Four-midable win for trainer John

FORMER Manton trainer John Gosden got off to a flyer at Newmarket's Craven meeting, saddling four winners on the first day.

He started his 1,785-1 four-timer with 20-1 shot Pampas Cat, who won the opening event, a three-year-old maiden stakes, beating the Barry Hills-trained Daraahen by five lengths.

Ridden by Jimmy Fortune the trainer said: "He did it well, it was a nice performance. The jockey said he will have no problems stepping up in trip, he stays well."

Now based in Newmarket, Gosden then saddled Infallible (7-2) to win the feature race of the day, the Group Three Nell Gywn Stakes, from 66-1 shot Kylane.

Almost immediately she was in demand by punters for the 1000 Guineas and had her price cut to around 3-1 favourite for the second Classic of the season on Sunday, May 4.

Despite the impressive victory the trainer said: "She got left at the stalls but they didn't go a great pace and she made up the ground.

"Jockey Jimmy Fortune knew he was sitting on plenty of horse. I like her but she's going to have to be darn good to take on the grey French filly Nalagora. She's not very experienced to go to the Guineas but we ought to go there."

The former Wiltshire trainer then went on to land the final two races on the card with the 11-10 favourite Virtual and 8-1 shot Prohibit, both ridden by Fortune.

Virtual could well have earned himself a crack at the 2000 Guineas, Gosden saying the mile would suit him but he would take his time and think about it.

After Prohibit won the last race on the card, the trainer said: "You don't get many days at meetings like this when you turn up and have four winners from four runners so you have to savour it."

However the trainer was not so lucky in the feature race of the meeting, the Craven Stakes when his 2000 Guineas hope Ravens Pass was beaten in a thrilling finish by Twice Over, trained by Henry Cecil and ridden by Ted Durcan.
