Swindon boss Cooper to give youngsters Miles and Connor chance to shine

ALEX Pritchard’s three-game ban will give Swindon Town’s younger element the chance to shine, with manager Mark Cooper pledging to give the likes of Miles Storey and Connor Waldon gametime between now and the end of the season.

Pritchard begins his suspension, incurred following his dismissal at Bristol City, this weekend and the midfielder will miss games against Preston North End, Tranmere Rovers and Sheffield United before the end of the month.

Storey has returned from a beneficial loan spell at Shrewsbury Town and Waldon is back after spending a period at Gloucester City and Cooper revealed to the Advertiser that both are set to feature in his matchday plans for the visit of Preston to the County Ground tomorrow.

“It gives us a chance to look at somebody who is under contract for next year. We look at it the positive way – are they ready to play a part next year,” the Town boss said of Pritchard’s absence.

“There’s obviously Miles that’s back, Connor Waldon is back and they are players we have to look at and ask ‘can they help us next year’.

“The thing is with Miles is that he has had opportunities. He scored against Coventry and he’s gone to Shrewsbury and played a lot of minutes, so we’re hoping he can come back and maybe score a couple of goals for us before the end of the season.

“He will be involved (this weekend). Connor will be involved as well. You go back to who we’re playing against – Bristol City and Preston North End – and we are where we are. I’m just saying, let’s be realistic.

“The young boys, if they are going to be good enough, have to show it now.”

Nathan Byrne, meanwhile, is rated “touch and go” by the club as he recovers from the grade one hamstring tear that ruled him out of the goalless draw at Ashton Gate.

Cooper should play his best team until we are certain of safety. There is a always this clamour to play youngsters but how often do they prove any better than the players already in the team? We had it a few years ago when the managers were slated for not playing Bodin and Benyon. Neither of them was up to it in the end. Give the kids a chance by all means but let's not expect too much.

Agree with you there Den we shouldn't be complacent in our current run of form, but I don't see miles as a youngster, he is a good player who has as much experience as some of our "older" players.

Preston will have a good go at getting three points tomorrow and it will be a hard game for these lads to be thrown into. We know Miles has the speed but I`m not sure about the guts and anticipation that has to go with it. I don't think Coops is sure either ! I have no knowledge of Connor`s ability but I wish them both well in their cameos tomorrow.

Agree with Lovesey that Miles is not really a kid as he has been knocking about for a year or 2 and seeing if he is going to make the grade or not is not really a risk - certainly not more than looking at Barker
.
I would just like Cooper to settle on a formation and stick to it from now to May - and then only play players in their right position
.
With Injuries and Bans - I think it has to be a 442 diamond - with the following probably our strongest available
.
Foderingham
N.Thompson TAH Stephens McEveley
L.Thompson
Kasim Harley
Luongo
Storey M.Smith

Of our last 5 home games, 4 of the teams will be chasing play off spots so as much as I would like to see youngsters given a chance, I am not sure these are the games, perhaps Notts County and Carlisle away!

I'm not a massive fan of the diamond as we don't get any natural width plus Kasim and Harley are too similar - one paced and don't get forward. Itr's OK for a defensive rear guard like 10 men at City but a bit uninspiring at home.

Other than Storey it doesn't involve any other fringe youngsters. If he sticks to his word he might have a look at Alex Smith, Gladwin, Barker and Waldon. In which he case he may go flat 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 to fit them in better and maybe Kasim, Harley and McEveley might miss out.

Tricky one though as we know Preston will be physical and direct so tough to throw too many youngsters in although he might be tempted to bite the bullet and see what they're made of....

With Byrne and Pritchard out we are lacking wingers - which is why I thought he would opt for the diamond
.
Tijane is only our real natural winger now - so unless we start playing players out of position again - we don't have another for a flat 44
.
Also in a diamond as we have seen with Pritchard (and Stirling for Liverpool at Man U) - those type of players can move into the hole and exploit the space - so maybe he could come on for Luongo in the hole?
.
Or even start there with Luongo dropping deeper into the box-box role alongside Kasim or Harley
.
We should be able to get width through the fullbacks - especially as Louis can sit in front of the back 4 and potentially make it 3 at the back of the fullbacks have bombed on - we had plenty of width before via Caddis etc when he really pushed on - so lets get back to that
.
As Penhill says - with Preston, Sheff U, Brentford and Rotherham to come you don't want to experiment too much as we will get hammered if we put too many new bods out together
.
Granted A.Smith at LB might be worth another look this weekend - especially if they think Jay will be off in the summer - he too is not really a kid and was excellent at QPR out there - so less risky
.
Gladwin and Barker should be considered from the bench IMO
.
Then as Penhill suggested maybe give them a start against Notts Co, Tranmere, Carlisle or Bradford
.
Also personally most of that team would be my basis for next season so would be good to get them playing together as much as possible to really bond as a team in a certain formation
.
For me it should be:
.
Foderingham
N.Thomspon Troy **** Byrne
Tijane L.Thomspon Luongo ****
Ranger ****
.
So a new CB, LM and CF needed in the summer
.
Or if we stick to the diamond as NT and NB are attacking we can bring Kasim in and look to get a new "boss" in the middle of the park - I would be happy with Diagouraga - as it appears he is down the pecking order at Brentford now
.
Stephens and Pritchard would be great - as we could slot them in and go 433 with the others mentioned above - but very much doubt we will see Pritchard back as he is destined for bigger and better things

The sooner we reach the safety target of points , the better, then we can start giving a few of the youngsters a chance. On a different note, I see Bristol rovers are getting a new stadium - I must admit to feeling envious when seeing things like this.

When you post on a public forum you are judged by how you present your point as much as by the point itself, by default as Swindon fans we are judged together so please don't drag us all down with you.
If you want people to take you seriously then knowing small things like the difference between OUR and ARE will help.
You can keep addressing me as Sir - that demonstrates the appropriate level of respect.

Or instead we could sack cooper and take 5 weeks of searching for a
Manager and end up making cooper's right hand man manager.

And so you illustrate my point -just another small issue - it isn't your spelling it is the grammar.
