UPDATED: Town confirm Stephens signing

Town close in on Stephens

Town close in on Stephens

SWINDON Town have signed young Southampton defender Jack Stephens on loan until the end of the season.

After the Town defence was exposed in the first half of Tuesday’s loss to Wolves, during which the league leaders scored three times, the back line has become an obvious landing spot for any potential reinforcements.

Now 20-year-old Stephens could be a temporary answer and could be involved at Bristol City on Saturday.

Speaking earlier today manager Mark Cooper admitted he would consider freshening up his defence with new faces, but any potential incomings would need to benefit the club in the long term rather than just between now and the end of the season.

When asked whether the opposition would now target the Town defence, Cooper said: “I’m sure they have and will continue to do so but at the moment we are what we are.

“We are trying to do something about it and we would like to do something straightaway. Whether that means playing another centre back to cover that up like we did the other night, because we always have that option, or maybe we explore the loan market.

“We spoke to one or two but everybody is after the better players. There is no point in bringing someone in for the sake of it who is going to cost us more money, we have to make sure if we do bring someone in they’re better than what we’ve got.

“We have to be careful with any money we’ve got and we have to use it wisely.”

Stephens began his career at Plymouth before moving to St Mary’s in 2011.

I agree, just play Troy and Branco together - what have we got to lose? Why throw a Loanee into the occasion unless we have an option to buy at the end of the season? If we're so stretched why not use Matt Jones instead? I'd rather see him in town colours.

You obviously did not listen to Powers interview last week, we have paid the latest installment to Exeter.
Hopefully the new lad will partner Troy, Wardy sure needs a rest.
I have to say though he was much improved second half although the damage was done.

It has been 'exposed' for half the season - if not longer.

We have some very talented defenders, that have needed a little more experience; and we've got some very experienced defenders, that have long-needed a bit more talent.
I agree with the other posters though, strange picking an inexperienced youngen. Though to be fair, who's gonna loan out an experienced proven defender to a league 1 club?

Got to be worth taking a chance on this lad.

Still need to take some of the pressure off the defence by signing at least one midfielder who doesn't get brushed aside with ease.

What about Clerks Goal was Ward not there to defend oh Sorry he was there to watch the ball sail past him, Ward knew he let the Team down badly on Tuesday not for the 1st time this season, I will admit though I thought he had begun to play better of late but sorry I was wrong.
Please listen to Power & Cooper they want to keep the best players however it will come down to Wages & will Troy want to take a pay cut? He ought to been paid good money for two years & hardly played due to Injury.

Unfortunately all the tinkering with the defence always seems to lead to the main culprit Ward being left in the team. It doesn't matter how you shuffle the pack there comes a point when you have to discard and in Ward's case it is long overdue. Some of the weakness in our defence is also down to naïve tactics.

Hope this youngster comes in and does a job for us, if you're good enough you're old enough. Lots of people were reminiscing about Don Rogers recently with the League Cup anniversary this Saturday. Let's not forget that Rogers was only16 when he broke into the first team and was still only 23 when we went to Wembley (I think Rod Thomas was even younger). Why all the fuss and comments about our present squad being young when most are in their early 20's? That kind of age is likely to be the start of their peak years before age and injuries take their toll. Look at all the great players - Best, Pele, Eusebio et al and they were all playing regular first team football by their late teens - Pele played in his first World Cup at 17. Lesser players like Michael Owen, Rooney, Trevor Francis etc were all established members of the first team by their late teens.Too much is made of our "young squad." For most of them the way they play now is probably the best they ever will.

Bigger rivets needed eh Jock. I quite agree. I said at the start of the season that it was a season too far for Ward. I do respect his former career but he should have hung his boots up last May. For next season we need somebody at the back around 26/27 who is NOT injury prone and has a record of being solid and above all organized and a good shouter. This lad looks good and wants some action, well, he'll get plenty of that here. I hope he does well and wish him luck. Lets face it, he'll see plenty of action here, LOL.

Quite agree Den, and on a rain swept mud pile that was our pitch, and that heavy oval looking thing that weighed a ton made of sponge leather took some controlling, and they managed it, no subs, only "the reserve". If you were good enough you played 90 minutes, none of this, "Oh he is tired we'll bring him off", just get on with it!!! The thing was then, they had terrific respect for playing under those conditions, and dare I say it, with all the allowed tackling that went on, and a bit of bump, kick and shove, the game was better for it. Boys became men much quicker, they learned, often the hard way.

“Like Lloyd , an opportunity has arisen for Jack to extend his development in the short term at a club where he will be encouraged to play good football until the end of the season,” said Reed.
.
“Jack has trained regularly with our First Team and played in several cup games and friendlies, and this experience will do him good as a prelude to pre-season when he will be challenged again with us.”

"Speaking earlier today manager Mark Cooper admitted he would consider freshening up his defence with new faces, but any potential incomings would need to benefit the club in the long term rather than just between now and the end of the season."

A typo perhaps? Should maybe read

Well, you're hardly enthusiastic about a new young acquisition are you? It seems implicit to me in your negative response.
Thnk you've lost the plot if you read his first post he said cooper keeps harping on about his young side that's why they are tired and in experienced and we are struggling, SO as he said why bring another youngster? Why not get an older head.
He wasnt moaning about the player and in sure WE will all welcome him.
Ggggrrrrrraaaaa
Spot on smirg Swindonian63 HAS LOST THE PLOT BIG TIME...
Defiantly a blind fan as are defence has been shat ALL SEASON

Good post and you are spot on Sid 👍. Its time Cooper stopped the stupid excuses.

Does anyone expect Ward to start on Saturday? Agree with you put him straight in and if troy isn't fit play Branco. One would think Oakley will get a contract extension and be ready to show he's over his injury and be challenging Troy, Branco and maybe Stephens if he turns in some good performances. If Troy does play saturday i would like to see him as the captain, he's pretty vocal and leadership at the back has been missin g all season.

You are 100% correct-a total has been and has been constantly found out and yet still keeps his place. In fact-none of the current crop are fit for purpose As it is the 45th aniv of the Wembley victory I think everyone should Watch the team of 69 on you tube or buy the tape of the game and then make a considered judgement as to just what commitment means.Cooper et all not fit to clean their boots, never mind wearing the shirt
