ON-LOAN defender Jack Stephens hopes Saturday’s success over Brentford will help ease some of the misery of last weekend’s trip to Carlisle United.

Nearly 300 Swindon Town fans made the 550-mile round trip north to see their side slump to a 1-0 defeat against the Cumbrians.

But Louis Thompson’s 44th-minute goal on Saturday sunk the promotion chasing Bees.

“The disappointing thing was the result at Carlisle,” the young centre-back said after the match.

“We felt that was a game that we had to win and obviously that didn’t happen.

“We played OK, but we just didn’t have the cutting edge and didn’t create a lot of chances.

“To come back and win today and pay the fans back, it is a long old way to Carlisle and they were great last week they didn’t stop singing, so hopefully this gives them something back.”

The Southampton youngster believes that work on the training ground at the end of last week helped Town claim a thrilling victory over a side that arrived at the County Ground needing only six points for promotion to the Championship.

“Yesterday we worked that (the diagonal balls), we worked on the full-backs and the centre-back so they would be looking for the diagonal passes,” Stephens said. “But apart from the first 10 minutes I don’t think that they caught us out with any diagonal passes – we defended really well.

“It was a great win against good opposition who need to win to get promoted, so we knew that they were going to be up for it.

“We played really well, after the first 10-15 minutes, we were a bit all over the place, but once we got to grips with their formation and our formation I thought that we played really well.”

The defender said it was also difficult to play against the 10 men of Brentford after Adam Forshaw was dismissed for two bookable offences just after the hour mark.

“You are expected to dominate the game, but I thought that we could have been a bit better with the extra man,” he said.

“We could have passed it around and made them work a bit more, we gave it away a bit too easily.

“It wasn’t the perfect performance, but I thought it was very good.”
