Town boss says Randall and Marshall could be stars, if fans don’t jump on their backs

SWINDON Town fans have been urged not to jump on the backs of the club’s scholars as and when they get their first-team breaks in 2014/15, with manager Mark Cooper insisting that with the support they need this crop of players could go on to be future stars.

Cooper has been hugely impressed by the likes of Will Randall and Lee Marshall in pre-season and, having called the duo into his senior squad for the friendly fixtures at Petersfield and Eastleigh, intends to draft the two attacking midfielders into first-team training on a regular basis during the coming campaign.

However, in order for the club to maximise the potential of the starlets, the Swindon boss is asking supporters to give the second-year scholars the chance they need to settle into professional football - even though they’ve yet to obtain professional status just yet.

He said: “I think everyone knows I have to take a big interest in the young players because that’s what we’re trying to do - we’re trying to bring young players through into the first team and hopefully send them on to big futures.

“I watch a lot of the youth teams, all the way up, and I’ve been aware of Will since I came to the football club. Him, Lee Marshall - there’s a few others that know they’re going to get an opportunity. I think they know there’s a realistic pathway from the academy into the first team.

“That might not have been the case before. People have to be patient with them because it’s easy to get on the back of a young player. If they’re patient with them they could have some future stars on their hands.”

Cooper’s own son, Charlie, is in the youth system at Birmingham City, and the Robins manager draws on the experiences of coaxing a child to the top when dealing with his young charges at the County Ground.

“I find it easy because I’ve got a son who’s in an academy system, so I just try to deal with or speak to them as I would my own boy. I find that bit quite easy and you have to be patient with them and give them a lot of time,” he said.

“I think it’s important they come into our group and train and play at the tempo we play at on a regular basis.

“You need to pull them in, put them out, make sure they get enough rest. It may be the case that they train with us and play for the youth team on a Saturday, or they may be on the bench for us.

“You look at it at the moment and there’s every chance they may feature for us.”

Sounds good to me, but will some give them the chance, 50/50 at best I'd say. I wish the lads every success and hope that most will find patience somewhere within themselves, and allow time for these lads to make the step up.

You will be the first to complain and especially if Cooper mentions our squad is young and inexperienced if he plays Randell or Marshall!

Yes, agreed, Happy days! They seemed to moved seamlessly from the reserves into the 1st team when there was an injury, often in front of crowds double or more what we get now. ... and the Football Pink used to be in our letter-boxes by the time we got home!
Whilst the pressure of our expectations seems to be different nowadays, these youngsters still need to be given every support... we have to get used to the fact that we cannot live beyond our means any longer & youngsters coming through (& moving on) is the only way we can survive.
If we get a mid-season finish & no relegations in the next 2 years then I think we have made good progress.

I really hope Cooper never makes the young team excuse.

We pay good money to watch competitive football, and Cooper and Power have the responsibilty to put out a competitive team. If they choose to use solely young and inexperienced players they cannot then blame their age because that makes them look silly.

If results are poor and our youngsters get bullied off the pitch game after game then there are bound to be complaints.

If our superloans all come good and we run rings round teams then there won't be complaints.

I don't think complaints will be made just because a player is young, it's down to attitude and effort.

Put 100% in like young Louis Thompson and no problems. Put 50% in like young George Barker did in his start up front and there will be complaints.

Having a stand-out game like Ben Gladwin did last season also helps.

I've said it before and without re-opening that debate I think we desperately need a bit of experience in the team, to benefit the young lads on and off the field. Even the management team is young.

Also the loans are likely to be a bit hit and miss there is no guarantee they will save the day, although that could be said for any signing. Pritchard was a thumbs up, Mason thumbs down due to injuries and Hall thumbs down due to performance.

With the likes of Fodders, N.Thompson, Byrne, Luono, L.Thompson, Kasim and Smith all having a season more under their belts and a season together he has said they should improve and therefore so should our performances and results
.
I'm fairly optimistic and believe Top 10 with an outsdie chance of the POs is what we will see again - that might go up dpeending on who the loanees who come in are and how they settle in

Dear Mr Cooper (or actually the man with his hand up your backside)

if you introduce two or three promising youngsters for footballing reasons I ma sure most fans (particularly those who remember the sixties) will be fully supportive, and even mildly excited....

if you introduce four, five or six teenagers because (despite being one of the best supported teams in the league) you are not prepared to pay the going rate for league 1 footballers then most Swindon supporters (including eventually some of the regular clappers on here) will see through you and vote with their feet....

This is a football club with a long history - it is not a free showroom for lining an agents pockets....

Fingers crossed Storey does well at Pompey and these guys do well here and in the future we keep and play our youth where appropriate

How have they not had management support?
.
Is Nathan Thompson not Club Captain at only 23?
.
Did Louis Thompson not play 35+ in his break through season?
.
Has Waldon not played for the first team and regularly this pre-season?
.
Did Jones and Randell not get first team appearances prior to even becoming Pros?
.
Is Marshall not heavily involved this pre-season despite being a scholar still?
.
As for Storey - he has had plenty of chances playing 36 games over 3 seasons under 3 different managers - yet every time he has not forced his way in - ever thought that might be down to him rather than everyone else?
.
I have nothing against Storey and would love for him to make it - but sometime players are juust not good enough like Callum Kennedy, Billy Bodin, Leigh Bedwell, Alex Ferguson, Mark Fancis and Aaron Oakley who have all been and gone in recent years

LR - I give Cooper stick on here because he is clueless not because the players are young, people seem to forget how bad that football was when we went on our unable to win a game streak.

We played 1 up front everything was played in front of the opposition and we would get to the edge of their box and somehow the ball would be passed back ward right back to the keeper, football isn't just about holding on to the ball in the wrong areas its about holding onto it with purpose.

When he eventually changed it (far too late IMO) we looked a much better side with Smith and Storey running in behind and playing faster football with a purpose.

Cooper uses the young card too much, mistakes I accept we are young, but they do what they are told, he never admits to making any, at shrewsbury last year it was one of the worst games I have ever witnessed by a Town side, there were a few more like that, so much so that I stopped going away from Mid Dec onward.

I have renewed my ST's and am going to most of the friendlies but I will see what this year brings as to whether i renew next year or just become one of the many go when I feel like its

I have renewed my ST's and am going to most of the friendlies but I will see what this year brings as to whether i renew next year or just become one of the many go when I feel like its
So it's all Coopers fault when it goes wrong but nothing to do with him when we recover from that period to record our best run for a quarter of a century?
.
Ever thought Cooper is still learning and will be better for the experiences of last season?
.
Power too - with the way the squad is changing shape (or will do when the loanees arrive)
