Barker can shine for us insists coach Williams

Swindon Advertiser: George Barker George Barker

WITH a full pre-season under his belt, George Barker will have “something to offer” Swindon Town in 2014/15, according to assistant coach Luke Williams.

Barker has struggled to break into the Town side since arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion in January, with the 22-year-old making just two starts and five substitute appearances in three months.

However, Williams knows the forward well thanks to his spell working with Barker in the Brighton development system and he is confident that Robins fans will soon see exactly what he can offer when the new campaign kicks off in August.

When asked by the Advertiser if Barker needed a full pre-season behind him to give him the platform he needs to impress the County Ground crowd, Williams said: “I hope so, I’d like that because I think he has something to offer the football club and he can be an exciting player for the fans to come and watch.”

Williams has the best insight into Barker’s attributes and when asked to explain why the tricky frontman has found it hard to make an impression in 2014 so far, he said: “George hasn’t played a great deal of football for the first half of the season so he’s in a little bit cold and needs that little bit of time. I’ve got absolutely no doubts about George’s ability.

“I’ve seen him for a number of years develop into a very good player, a very skillful player, a player that can play in different positions, can deal with the football, can play under pressure with players around him.

“From my experience he is a goalscorer. He’s scored lots of different goals, a different variety of goals – he scores in and out of the box, he scores with his head, scores volleys, he’s got the whole lot.

“I hope that George can show the fans what he’s all about and get the chance to have a few games.”

He was awful on his debut, but looked to have improved the second time we saw him start. It would help his development if he is played in his best position and if as Williams says he can score goals, then don't understand why he is not even getting a place on the bench to at least give some competition to our goal shy strikers.
