Evans offers a ringing endorsement of Town

ROTHERHAM United manager Steve Evans was full of praise for Swindon Town and their fans ahead of the two sides’ meeting in League One tomorrow.

Evans, who is not much liked amongst some Town supporters following a war of words with Paolo Di Canio when the Scot was in charge of Crawley Town, gave special mention to Robins boss Mark Cooper and chairman Lee Power during his pre-match press conference yesterday.

He said: “They are a good side, they are the one team who could have affected the play-offs. They are the only one who could have caught Peterborough and at one stage it looked like they were clawing it back. They have got a good manager, I know the chairman even better, he played for me and he has put millions of pounds into the club.

“They have a terrific fanbase and it’s their last fame of the season and they will want to send their fans away with a win. Therefore it will be tough for us. But we are there to win a football match and they are representing Rotherham and we have to make sure we represent the fans well.”

With Rotherham preparing for a play-off campaign, Evans admitted that he may have to tinker his line-up at the County Ground, but not so far as to risk sacrificing the chance of taking all three points.

He said: “I have to consider looking after certain players, but I want to win every game and when it kicks off at Swindon will I want to win, of course I will. We will fight for everything but ultimately it will have no bearing whatsoever on a week on Saturday other than it might affect who we will play in the play-offs.

“We have seven or eight players who, subject to injury or illness, will be in the team on Saturday week but there are three or four places that are up for grabs. It is not just about the match at Swindon, it is also about training.

“I think we have got players on the peripheral who could step up and really make a mark but they haven’t got much time left to do it.

“I think it’s important to where we finish. Would I like to go and get three points and finish third or fourth? Of course, that’s the only thing that is important about Saturday.

“Performances matter of course, but for me it is about getting Saturday out of the way.”

I don't think Rotherham will be fielding their strongest 11 against us, One thing they will not want is injuries and unwanted cards, it's pretty well certain they will play Orient in the play-offs leaving Preston to clean up in the other tie against the Posh. My guess would be Preston to beat Rotherham in the final, but as we all know, it's a funny old game and it's not over 'til the fat lady sings.

Contrary to belief on here, I think Steve Evans is a good motivator for his team and gets the best out of them. It would be nice if the controversies from the Crawley incidents can now be forgotten and the personal abuse he is given by some section of the fans is ended. it's a game of football for FFS and as with most we watch games to be entertained not to listen to the school play ground name calling which I doubt has little or no effect on him anyway. I'm taking my 4 year old grandson tomorrow for his first game and I don't want him asking what are they saying grampy.

I agree OTR, I think the abuse that Steve Evans has taken on this Forum has been competely out of order.
I was one of a very low crowd that extremely cold night at the County Ground when Crawley deservedly knocked us out of the F.A. Cup and witnessed the wild antics of Steve Evans and his assistant, but that was all a long time ago and it's time to forget that.
Steve Evans has proved beyond any doubt whatsoever that he is an excellent Football Manager, and his career will probably advance even more in the future.
