PETER Fuller is the sort of person we need many more of.

For half a century he has been organising football tours and holidays throughout Europe, doing his bit to promote sport, international friendship and sheer fun.

When he began the trips in the 1960s, foreign travel was still a rarity for most people.

It would be several years before cheaper air travel and the first package tour boom diverted people en masse from British seaside resorts.

What Peter couldn’t have realised at the time was that the trips he organised would become a longstanding local institution which continues to this day.

In the early days the main focus was on playing football, although as the years passed the emphasis shifted to more traditional holidays.

Peter’s work is a fine example of the great things a person can achieve if they have sufficient determination and a wish to do something good for their fellow human beings.

He also reminds us that doing good things can be a great deal of fun rather than a trial or a torment.

It is impossible to put a number on the people who have happy memories of Peter’s trips. Having organised them for 50 years, the 81-year-old is more than entitled to pass on his responsibilities, and we’re delighted that Kevin Smith, already a helper with the tours, has agreed to take over leadership.

Should Peter find himself mentioned in future local and national honours lists, it will be no more than he deserves.
