Swindon Town striker closing in on Torquay switch
6:00am Monday 2nd July 2012 in STFC News By Sam Morshead
Billy Bodin
SWINDON striker Billy Bodin is close to finalising his proposed switch to Torquay as the two clubs are near to agreeing a fee for the 20-year-old, the Advertiser understands.
Bodin, who enjoyed a spell on loan at Plainmoor last term, has been on Gulls manager Martin Ling’s wish-list for some time and Ling is believed to have submitted several bids for his services during the off-season.
An offer of around £40,000 is understood to have been turned down by Town around 10 days ago, but the Adver has learnt that the two clubs are close to settling for a fee in the region of £70,000.
Bodin, who has interested several clubs across League One and League Two this summer, appears to be surplus to Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio’s plans for the coming campaign – despite having been offered a new deal with the Robins.
The Welshman did not travel to Italy with the rest of the first-team squad on Sunday.
Meanwhile, Town began their pre-season tour of Italy yesterday.
The team flew to Verona from Gatwick before transferring to their hotel on the edge of Lake Garda.
The Robins will spend a fortnight in Di Canio’s native country and play two matches – one on Thursday of this week and the other next Wednesday.

He wanted a guaranteed starting place each week. Torquay should be able to provide that.
He is a talented you guy, no question, but he simply wasn't experienced, prolific or strong enough to lead the towns challenge for back to back promotion.

.
As if he does fulfill his potential and secures a big money move for L2 (£500-750k) a decent sell on of 20-25% would be worth £100-175k (a tad more than £30k)
.
As poor as Tribunals are at setting initial fees they do normally add in sell-ons to ensure the players current club benefit if they really are a gem
.
Still not convinced it is the best move for him - yes he will get more game time now
.
But - Torquay are not going to challenge next year - they have lost 2 of their stars and fully expect the 3rd to go
So is playing for a mid table L2 club better than learning your trade at a forward moving club?
.
Guess we will see in 2015 where he is

Leaving what is now a League One club with very potent desires to become a Championship club in 12 months, for a much smaller club in League Two hardly portrays ambition to me, even if he will get more time out on the turf.
He would have learned more from seasoned players here in training and then perhaps a loan out at a higher level, rather than remaining in L2. I wish him luck, but I strongly question his decision making ability. The grass always looks greener on the other side.

I will be sad to see Billie go, but if he feels its the right thing to further his career then good for him, all the best to him.
At least his move wont come back to haunt us, (well not in the league) for some years to come, as The Gulls try to play catch-up with us.

He was therefore, loaned out to gain experince - like lots of young players are - and it worked he came back better
.
I agree with Wiz as I have said above strange move and doesn't smack ambition
.
I think he should have gone into PdC office and said I don't want to go out on loan this year I want to be part of the main group and fight for a place - can you guarantee me that
.
The answer probably would have been yes - he could have then signed and developed
.
If it had been no - then he would have been justifed in leaving as he was obviously not in our plans full stop

While agreeing probably with everything said buy everybody there is another element to this.
Surely a lot of this is down to the fact that Wray has given PDC a straight mandate. Get this club into the Championship, and do it so we stay there with a decent squad. Now for his part PDC has delivered Phase One, getting us out of League Two.
Now somewhere along the line both parties would have had meetings before the end of this last season and decided who was going, and who was needed in their place. We are now starting Phase Two, getting us out of League One and into the championship. Wray has clearly said, "no room for sentiment" and words along the lines of, some favourites leaving, but for the greater good of the club.
Now, Bodin fell somewhere in the middle of all of that. Probably seen as 50/50 as to whether he has it in him to make the grade, so he was offered a contract, by a club who this time next year, will be looking to recruit again. Bodin could have been part of that main stay, getting odd games and basically playing for a Championship club. Not necessarily a Championship grade player, YET. He has chosen to blow that chance, perhaps he feels he hasn't got it in him, or does he not want the hard work demanded by PDC, strange decision.
If he is going to do anything about furthering his career, then I think he will go the same way as his father and become a late developer, possibly.

Everyone needs to feel wanted. Lingy clearly wants him, he can go, get a house, settle, get his head down and see if he can make it as a player.
I wish him all the best.

We argue that it's better to stay here and play an important part at a club than move higher and get no games. So how can we now say the opposite and suggest that Bodin should stay here and be on the fringe of things? I don't think his move shows a lack ambition at all. I believe it's the best thing he can do for himself in all the circumstances. The offer of a new contract was probably an insurance policy for us more than anything else anyway. PDC doesn't seem too bothered about losing him.
I agree I hope this negotiating over £30k is not at the expense of a sell-on or buy-back clause

However, when we moan about the younger kids moving on we are talking about them going to a club where they are nowhere near the first team
.
That is not the case here
.
Billy made 9 starts and a couple of sub appearances - which for the actual games he was available to play for STFC was a pretty high percentage
.
I also don't agree we only offered him a deal as an insurance either - as if our insurance was a massive £70k - why didn't we just sell him in Jan?
.
I'm pretty certain we could have got at least £50k with added extras like goals scored, promotion, international caps and sell-ons etc at that time
.
I honestly believe PdC would have liked him in the squad this season if he had shown the right maturity and attitude - like he wants Thompson in there
.
I personally believe the demanding of a starting spot (misprepesented in the press or not) burnt those bridges - which is why PdC has planned the current campaign witout him in mind
.
His interview on the BBC about Billy's maturity clear backs this up

Probably the best move for him as it does give him stability and a first team place under Lingy. Perhaps he believes he can prove himself at Torquay and move on to a better club from there. Good luck to the lad.
I'm not surprised at the move. Paolo had a look at him in the summer, gave him a few games then loaned him out. Then he returned in Jan, Paolo gave him a few games and although he had improved it wasn't enough so he got loaned out. With the arrival of the new strikers and the great form of Benson it must be fairly clear to Bodin he's 4th choice at best. So his option is 4th choice at Swindon or 1st choice at Torquay. Hmm.....
Good luck to him as many have said.

Fast forward to 2014
..... it is just before England v Brazil at the next World Cup Group. Kaka goes into the Brazilian changing room to find all his teammates looking a bit glum.
"What's up?" he asks.
"Well, we're having trouble getting motivated for this game. We know it's important but it's only England. They're rubbish and we can't be bothered".
Kaka looks at them and says "Well, I reckon I can beat these by myself, you lads go down the pub."
So Kaka goes out to play England by himself and the rest of the Brazilian team go off for a few jars.
After a few pints they wonder how the game is going, so they get the landlord to put the TV on. A big cheer goes up as the screen reads "Brazil 1 - England 0
(Kaka 10minutes)". He is beating England all by himself!
Anyway, a few more pints later and the game is forgotten until someone remembers "It must be full time now, let's see how he got on". They put the teletext on.
"Result from the Stadium "Brazil 1 (Kaka 10 minutes) - England 1 (Walcott 89 minutes)".
They can't believe it, he has single handedly got a draw against England!! They rush back to the Stadium to congratulate him. They find him in the dressing room,
still in his gear, sat with his head in his hands.
He refuses to look at them. "I've let you down, I've let you down."
"Don't be daft, you got a draw against England, all by yourself. And they only scored at the very, very end!"
"No, No, I have, I've let you down...
I got sent off after 12 minutes"

LR slight contraindications in your statement regarding loan players, if that was the club or managers ethos loan out players that have potential to gain experience and come back a better experienced player then why didn't Thompson go out and get 20 games or so rather then do nothing last season, players at his age need to be playing therefore bodin brings more experience into the equation yet not a club contender.

Billy has burned bridges this summer with what has been said, and not done by the signing of the contract on offer. Did he really think that for one moment, he, a 20 year old, could twist the arm of PDC and get what he wanted in front of better and more mature and talented players ? or has it been all part of a game, devised at Turkey while he was there ?
