Sean Cusack, head groom at Alan King's Barbury Castle yard, is to stay on after his plans to train for businessman Carl Barnes in West Yorkshire fell through.

Cusack together with his wife Anita, who is King's travelling head groom, was due to take up his new post on July 1.

However, after having had a look around the Parkin-Hall Stud, Cusack decided not to make the move.

He said that the yard itself was lovely but added: "When I looked at the gallops and surroundings there was no way I could have trained there.

"It needed a lot of investment and I told Carl that I couldn't go there in its current state."

Barnes confirmed he was embarrassed by the situation and said he felt sorry for Sean, adding: "I'm sure one day he will achieve his dream to be a trainer."

The couple were relieved that their posts at Barbury Castle had not been filled and after a meeting with Alan King it was back to business as usual.

Cusack added: "It was a bit of a sickener as it was our dream to start training.

"We are both gutted but it was a good job we found out before it was too late and we are very lucky that Alan has taken us back."
