Abbey Meads Juniors Debut!

Abbey Meads juniors had their first game in the junior league against a very experienced Lawn team. The Abbey girls looked great in their new kit and it was lovely to have so many supportive parents and children on the sideline.

Closest Win Yet for Abbey Meads D

Abbey Meads started the game strong as we wanted to end the first quarter in the lead. The current league table stood with both teams on 21 points, so we knew we were going to be in for a fight for the win! After some great support work from Susan Maggs as WA and Christina Barrow as C, Nat Cole, GA and Jennifer Purcell, GS, were able to dominate the attack D to end the first quarter 12 - 5 to Abbey. With no changes for the second quarter, the Abbey team continued to work well on attack with some great defensive interceptions from Coli Cunningham, GD and Nicola Gilhespy, GK to increase the lead and make the half time score 21-16. We were in the great position of having a full squad, with all 11 girls available to play. Unfortunately, the D captain, Purcell, made a few too many changes at once for the third quarter, and so the flow of the team was unsettled as everyone tried to adjust, enabling Ferndale to bring the score back up to within a point. Starting the final quarter 26 - 25 to Abbey, we returned back to the starting line-up but switching in Lyndsey Sutton for Sian Wait on WD. This really turned up the pressure as both teams could smell the win. After a tense 15 minutes of alternately going in the lead and then Ferndale equalising, Abbey managed to squeeze out the extra goal for the closest win of the season yet! Player of the match was Christina Barrow.

Optimist Open Day at Bowmoor SC

Forty five youngsters took part in Bowmoor Sailing Club’s Optimist Open Day on October 29 2011. There were 25 boats in the main fleet and 20 boats in the regatta fleet. The open followed winter training with boats coming from as far away as Falmouth. There was some highly competitive racing. The first race in the main fleet saw Martin Wrigley take the lead chased by Iain Bird finishing half a boat length behind, with Rosie Williamson in third place. In the second race Martin broke clear of the pack to win by some margin. Second went to Alaric Bates, third going to Iain. After lunch the third race Martin was first, second went to Alaric with Ryan Bush in third place and in the ast race Huw Nunn took the lead for two laps. Then a tacking duel on the second lap with Martin allowed Rosie to take the lead until the final mark rounding when Martin gained an overlap on Rosie to squeeze though as the S flag was raised. The final result was, Martin first, Rosie second and Huw Nunn third. The overall positions were; 1st Martin Wrigley CBYC, 2nd Alaric Bates Bowmoor SC/CBYC, 3rd Rosie Williamson Bowmoor SC, 4th Huw Nunn Bowmoor SC/CBYC.

Slow Start for Abbey Meads A is Misleading for Pinehurst

Abbey Meads A faced Pinehurst A last Saturday in Swindon and District Netball Division One. Abbey Meads A's successful start to the season gave them confidence heading into the match, however, they started slowly and Pinehurst took an early lead 4-1. Abbey A steadily fought back and in doing so began playing at their normal pace and took a quarter time lead 11-7.

Exciting Fight for the Win for Abbey Meads A

Last season’s Division One winners Abbey Meads A faced Moredon A on Saturday. Runners up last year, Moredon, like Abbey had made an excellent start to the season. With several close encounters throughout last season and at the divisional tournament in September, Abbey anticipated a tough match.

Start to the SDNA Netball Leage going well for Abbey Meads

Abbey A faced a tough Park A side last Saturday in Swindon & District Netball Division 1. Both teams settled quickly into the game but Abbey’s defence of Susie Lidbury and Helen McGrath struggled to contain a strong Park attack.

Abbey Meads A VS Abbey Meads B After a terrific season in 2010/11, Abbey Meads A were ready and excited for the beginning of the 2011/12 season. Their first opponents, however, would be the newly promoted Abbey Meads B team.

Raychem junior joy

Raychem junior netball members did particularly well at the Swindon Junior League tournament on Sunday 22nd May. Their under 11A's won their section of the Hi 5 tournament with the under 11B's finishing runners up in their section also.
