Well, it’s a lovely September evening and again, as the experts predicted, the Marshgate fire has got worse before it gets better.

The smell on September 8 was disgusting. All the windows were closed, we’ve battened down the hatches, the air freshener is out.

At the risk of repeating myself I just hope our wonderful council and fire brigade learn by their mistakes.

You see, I don’t buy the claim that this is firstly an environmental agency issue.

Yes, they may have the final say, but this pile of waste is on your doorstep.

You should both be checking the situation on a regular basis and informing the agency likewise.

I just hope the local business and residential communities monitor the situation very closely, because it would not surprise me to see our pathetic council allowing the accumulation of another gigantic waste tip in the same place.

Somebody with authority needs to make assurances to the contrary now, so we can at least look forward to next summer.
