I would like to respond to the letter from Frank Avenell about restoring pride in our country (15/1/15).

He firstly claims that Nigel Farage is the only leading politician voicing the concerns of the UK electorate.

If that is so why is his party only averaging around 16 per cent in the opinion polls?

It is true that on Immigration Mr Farage’ view has the highest poll rate compared with the other party leaders, at 21 per cent, but 46 per cent do not think he or the other parties have the right solution.

On the issue of EU immigration 46 per cent think it is bad for the UK, but 45 per cent think we should just accept it.

On EU membership the last MORI poll gave support for EU membership at 57 per cent, with other polls indicating a smaller lead for the pro-EU campaign.

Frank’s letter also mentions the song There’ll always be an England, published in 1939, when the UK as a whole, not just England, went to war to defend the freedom of Poland and other European countries who are now our EU partners and the very people he blames for all our country’s woes!

He also lends his supports to Mr Farage’s comments about a fifth column in our country and the failure of multi-culturism.

Can I remind him of a line from the song “The Empire too we can depend on you.” Are not most of the non-Anglo-Saxon element of our multi-cultural society from what were former Empire countries?

Did we not all shout with pride when these very same people won gold for England at last year’s Commonwealth Games?

In reality his letter is another example of Frank’s continual campaign against those politicians that do not share his views, which he has every right to do.

However, it is unsustainable for him to think that his view must always be right and those who do not agree are traitors to our country.

I hope there will always be an England, an England within a strong and prosperous United Kingdom, which plays a leading role with the European Union.

We must look to the future and not keep on trying to rekindle the past, no matter how glorious that past maybe.
