A SUCCESSFUL digital mapping company is the latest firm to be named a Switch on to Swindon ambassador.

CartoConsult, which provides innovative 3D mapping services to the architectural, engineering and construction industries, and is located in the Groundwell Industrial Estate, has backed Switch on to Swindon since it launched to much fanfare in January.

Switch on to Swindon is a scheme intended to unite businesses, organisations and individuals across the area in a powerful network to change perceptions of the town and to raise its profile.

Gavin Calthrop, head of place marketing a Swindon Borough Council, is thrilled to have CartoConsult on board, describing the company as “geospatial technology experts doing some really interesting stuff in Swindon, nationally and internationally”.

Tim Hughes, CEO of CartoConsult and a man proud to have been born and bred in Swindon, said: “I am really keen to be involved and be an ambassador. I always say good things about Swindon when I’m out and about, so it felt natural to get on board with something like this.

“It’s a great scheme that has been very well run and has had a lot of support from the business community.”

Tim’s company is based in Swindon, but a lot of their work is London-based at the moment.

This is something Tim hopes to change as he works with Swindon Borough Council on a number of important projects.

“We are currently monitoring traffic movements on the A420 in light of the building of the New Eastern Villages,” said Tim.

They have also worked in the town centre, Park North and Park South to create a planning visualisation tool to assist developers.

“We have only been going for a couple of years and we want to focus more of our work here and employ more local people,” said Tim.

“I attended the launch of Switch on to Swindon and I thought it was a really good event, very well attended. It can only mean good things for the town.”

Gavin added: “Tim Hughes is a local guy who started CartoConsult from scratch and the growth of the company over the last two years has been quite incredible.”

More than 400 people turned up to enjoy Audi’s warm hospitality in late January to witness the launch of Switch on to Swindon.

Campaign co-ordinator Nicky Alberry described the scheme as "a major milestone in the on-going success story that is Swindon".
