Town still waiting on Stephens deal

Jack Stephens

SWINDON Town are still waiting to hear back from Southampton regarding the availability of Jack Stephens.

The Robins had hoped to receive a reply from the Saints regarding their loan inquiry for the centre-back by the end of this week but discussions continue in the background, as the Premier League side decide whether or not to give temporary care of one of their most prized young assets to the League One club.

With central defence the area manager Mark Cooper and owner Lee Power most urgently need to strengthen ahead of the new season, which gets underway with the visit of Scunthorpe in 15 days’ time, the powers that be at the County Ground remain optimistic that they can land their man.

However, Cooper was not able to put a timeframe on when new arrivals might turn up in Wiltshire, saying: “There’s nothing at the moment. I think it will be a case of us getting a call and it will be ‘right, it’s done’.

“There’s no timeframe on it but obviously time is of the essence and the sooner we get the players in the better. We are short in areas – everybody knows that, I know that – but Lee is working hard behind the scenes to try to get them in as quickly as possible.

“I think the problem is (Southampton) really like him (Stephens). They really like him but it maybe they think the best benefit is for him to play more games rather than be on the fringes, hopefully. That’s what we’re hoping.”

So far, Swindon have added midfielder Anton Rodgers and defender Josh Lelan to their first-team squad this summer and, though he’d rather it didn’t happen, Cooper is wary that his transfer business could take until the very end of the window – which shuts on August 31 – to be completed.

“Obviously we brought Josh in from Derby and we’re just waiting on a daily basis. We could end up by the end of tomorrow having four new players, that’s how it could work,” he said.

“It’s difficult to put a timeline on it. I’ve said all along that ideally we don’t want it to be like last year, when we’re still adding players in the final week, but I’ve got a funny feeling that might happen. We just get on with it and do the best we can.

“We’re not in a position where we can go and spend £250,000 or £1million on a player and get it done straight away. We have to wait, but we’re not just going to go and sign anyone. We want to make sure we get the right one.”

Let us hope the Town can secure JS for the seaon on Loan.Southampton may just feel it would be an opportunity for the player to get regular first team football. It will also I think put the Player in the shop window(similiar to Prtichard)
Still guess it is a wait and see situation, would feel by end of to-day or early next week we will know for sure.At least STFC are making the effort.

Sensible approach by Power and Cooper, though it does leave supporters biting their fingernails. We clearly need another 4-5 players, but they must be the right ones, and that's tough when finances are tight. Everyone needs to keep the faith. The contacts and the knowledge of the game are there, and we can be sure that the needs we see as fans are equally obvious to those who do this for a living. Talent seems to be coming through from the youth set-up, so stay positive. Can't wait till I get to see the team, even though it means a 6,000 mile trip. COYR

I can't see this happening anytime soon. Lovren is on the verge of a move to Liverpool. Fonte, the other first team centre back, has refused to sign a new contract and is the subject of a £3m+ bid from Cardiff. That leaves Saints with three other centre backs, one of which is Stephens. The PL transfer scene needs to unravel a bit further first.

They are in discussions about Concrete Ron coming in - so they could be fine if that comes off!
.
Also lets not forget they played him in midfield without Lovren in the squad - so they are not short at CB
.
Think Cooper is right when he says they are seriously desiding is a year out better than a year on the bench?

Lets hope this deal can be sorted for Saints and Stephens its more beneficial for him to get weekly game time in L1 than playing reserve football or sitting on the bench for the first team squad as next year by playing for us and helping his development he can then go up a league to the championship as Pritchard and Hall have done that were with us last season. Idiots like Dyke at the FA should also look at clubs like us and how we have helped these players developed instead of introducing another league.
Anyway lets hope Power can sort this soon as Stephens is a quality player.

Well said Mark. Your approach is the right one. The situation is frustrating for some fans, having to wait for new signings, but in the current climate there is no alternative.

The board and manager produced a pretty good team last season, finishing 8th. I have faith in the skill and approach of the board and manager alike. Well done and good luck to all at the County Ground.

Don't Agree at all - Power has said since day 1 that the loans would not happen until the end of July
.
It is a crucial time in his development so Saints are obviously going to have a proper look at him to decide how far along he is
.
Its a big jump from 10 L1 games to full Premiership player - so don't think he will feature much for them YET
.
Power is not stupid and if it looked unlikely he would be looking elsewhere already

i agree with some points of both these post, I would add Koeman is finding it tough going getting the right players in for them. He has also had 2 rejections from Feyinoord where he was supposed to have some good contacts and I don't think he will prise Ron Vlaar away from Villa. As LR said Jack played defensive midfield last Monday and they definitely have bigger lads than him to fill the centre back positions even if they can't bring in anyone in.

There have been so many leaving St Mary's I think they are just stabilising the flow until they can get some players in. Not good for us but not much we can do about it. At least Cooper is trying to keep us updated of where things are with Stephens. Now what about that striker we heard about and what's happening with the enquiry with the Liverpool lad.

1. End of July is here

2. Cooper said that he'd hear about Stephens within 48 hours after the Southampton game...

3. I never said he'd be first choice premier league, I said there's spaces to fill

4. I never slated Lelan the other day, it's the length of the loan that's laughable

5. We only have 2 weeks until the start of the season...

6. Only two signings so far, and multitude of trailists who no one has ever heard of - not good.

7. If I was Koemann and looking to loan Stephens and if he's close to Premiership quality, which he is, I would be looking to loan him to a Championship side, just like Pritchard at Brentford.

This deal has been severely dented by the mass exodus at Southampton and no one can blame them for holding onto their players at the present time and I can see it NOT happening. Lee power has said though they do have plans in place if any deals do not come off so guess we just have to wait and see. I shall go to the Leeds game to see where we are and assess our chances for the season but a lot can happen right up to the end of August so things can change anyway. Yes Stephens would be great but its not critical and season dependent as there must be other irons in the fire I'm sure.

Yeah I know we have 2 weeks to go - a very long time in football - plus we have about 6 weeks of the transfer window left to add players - Man U are the same as are Man City and Arsenal! . Why are trialists not good? Just because you have heard of them doesn't make them all rubbish! . I had never heard of lots of players before they signed or were about to sign including Parkin, Cox, Austin, Foderingham, Luongo, Byrne, Kasim and Stephens - who have all been excellent for us . I'm also sure Posh fans had not heard of the likes of McLean or Leeds of Beckford! . Keoman will want what is best for Stephens and Saints - thus the time it has taken so far to decide - as already said its a big call for a 20 year old to be a back up playing U21 games or out on loan . This is the whole B league debate after all!!!! . If on loan he might rather him be at a club which a) plays him b) plays a similar style and c) where he will be happy rather than it just being Championship team . Pritchard had a whole year in L1 then made the step up - so maybe Stephens will follow suit and move up next season after a whole campaign????[/p][/quote]A very typical London red post, just being rude and sarcastic to another reputable poster. joey butler

Southampton apparently have bids in for center halves from Celtic and Villa (van Dijk and Vlaar). Assume that they are waiting on the outcome of these bids, but if they come off, Stephens may be headed our way. Fingers crossed.

Don't Agree at all - Power has said since day 1 that the loans would not happen until the end of July
.
It is a crucial time in his development so Saints are obviously going to have a proper look at him to decide how far along he is
.
Its a big jump from 10 L1 games to full Premiership player - so don't think he will feature much for them YET
.
Power is not stupid and if it looked unlikely he would be looking elsewhere already
.
As for Lelan - those slating him should probably have a look at this: http://www.bbc.co.uk
