SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio warns winger: tip-tap no

PAOLO Di Canio was pleased with the way Gary Roberts played on his first appearance for Swindon Town, but the Robins manager wants the winger to get rid of any ideas of “tippy tappy” football as quickly as possible.

Roberts, a summer signing from Huddersfield, came off the bench after 52 minutes at Carlisle having finally recovered from the calf and lower leg problems that have plagued him during the early weeks of the season.

The wide man made an instant impression down the left, taking on his marker and frequently beating him for fun, but Di Canio remained concerned about a certain aspect of his game.

The Italian explained: “It’s obvious when he goes one versus one and delivers the ball he is a very dangerous guy. He attacks the back post in a fantastic way, he was unlucky not to score and the goalkeeper made a fantastic save.

“I didn’t enjoy two or three situations in the final third when he started playing with Tommy Miller, probably because they know exactly each other.

“Tippy tappy, tippy tappy is not my football. If you are going to play tippy tappy and then go play the ball through like he did with James Collins or switch, then okay.

“But if we keep the ball with Giles (Coke), Tommy Miller, Roberts – tippy tappy, tippy tappy, tippy tappy – and then we lose the ball, counter-attack and we lose 3-2 what do we have to show?

“We did something that wasn’t constructive, just keeping the ball and allowing the opponents to organise in a defensive moment.

“I am happy when they have a combination because I want to play football but my football is not one, two, three, four, five – moving the ball in a 10-yard space. My football is one, two, three and then boom – change and go through.

“I can accept and I can understand because first game he felt in the game, felt good straight away but from now we have to take away selfish (characteristics) in some way, or maybe negative in my opinion in the way I want to play my football. Then we will be okay.”

Have to say The second goal was pretty direct though, great work in the air initially by Benson then some effective passing and a great finish. When we get it right going forward we're unstoppable, need to finish more chances though (and a few less defensive errors wouldn't go amiss either)

Definately!..we tend to delay getting the ball into the box when we have an oppurtunity, then end up surrendering possesion to the opposition . Our strikers need good service into the box.

Great to have Roberts back as I cant imagine a much more dangerous attacking winger duo in league one than Roberts and Ritchie!

Get those two providing decent service into the box for Williams, Collins, Benson and Co and we're surge up the league!!..SIMPLES

At least this has lifted the lid on his comments about mentality on Sat
.
He was not having a go at the players as such - but just simply trying to drill home his way of playing and thinking
.
He wants more anger and determination from the forwards to make the chances count - see the Williams article
.
He wants his midfielders to be more direct - see above
.
He wants all the players to be dissappointed with a point as we did enough to win - ending the losing streak is no compensation - see the League 2 title in our cabinet and the space next to it for the League 1 one
.
Nothing wrong with that if you ask me!
.
We have some tough games coming up and if we can get through these in and around the mix - I think we will then go an and steam up the league (i.e once we are settled as a side and get a more "attractive" run of fixtures points wise)

great to see roberts and coke back playing so now we can play our best team and start making progress up the table. not sure pdc knows his best CB pairing changing every game is probs why we havent been that great at the back compared to last year where we had the same 2 week in week out. and as soon as williams starts scoring we will be nearly unstopable in this league things are finally looking up at last

It's good to hear his thoughts on the game. At the same time we read that Ablett admits that Carlisle had to play a containing game even at home.

PDC's quick incisive approach will therefore become even more vital to get through teams that sit back to frustrate us.

It might take the players time to get the hang of this quick passing game, but add that to Williams' runs through defences, and we should be in for exciting times.

Just a thought though, isn't this what Caddis, Ferry and Ritchie did time and again?

Not quite sure what point you are making here LR. (I'm not sure who you are quoting either.) I don't think many people would have a problem with that kind of general assessment from PDC. It's the public b0ll0ckings of individuals that cause concern.

I agree the team should be split into attack and defence
.
Defence should remain stable as possible with attack free to rotate around form or opposition
.
However - Don't forget our most shambolic defensive display came at Preston - and up to that point the defense was stable in all competitions
.
The only change was Flint in for Troy about 4 games earlier due to injury
.
In the league this was the first time that Flint Macca partnership had been split!
.
It is far too easy to simply blame changes for individual errors - as lets face this is what has cost us in recent weeks
.
Ward / Flint at Pox could be down to that - i.e. misunderstanding as new pairing
.
However - Flint stepping over the ball against Orient - No
.
Macca miskicking a clearance / Wes questionable (see Jervis' comments) - No
.
I fully expect to at Portsmouth tomorrow that Ward and Troy will be our CB combo and will be for the foresseable future

I certainly don't object to PDC telling us that there is a mentality problem with the players. If there is such a problem, I think we should all be grateful that he's addressing it. And I don't think it's necessarily team changes that caused the dip in form. The players' focus (or mentality, if you like) may have been disturbed by all the changes in the squad. I'm not saying that this will do long-term harm. I just feel that PDC has given himself a temporary problem. And I think he is probably struggling to work out what his best team is. I accept the "horses for courses" and squad rotation argument. But I still think you need to know your best eleven, the team that you would ideally like to put out in most games.

Arge with the line-up although no idea which two centre backs will play tomorrow - Flint, Macca and Ward by all accounts off the boil, and Troy bound to be rusty. Big decision on whether to drop captain Macca, I would.

The one consistently good aspect is Flint wins everything in the air, I would still consider him first choice and if Troy is fit he starts for me.

Alternative could be move Devera to CB and bring in Thompson, but I don't think this will happen.

Great to see Roberts back, De Vita has filled in well, generally, but Roberts should have a bit more quality.

Really hope Williams gets his goal soon, he deserves it from what I've seen so far but he does need to score soon.

Den - think the main issue is we have had a few injuries which has prevented him from playing his preferred XI so far

Roberts is a cert in that but Sat was the first chance he has had to use him
.
Troy looked a cert but got injured
.
Benson picked up a knock and went out but has since come back in
.
McEveley missed a few through injury - but has returned following that too
.

Now as you said the new boys have given him a bit of a headache as how and where does (or does not) fit in Ward, Coke and Rooney in particular

Agree with the last statement - seems some times too much focus is put on the opposition and how best to play them, rather than who to put out to best play our own game. Obviously there're certain games you want certain players in for (against Stoke, where Crouch was eventually going to get on the field, it probably wasn't a bad idea having someone like Flint on for example) but we should have a core team that are all round good enough to play most opposition. Like I say, we should play our own game and dictate the play, certainly at home.

If you cast your memories back we had the tippy-tappy stuff under Wilson. There we were in possession time after time after time, and all we got was pass it here, pass it there, pass it every £"$&* where, and not a shot on goal. There we were in the DR pleading for someone to have a shot, and more often than not, we lost the ball. Frustrating and gained us little. Nice to watch 20 odd consecutive passes but no end result.

The opposition mean while get lots of bodies back and stifle the play. I think he has got this call about right. Best form of defence is attack, hopefully keep the other team defensive until we can get some shoring up done in January ref, the back four. Clearly the Caddis and Cibbo issues were not on the pre season radar, so no additional cover was got in.

Paul Hart had that tactic as well - loads of possession, no penetration. Keeping the ball by passing it horizontally across your eighteen yard box isn't just ineffective, it invites pressure. I'm not saying all out attack all the time, but in keeping possession we should be also building for an attack. We shouldn't be playing for a draw against any team in this league, or any other - play for a draw you're going to get beaten.

Swindon - you've got a good manager and you're a talented bunch of players, knuckle down and believe in your own ability to score goals and we'll go far together.

And watch out for Izzy McCleod tomorrow night, got a horrible feeling he's going to nick one against us...
