SWINDON Town showed an interest in bringing experienced defender Nicky Shorey to the County Ground before he signed a new deal with Portsmouth yesterday, the Advertiser understands.

Following the release of Jay McEveley at the end of last season Town are likely to recruit a new left back this summer, with a move for former Reading and Aston Villa man Shorey discussed, but any potential deal did not significantly progress before the ex-England international agreed to stay at Fratton Park for another year.

Elsewhere, former Town loanee Alex Pritchard has been linked with Wigan.

A couple of weeks ago Power said the issue with Jed was no more than a "headache". It's business as usual at the CG. Remember the summer transfer window doesn't open until 1st June. Jed & Co are not coming back, just a case of settling the final payment.

Window is 1 July - not 1 June - so even further away!
.
The Oakley article says "everyone seems to have shut up shop" - so would expect a quiet few weeks with activity picking up in late June ahead of the return to Pre-Season in July
.
As for Shorey - glad this didn't come off as he is far too old now - and as we saw with Ward we can not run the risk of having the leg go
.
There are plenty of alternative LB's out there - Joe Jacobson is one who would be good and is only 27
.
Or if they want a CB/LB - as hinted at by Cooper - there are a fair few interesting ones on the PFA list - who fit our model - Lowry (24) from Millwall, Fry (23) from Charlton, Fenwick (19) from Wednesday or Uade (18) from Arsenal

Shorey was a good defender a few years ago, but getting released by a club as bad as Bristol City should tell us all we need to know about him now.

Why show interest in an over the hill and over paid player just wanting to get another pension payment? question where's our club heading? and which skint Cowboy is in charge?

Agreed, decent player but getting on in years, happy to stay at Pompey as it's a reasonably big club with a good following for that level but still comfortable for him at league 2. Need to look to the future rather than players past their prime, could be on relatively high wages also.

Presumably the message we can take from this article is that we are trying to sign some experience as I think we now have no players over 25 (not sure on Willo's age, or if he is in the plans) with Jay gone and presuming that Ward after not featuring in the run-in is not in the plans for next season.

Personally I would think Shorey despite being an excellent player in his day is a bit past it now, although Ian Harte and Wayne Bridge played until a good age.

Hmm, the minus mugs out again on what was a very fair comment Wilesy.
