Development centres receive windfall
6:00am Saturday 6th October 2012 in STFC News
SWINDON Town Football in the Community Trust received a boost last weekend when they were presented with a £1,156 cheque from Nationwide Building Society.
The cheque was handed over to community development officer Shane Hewlett at the Croft development centre, which caters for five to six-year-olds, by Nationwide employee Warren Messenger.
Warren, whose son attends the STFiTC development centres, said: “Playing football is great fun, it keeps me fit, but is also really sociable.
“I have had a huge amount of enjoyment from playing every week for the last 20 years, so it made sense that I should put some effort into helping STFiTC financially.
“They are passing on that joy to lots of young boys and girls in our area, including my five-year-old son Madison, and I will also be enrolling my two-year-old daughter Isabella.
“I arrange a weekly five-a-side match and the guys pay an extra 40p each per game and that has added up to a decent sum over the year.
“I also arranged four or five charity matches and my company - Nationwide Building Society - have been brilliant in matching the funding for all the staff members that took part, doubling the money I raised.
“I know so many people that play every week, if they could all just put a small amount of time into collecting some extra money and donating it to STFiTC it would make a huge difference.”
Swindon Town Football in the Community Trust delivers development centres in the Borough of Swindon for children between the ages of two and 12. The money will be spent on kit and equipment for these centres.
