RIGHT MIDFIELDER
THE fight for the right-midfield berth in Town’s all-time greatest eleven turned out to be a contest between father and son. And it was Mike Summerbee that came out on top ahead of son Nicky in the vote by Swindon Advertiser readers.

Mike took just over half of the overall vote while Nicky emerged with 14 per cent, finishing second ahead of David Moss and Bertie Denyer. As a teenager, Mike Summerbee signed for Town in the late 50s and quickly became a fans’ favourite, with supporters admiring his pace, skill and pinpoint crossing ability. The wide man made his debut in the home game against Bournemouth and Boscombe Athletic in December 1959 and went on make 14 further appearances that season.

He was part of the team that won promotion to Division Two in 1962/63, scoring six goals and being one half of the revered winger double act that included the great Don Rogers. Summerbee was at Town for two further successful campaigns but was sold to Manchester City just two games into the 1965/66 season, and went on to represent his country eight times. Nicky Summerbee signed a professional contract in Wiltshire in July 1989 and made one appearance in the first team in 1989/90.

After having limited opportunities for two years, he was an integral part of the 1992/93 promotion-winning side and the team that experienced an ill-fated Premier League campaign the following season. Votes also cast for: Jimmy Davis, Ian Miller, Mark Walters, Don Heath.

HOW YOU VOTED

Andy Williams, Kent: The boy was destined for greatness and not many Town players have gone on to win England caps, league and European winners medals. What a wing partnership he made with Don Rogers - no wonder we scored so many goals during that period.

Mick Head, Newbury: With his pace and control he could beat most defenders and cause problems. No one quite like him since. Michael Willis, Wantage: A great player with fantastic vision a legend at STFC moved on to win 8 international caps for England once again a priveledge to have seen him wear a Swindon shirt in all a wonderfull player thanks for the memories.

Dennis Carey, Old Town: It was really good to watch him on one wing and Don Rogers on the other wing taking defences apart. Ken Cross, Almeria, Spain: A product of the Swindon youth system who not only acheived great things as a footballer but was also a ‘movie star’.

Colin Taylor, Berkshire: If you ever saw him play as a right winger, surely there's no one else in his class.

Alan Clark, Wantage: For his brilliance of control, anticipation, cheekiness, teasing the opposition, and his ability to read the game.
