MEMORY is a peculiar thing. On occasions it works fine, on other occasions it can fail, as it did in Frank Avenell’s letter (Mark sickens me, SAAug 29), in which he wrote “if memory serves me, M Webb was among your correspondents who implied that I was racist”.

In which letter did he make that statement? We would both be grateful if you would inform us. Neither of us have labelled you or any other individual as such.

We have labelled political parties and organisations as racist as unfortunately such groups do exist.

We have said you are xenophobic, because your previous letters make you to be of such a nature (there is a difference between xenophobic and racist).

In one of my letters (A Xenophobe, June 2012) I defended you against accusations that you are a racist. I have in the past challenged other correspondents who have made the same accusation against myself (Martin) and they were not able to substantiate their claim.

Write and say what you will about us but please don’t make accusations against us that you can’t follow up with evidence.

Next time you feel the need to reply to a correspondent make sure you have the evidence to refer to and don’t rely on memory.
