A murder probe is under way after a 13-year-old girl was fatally assaulted in Doncaster's Elmfield Park area
A murder investigation is under way following the death of a 13-year-old girl after a suspected stabbing.
Emergency services were called to the Elmfield Park area of Doncaster following reports that a girl had been attacked. It is understood she suffered stab wounds.
She was treated at the scene by police and paramedics, before being taken by ambulance to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.
South Yorkshire Police confirmed she had died from her injuries and a murder investigation had been launched.
A 26-year-old woman has been arrested and remains in police custody.
Police said the attack had been reported to them by the girl herself, who raised the alarm just before 1.20pm.
A member of staff at the nearby Earl of Doncaster Hotel, who declined to give his name, said the park had been cordoned off by officers, who had also come in to speak to the general manager about the incident.
The whole of Elmfield Park is sealed off, with blue police tape could be seen attached to railings and trees.
Members of the public were not allowed into the park and police community support officers stood positioned at various locations. A white forensic police tent could be seen in the park - just a few metres from a play area.
One woman, who was passing the scene with her 13-year-old daughter, said she no longer allowed her to go into the park, saying: "It is not a very good park, to be honest. There have been a number of incidents in there, it is not like when I was a child."
