I WAS sad to read about more vandalism at Radnor Street Cemetery.

I have regularly visited the graves of several relatives in Whitworth Road Cemetery since my childhood in the 1950s.

However, when I made a visit last week I could hardly believe my eyes.

The cemetery was in a disgusting state and didn't appear to have been maintained for a considerable length of time. Weeds were everywhere, grass left uncut and large trees had been allowed to grow in the middle of graves. This used to be a meticulously kept area and the beautiful flower beds were always a marvellous sight.

I would be ashamed to use the present site as a last resting place for anyone. My first thoughts were of a complete disrespect of the dead and an overriding desire to save money.

Earlier this week I attended a cremation at Kingsdown Crematorium. What a complete contrast. There were many acres of grassland perfectly cut, beautifully maintained gardens and wonderful displays of flowers. I felt angry about the inequality between the maintenance of the two sites because of the total lack of respect and compassion shown to former Swindonians who chose to be buried at Whitworth Road.

The present state of the cemetery is a form of vandalism and is not displaying an appropriate example to the young people of this town. Shame on you Swindon Borough Council.
