THE VIC MORGAN COLUMN: Town's greatest day lives on
5:30am Thursday 13th March 2014 in STFC News
THIS Saturday sees the 45th anniversary of what is arguably the greatest day in our club's history.
You know the story, it remains one of the greatest upsets of all time. Sir Don Rogers (well he ought to be) gliding through the Wembley mud to secure the League Cup. That moment will never be beaten. It was magical. It gave every Town fan a lifetime of pride.
As a young teenager I was fortunate to be there. At that time we resided in the top two of the third division. Just a few places above where we sit now. So in nearly half a century what have we achieved?
Well, a couple of European trophies, two more semi finals in the aforementioned competition and an ill-fated season in the Premier League. Not to mention a couple more Wembley successes. One leading to that campaign in the top flight, the other bitter demotion for off the field irregularities. An eventful if sometimes distressing 45 years.
That anniversary falls on the day we play one of our greatest rivals, you know, the team that plays at Ashton Gate. What I hope we see is a Town team full of pride and passion.
Tuesday night against Wolves was the last 45 years personified. The second half showed fight and a bit of pride. First half, like some of the darker moments in that great chunk of our history.
We need to win at the weekend. We don't want to walk away from that derby having watched our team continue its downward spiral.
Whatever happens I've renewed my season ticket because I can't imagine life without it, okay maybe that's being crazy but I can't . I also believe in the spirit of March 15 1969.
Let Bristol City beware the Ides of March. It would be lovely to hear the same chant of "Swindon" heard at Wembley echo around again, celebrating another famous win.
