Readers may recall how the administration has been trying to give the impression that the Regent Circus crossings are much safer than residents’ experiences indicate.

They portrayed a safety inspection report as if it vindicated their failure to address residents’ fears and concerns.

In fact, there were 24 important safety improvements and we still wait for the installation of many of these improvements, including who has priority.

We have already seen the disgraceful dropping of the description of these crossings as a shared space scheme.

As if this magically changes the difficulties that cyclists, drivers and pedestrians face.

What readers and others may not know is the view of equalities representatives, whose views appear to have been misrepresented by the administration as if their support was being given to the scheme.

At the town centre localities meeting held last week equality representatives poured scorn over the positive representation.

In summary it was stated that it was impossible for the poor of sight or blind to have eye contact with drivers to know who has priority.

One blind person said he would never go out on to the crossing with a white stick because he didn’t know what a driver was going to do.

He said this was said to those participating in the inspection but I have not seen this reported anywhere.

They mentioned £5,000 for guide dog training for this particular crossing, again pouring scorn, being pretty sure no valid training exists.

They suggested there are thousands who are affected and their questions to the administration appear to have had replies written by idiots.

One said she had been fed a pack of lies and they are just saying things. They said they did not understand why the council had removed a safe crossing.

I think the priority now is to get the needed safety features, signs and lighting installed as soon as possible.

The next priority is to admit the failure of the scheme and be honest about this set of crossings and install a safe alternative suitable for everyone.
