SWINDON TOWN: Town reject Rotherham bid for Luongo

Swindon Advertiser: Massimo Luongo has been the subject of a £600,000 bid from Rotherham United Massimo Luongo has been the subject of a £600,000 bid from Rotherham United

SWINDON Town have rejected a £600,000 bid from Rotherham United for Massimo Luongo, according to chairman Lee Power.

Luongo, who has recently returned from the World Cup with Australia, was purchased from Tottenham last summer for a reported £400,000 - and a large sell-on fee would be due to Spurs in the eventuality of any sale.

Power told BBC Wiltshire that Championship Rotherham's offer fell "long way short" of Town's valuation of the player.

Would be a culture shock for Luongo playing under Evans. Agree with LP way short of what he's worth probably need to double it to 1.2 million if they want him.

Good offer should have taken it nowhere near worth £1.2m.
If he's that good how come he didnt get a game for Oz in Brazil. His form last season ranged from sublime to awful and in some games his contribution was zilch.

@The Jockster

Because his team's final game was Spain, and Australia wanted to salvage something. He was behind players playing in the top divisions in their country. He was in the squad for experience.

We bought him for 400k plus add-ons. If we took 600k, we'd probably only end up with 150k profit, not really enough to replace him. Keep him, wait for higher offers.

Jockster, I would agree we saw the good and the bad from him, but in his defence I would suggest he was over played for far too long and should have been rested, 55 games is an awful lot for a young man just embarking out to be playing.

With regards to his valuation, you have to take into consideration his age, he should have 10 years left playing at a reasonably high level and you don't get a lot for £600,000 nowadays, unless of course you're B'muff and pick up players worth a million for £400,000.

Not so sure about that God, i thought Rotherham were quite superb when they were down here and i seems Evans has changed "his style" of play.
Very encouraging that we are turning this sort of money down though.
Personally i thought Mass lost a lot from the half way stage of the season last season but am confident he will have benefited from his first full season in football though.

Evans will be interested as Mass starred against Rotherham both home and away
.
I also agree he needed a rest at some stage last year as 55 is a lot of games for your first full season - but it shows how important he is that he had to keep playing while others came in and out!
.
Also I think he suffered from changing role too often - he was played deeper and then attacking and back again etc
.
If we put him in one role and allow him to develop in that we should see the best of him - I personally think that is the attacking role as we saw against Rotherham in the last game
.
It seems he is playing there in pre-season as he has scored in both games and FLIC reporters have been saying he is looking a class above at present
.
£600k is a decent offer - but Power is spot on in it is too low - I said £750k but long way short seems to suggest £1m to me
.
We would need a bid about that high as there is no way we could replace him really for much less
.
Also he is in the same category as Pritchard for me - so if he is £1m why isn't Mass - just because he is an STFC player and not a Spurs player?

OTR you do make a valid point re number of games played, I saw some stunning performances from the lad and also some anonymous ones but I concede he is our best midfielder by some distance and ideally in a perfect world I'd like to keep him. I suppose it depends on any offer being upped, the aforementioned punitive sell on clause maybe, and what LP's "sell price"might be.
Cooper's comment regarding transfers (a couple in a couple out) will invite speculation as to who might be going - I'd suggest that if Ward and Harley were to go no one would be bothered but if the two might be Wes and NT or even Louis then that's another story. Wait and see I suppose.

I'm the same as you I express my view on a public forum and I certainly don't expect anybody to necessarily agree with my viewpoint.

Where in the remit for posting on here does it say "thou shalt not post any comment that might be deemed to be a criticism of club or players?"

If you don't like don't read - simples!

Do I attend games? Of course most home games and some away (probably about half last season) - does that satisfy your posting criteria? I'll answer my own question - I really don't give a stuff whether it does or not I'll carry on regardless. There are many armchair posters on here but they are entitled to post their views the same as anyone - could you be one of those I wonder?

Another goal tonight and tomorrow should help that transfer figure get over the 1.0m mark. A player is only worth what someone is willing to pay for him; if his current team doesn't want to sell then it is down to the buyer to up his offer or walk away. LP & MC not hanging a price-tag around his neck means any interested team will know that their first offer is likely to be refused outright and perhaps a second or third also. All this speculation will do our players a world of good - raise their confidence, give them some limelight and perhaps even remind us fans of what we would/will be missing if and eventually when they move on to better things. I hope we push the figure a few notches higher and then still refuse to sell (for now). It lays a line down in the sand; raises the price-tag of all of our players and sends out a message that if another team wants what we've got then they're going to have to think twice whether or not they can afford it. This is refreshing and encouraging stuff from LP and a far cry from the humiliation and ridicule of sending out a letter to all clubs notifying them of an everything must go fire sale and then the discount sale of the leagues best player for a fraction of his worth. (Yes, that was only a little over a year ago - how things have changed!)

With respect Grim the word ' logic ' to his victims and himself in my opinion doesn't apply, he is a very good player and plays his game to the rules, but off the field seems to have trouble staying within the everyday society rules that apply. I wish him well, but who ever gets him will have a great player - but they will be constantly waiting for the next skirmish to happen.

Thinking about this though surely our policy is to sell on players at a profit to ensure the sustainability.

Young players getting the chance to show what they can do and get a move upwards is also part of the vision.

The message today is "a long way short" that is different from "not for sale"

As for this doing Luongo the world of good he has been to the World Cup and has been offered the chance to play in the Championship which would be a good career move. Will he be chuffed to bits with another season in League 1 on Swindon wages? I'm not so sure.

Dont be surprised to see a second or third bid come in, and Luongo leave for maybe £800k, it may suit the player and our finances.

Wilesy, I suspect you are right that we will sell one or two of the Crown Jewels - but I have been impressed by the 'hands-off our players attitude from LP - at the very least it pumps up their transfer value for when we do decide to sell and means they are more likely to go to a club that can afford to look after them properly.

A move to Rotherham would destroy his development as a footballer. He'd be instructed to kick opponents, dive, feign injury & generally cheat whenever possible.
.
He wouldn't see an awful lot of the ball if he went to Rotherham either. The 'blob' likes any team he manages to by-pass midfield with his hoof ball style, from the back straight up to Revell!
