GOALKEEPER
CLUB legend Fraser Digby has become the first player to be named in the Swindon Advertiser’s All-Time Greatest Town XI after an online poll of fans and our readers.

Digby was the overwhelming choice to fill the goalkeeper’s position in our team, the remainder of which will be completed by further votes cast on our websites www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk and www.thisisswindontownfc.co.uk throughout the 2009-10 season.

Digby, who made more than 500 appearances during the 1980s and 1990s, polled two-thirds of the vote, in which hundreds took part, to finish way out in front of the next most popular - 1969 League Cup-winning stopper Peter Downsborough.

He told the Swindon Advertiser: “From my point of view I’m delighted, it’s a great honour for me to win.’’

Sheffield-born Digby, who now lives in Marlborough, was signed from Manchester United by then-Town chief Lou Macari in 1986, following a previous loan stint. Fraser Digby

In a glittering spell, the England Under 21 international helped Town to win three play-off finals - including two at Wembley - and a Second Division Championship, becoming a revered County Ground hero to the club’s supporters.

He added: “It was a pleasure to play there for 12 years. I was at the club when we had some of the good times.

“My wife’s born and bred in Swindon. All my three boys were born in Swindon. I still come down and do a few little bits and pieces at the club and I’ve got plenty of friends here.

“There are so many people that are Swindon fans. We had some great crowds in our time and it’s nice that they hold me in that high esteem.

“The relationship I had with the Swindon fans has been absolutely fantastic.

“A big thing for me when I was playing for Crystal Palace and QPR was the response I got when I went to the Swindon end - it was unbelievable. People said players never got a reception like I did.”
