brief isn't really an issue, it's only a problem when you have people who want to stand constantly. Believe me, you can sing sitting down! One of the few good points about this godawful league is some of the older grounds which still have terracing, but people need to respect the fact that all seater stadiums are the norm these days, and every one has sitting as a rule. Standing for long periods of the game will get you kicked out of any ground, not just Wembley - last time I was at Saint Mary's there must have been at least 30 town fans kicked out for that very reason.

Summary - "loud" sections not a bad idea, where everyone will be of the same mindset. Consistently standing anywhere in the ground however, will get you in trouble. Not everyone likes the rules but you're agreeing to obey them once you purchase the ticket, the ground staff are well within their rights to eject you if ground rules are being breached.
