Exciting Fight for the Win for Abbey Meads A
9:11am Tuesday 11th October 2011 in Sport
Last season’s Division One winners Abbey Meads A faced Moredon A on Saturday. Runners up last year, Moredon, like Abbey had made an excellent start to the season. With several close encounters throughout last season and at the divisional tournament in September, Abbey anticipated a tough match.
Abbey started strongly scoring from each centre and forcing mistakes from the Moredon attack, resulting in a 10-4 lead at quarter time. The Abbey defence of Helen McGrath, Susie Lidbury and Kathryn Johnson continued to make it difficult for the Moredon attack and with accurate shooting from Caroline Greenfield and Julie Hewitt, Abbey led into half-time. Moredon however pushed the Abbey defence in the third and with a few errors made by the Abbey team, Moredon pulled back to 27-27 at three quarter time.
Abbey were determined though and with an excellent effort forced errors again from the Moredon side and took the lead at the beginning of the last quarter and fought hard to take the win 38-32.
Abbey Meads D team - Lawn F For a new team at the beginning of the season, The D team are working so well together already. Lawn F were a string team who provided a fair and good game. Abbey made a couple of silly mistakes at the start of the match but made up for it with some amazing interceptions by Susan and Sian. A switch around at half time saw a close game increase to a ten goal lead by the end of the 3rd quarter. Nat Cole was on fire with her shots and the final score ended 40 - 22 to Abbey D. Player of the match was awarded to Susan Maggs.
Abbey Meads E v Nationwide C It was a very tough, physical match from the first centre, the first quarter saw Nationwide taking the lead with it ending 12-4. We kept things the same during second quarter pushed harder in defence to make Nationwide's centre passes harder, and Jo, Nicola and Gemma got great interceptions which we moved down the court and great shooting from Katie and Emma meant we gained goals and were only 3 behind at half time at 20-17. We made a couple of switches (although maybe we should have kept it the same in hindsight) as the flow of our play didn't go as well as the previous quarter, the third quarter finished 30-21 to Nationwide. A couple of switches in the last quarter helped get the flow back into the game but tiredness was kicking in so a few mistakes were made with some of our passing and movement, but we kept on fighting. Unfortunately we lost 42-30, but had a great game against strong opposition, with some of us playing the best we have this season. Player of the match went to Tammy.
